about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

CORRECTION

On this site a few months ago I predicted that Newt would not officially declare his intentions to become President. I was wrong.

I thought media scrutiny into his 'fund raising' and life style would preclude any official announcement. You wouldn't need a microscope to find his flaws.

My favorite quote of his from this 'campaign' came from an appearance on Meet the Press. He said the bogus Paul Ryan budget plan was nothing more than right wing social engineering.

Beautifully poetic Newt.

And then the feces hit the fan. He hadn’t received the memo that ALL republicans had to support the Ryan Plan (why is that?) and so he had to quickly backpedal.

He said something like, 'If you quote what I said on Meet The Press you'll be committing a falsehood.'

OMG. What a twit. At his best he's a big fat pompous mound of ego driven amoral sludge. In the old days a guy like that would not get a chance to run for public office. He'd be tarred and feather and ridden out of town on a rail.

Heck, as the cartoon suggests, even his campaign walked out on him.

I stand corrected, but I hope he stays in the race for another year at least.

Newt may be too politically and personally liberal, and imploding, but give the man's resume his due. He was #3 in the country for several years, during which he brought in welfare reform and eventually a balanced budget, and the economy did not tank. None of the other candidates can equal that, including our President. And he's a bright man with lots of ideas. The Democrats these days are just saying "No;" their Senate hasn't even passed a budget in two years.

Nice revision of history, Andrew. Newt may be politically and personally liberal... not hardly, this is the man who gave us family values as an important determination in voting. Problem is: he is a hypocrite through and through. Newt also gave us the Contract with America and the Gingrich revolution. This produced classic hypocrites like Zach Wamp who espoused one thing and did the opposite. Remember, term limits? Balanced budget and its surplus was because of Clinton. Yeah, he was a man of ideas, but most of them did not apply to him or his cronies, once in power.

This cartoon depicts the sole supporter doing all he can to support Newt, funny that person isn't Callista. Oh, no she is cruising at sea, laughing at that poor plebe who remains loyal to her inept husband. Wonder how long this marriage will last after he quits his campaign?

My how people love to re-write history.

Both sides were being stubborn in 1995, because Congress refused to fund initiatives that Bill Clinton had campaigned on. Gingrich refused to raise the debt ceiling. Clinton vetoed the budget. Then the first shutdown occurred.

Former President Bill Clinton deserves the bulk of the credit for balancing the budget beginning from 1996-2000, specifically in the 1996 instance where the Gov't was shut down when he defiantly vetoed the budget bill dumped on his desk by the Republican dominated Congress and Newt Gingrich, a second time.

Bill Clinton shut down the Government for a week or two and put Newt Gingrich in the back of Air Force One on a trip that the two made and then refused to speak with the man, who whined to a very unsympathetic press during that week -- the press went on to basically trash Newt for his childish behavior. Remember that?

After several temper tantrums by Gingrich, which led in part to his own demise in Congress, Bill Clinton made it clear that his goal was to only sign budgets that were balanced, that included funding for necessary items. He did the same for the next four years straight, ending the year he last held office in 2000.

Newt Gingrich of course, took credit for those balanced budgets until he was all but forced to resign his post in January of 1999. Newt's credibility was then and still remains in the toilet, which is why former President Clinton has never made a big deal over it. He came out a winner every time Gingrich opened his mouth negatively about him.

The fact will always exist that despite what the man has ever said about those years and what happened, Newt Gingrich was put in his place as a subordinate by President Bill Clinton at least twice, and about as firmly as if he had put the heel of his shoe on his neck.

He might as well give up today, because due to the actions by those who have resigned this week from his staff, his chances of going forward and having any chance at all of being nominated, just went to zero.

there're black clouds over this country that would make good subjects for cartoons, but bennett keeps pumping out cartoons to distract.

you libs keep obsessing about gingrich, who's dead in the water, and palin..who isn't even going to run. yet the liberal media made jackasses out of themselves by drooling all over her emails in a some desperate attempt to humiliate her. they ended up making themelves look like stalkers.

why not a cartoon about the massive unemployment rate among black men since obama came on the scene? why not a cartoon about obama's denial that there's even a war in libya when it's quite clear there is. why not a cartoon about his going around the war powers act? why not a cartoon about obama's attempt to use the thuggish epa to further damage the coal industry by imposing absurd regulations that will bankrupt them, and cause huge layoffs in this crappy economy?..not to mention his callous attitude toward skyrocketing electric rates that will follow.

and so much more...

you libs can ridicule paul ryan and anyone else who has an alternative plan to help our economy, but one thing is for damn sure...democrats have not freakin' solution except to spend more and more money.

The twisted moral stances of the ultra-right never cease to make me laugh and/or barf.

Right-wing candidates are constantly wrapping themselves in the flag and declaring themselves Real Americans™ with a directive from God to crush the liberal menace and restore strict Christian values to the government and the people. God-fearing, homo-stomping, government teat-hating conservatives need a 2012 Presidential candidate who upholds and demonstrates their core values of fiscal conservatism, faith, and family first. There are many names floating around out there at the moment, but you have to admit, everyone’s favorite is…Newt Gingrich.

