New school superintendent plans $1 million in cuts

Thursday, June 16, 2011

Interim Hamilton County Superintendent Rick Smith said he plans to cut $1 million in jobs from the school system's central office.

Most of the cuts will be through attrition, people retiring and leaving their posts vacant, said Smith, who hopes to be elected into the Board of Education's top post permanently.

"We are working really hard to balance the budget," he said.

The school system has been struggling with a $14.4 million deficit.
