McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy said the number of methamphetamine labs seized this year in the county fell by half compared with last years' numbers.

In 2010, authorities seized 38 meth labs from January to April, and this year only 18 have been found within the same time frame, Guy said in a news release.

McMinn led the state in 2010 with the most meth labs seizures - 161.

"We've never enjoyed being known for meth production," Guy said. "It's been a black eye for our county for the past two years."

The sheriff credited the low number to the "100 days of Pseudo-Free Tennessee" campaign he started in the end of February. The campaign asked all pharmacies to stop selling cold medicine that contains pseudoephedrine unless a customer has a doctor's prescription.