A man so passionately patriotic he can’t keep his flag-wrapped dick to himself. - while he’s married - to women who are ill. – while at the same time trying to impeach a President for having fun on the side..like himself. Yessiree-bob, that’s what we need to reclaim America’s former glory - President Newt, instilling good Christian values and keeping the country safe from Democrats with every adulterous thrust of his Red, White and Blue swathed presidential rocket. He’s Doin’ It for AMERICA.

Remember when he pulled that “patriotism made me do it” gem out of his hypocritical poop chute last February while being interviewed at CBN, or his attempt to whitewash his serial wife-dumping past with his defiant – “how dare you question my integrity” performance at the University of Pennsylvania, where a female Student asked him about his past..ahem, indiscretions. To which he answered, “I’ll bet almost everybody here can gather the thrust of your question - I hope you feel better about yourself.” Adding, “I believe in a forgiving God, and the American people will have to decide whether that’s their primary concern. If the primary concern of the American people is my past, my candidacy would be irrelevant. If the primary concern of the American people is the future… that’s a debate I’ll be happy to have with your candidate or any other candidate if I decide to run.”

OH, SNAP Newt slapped that Liberal Hobag with his Big Republican TeaBaggin’ Pimp Hand!

Newt sees stars and stripes and messes his pants from thoughts of getting all up in that sexy flag fabric… Barry White playing in the background, sweat pouring from his doughy old body as silky red, white and blue fibers carress his wrinkly, Jesus-infused naughty bits stroke after stroke while he grinds like Charlie Sheen on a coke-fueled hooker binge.

Need some brain bleach now? You’re welcome.

Applications have been above 400,000 for 11 straight weeks. Applications had fallen in February to 375,000, a level that signals sustainable job growth. They stayed below 400,000 for seven of the next nine weeks. But then applications surged to an eight-month high of 478,000 in April and have shown only modest improvement since that time. Companies pulled back on hiring in the spring in the face of higher gas and food prices, which cut into consumer spending on other items.

In the current crop of Republican contenders, the only highly intelligent candidates are Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich. Last night Obama's speech re the withdrawal of 33,000 by Sept. 2012 against advice of the generals was to satisfy his left critics before the election. Today they announce another move to fool the people in hopes of lower gas prices. U.S. to Release 30 Million Barrels of Oil from Strategic Reserve "The Strategic Petroleum Reserve was designed for energy emergencies, not political convenience. Releasing our reserves to calm the market is emblematic of an administration whose energy policy is irrational and counter-productive," said Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., head of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. "The Obama administration's decision to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is ill-advised and not the signal the markets need," said Karen Harbert, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Energy Institute. "Our reserve is intended to address true emergencies, not politically inconvenient high prices. ... With U.S. crude oil production expected to decrease by 90 million barrels in the next year, the administration should instead focus on increasing domestic production to improve our energy security, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and create thousands of jobs," she said in a statement.

LIES, DAMN LIES, & STATISTICS

Mymy brought the issue of oil, so here's some information NOT from republicans, teanuts, or the U.S. Chamber of 'Commerce.'

"A new drilling technique is opening up vast fields of previously out-of-reach oil in the western United States, helping reverse a two-decade decline in domestic production of crude. "Companies are investing billions of dollars to get at oil deposits scattered across North Dakota, Colorado, Texas and California. By 2015, oil executives and analysts say, the new fields could yield as much as 2 million barrels of oil a day -- more than the entire Gulf of Mexico produces now.

"This new drilling is expected to raise U.S. production by at least 20 percent over the next five years. And within 10 years, it could help reduce oil imports by more than half, advancing a goal that has long eluded policymakers. "That's a significant contribution to energy security," says Ed Morse, head of commodities research at Credit Suisse."

YOU'RE ENTITLED TO YOUR OWN OPINION

Sea cow spittled, "blackwater..your last post is utterly worthless.......people are moving to texas, an overall conservative state..and fleeing from california...the liberal armpit of america......"

Some people are indeed moving to Texas because there are jobs there. 20% of those job are in the category of 'Trade, Transport, and Utility,' (OIL) thanks to rising gasoline prices. Don't you blame Obama for the high price of gas? Then you should give him the credit for creating thousands of new jobs in the Lone Star state.

blackwater...the public schools in texas suck..like all public schools suck all over the country....

Texas is special. It is dead last in adults without even a high school diploma. They are also 49th in SAT scores, 44th in per pupil spending, but it gets worse. Republicans have revised social studies text books to fit their politically motivated - if historically inaccurate - agenda. The role of Thomas Jefferson, for instance, is downplayed, as is the concept of 'Separation of Church and State.' The new text books will also assert the Christian faith of our Founding Fathers. (One reason they're downplaying Jefferson.)

so texas is to blame for natural disasters?

Rick Perry is threatening to secede from the Union one day but begging the federal government for disaster relief assistance the next. However, that's not Rick at his hypocritical best.

Perry deplores the Federal government and denounced the Stimulus, claiming “We [Texans] can take care of ourselves.” Remarkably, even though Governor Perry's budget is $27 BILLION in the hole, he still managed to expand Texas government and create 22 thousands new bureaucratic jobs. How did he pay for it? By denouncing Obama's stimulus package one day but accepting $19 billion Stimulus dollars the next .

And if that's not enough, he was also George Bush's Lt. Governor. You might say George taught Rick everything he knows about governing. Thanks to Hurricane Bush, America lost around 20% of its wealth and was plunged into the worse recession since 1929.

Here's a campaign slogan for you: "Elect Perry. Let's get it over with."

no, blackwater..you moron......that's doesn't fly......remember now..bush isn't president.

nobody feels sorry for obama...nobody blames bush at this point...even if you what you said about bush is true, which it isn't.......at this point it's abundently clear that obama is clueless and only knows how to make things worse..that's the best scenerio...

it's also clear, bilgewater, that this mess was triggered by the subprime mortage nightmare which was a democrat party creation......that's where it started....and that's a fact..

his use of the epa to attack coal companies with the intent of bankrupting them, which will result in massive job losses and huge electric bills for everyone, illustrates that he just doesn't get it. he said this would happen before he was in office...and he's going to let it happen anyway knowing how bad things are.....

and what do we get from obama's team at this point.......call for taxes on small businesses and tax increases..........

not only is obama our most clueless president ever...he's also the dumbest.

Newt is a history teacher gone astray and seems to have ignored the lessons of history.

A president or congress proposes adding a department or agency then congress approves them. These entities then take on a life of their own and grow uncontrolled. Congress empowers them to regulate, administer, levy fines, initiate litigation or in essence become a governing body beyond the three branches of government. Congress calls this abdication of their responsibility delegation. An incompetent self serving member is assigned over sight responsibility that assist growth and spending.

The federal government has manipulated state and local governments to become puppets to the federal government by using grants, incentives, matching funds and other tools of manipulation.

A business with several million employees is unmanageable with any organizational arrangement. Government is in an uncontrolled growth mode with congress, POTUS, the media and many citizens insisting on continued growth.

To see the America of the future study history. Repeat after me "it can't happen to us, we are different, we are the most powerful and wealthiest nation in history". Remember those words if you decide to study a little history.

INFORMATION PLEASE

Great posts, Al. It's hard to argue with people who insist, 'my opinions are firmly supported by what I believe.'

Anyway, for those of you who would like some perspective of gas prices, the Strategic Oil Reserve, the economy, &tc., I offer the following:

All of you tea bagging knot heads wringing your hands over releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is hilareous. High gasoline prices were the result of oil speculation, not oil shortage. Speculators believed oil prices would rise because on unrest in the Middle East so they drove up the price.

From the Wall Street Journal:

“The Obama administration's decision to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is part of a larger action by the 28 member nations of the International Energy Agency to release 60 million barrels onto the world market over the next 30 days.”

Richard Soultanian of NUS Consulting said, "The IEA's announcement appears to be nothing more than a well-timed public relations stunt designed to punish speculators."

Read that again: “Designed to punish speculators.”

Americans usually alter their driving habits when the price of gas increases whether they want to or not. Every ten cent increase in the price of gas drains around $39 million a day from consumer’s wallets.

Our economy is consumer driven. Some may think it’s a tragedy that oil companies MIGHT see a drop in profits this quarter, but save your tears. Remember, republicans insist that tax payers give $5 billion to oil companies every year for absolutely no reason.

From the same Wall Street Journal article:

"Crude and gasoline inventories are above average, and crude and gasoline prices have been trending down for weeks, despite the loss of Libyan oil, which markets have already adjusted to," said American Petroleum Institute spokesman Bill Bush.

Obama is trying to help out the little guy, the consumers, who are bearing the brunt of our brutal economy. Good for him. If you TBKHs call it pandering for votes that’s your opinion.

Besides, if oil speculators are bitching about it, it can’t be all bad.

The information is out there. Let facts help you form your opinions. Please.

Reply to alprova: It has already been shown that NEWT is just another arrogant, money driven person who has decided to stick to the Republican principles of destroying this Republic, putting it in an unbalanced condition where the middle class workers here are being depressed with the help of the "global corporate monopolies" and it's designed free trade which creates our trade deficit of $578 Billion dollars per year. This trade deficit more than doubled during Bush W.'s eight years. The facts are; There is proof that the Republicans do not want to this Republic to be strong. They are not interested in paying down our National Debt that was more than doubled during Bush W.'s eight years. But look what the Republican's strategy is and what the conditions of this Republic were when they were voted out.

Free Trade and its calamitous effect on the middle class is an under or non reported tragedy. Free trade, membership in the WTO, NAFTA, CAFTA and host of other VERY BAD policies are the greatest impediments to our recovery and economic standing in the world.

Perhaps one day you too will say to yourself, "You know, I'm going to start checking to see if what these people are saying is true. Is there something they are leaving out of the story? Is there something they are adding to it that is not correct?"*

Then you'll empower Google to take you to sources that will set you straight, and you too will one day wake up and understand that Fox News has a deep, deep agenda, and it is about as far as it can get from broadcasting "fair and balanced" news or opinions.

Let’s take a look at how well those republican governors are doing and how thrilled the voters are with their slash and burn budgets coupled with tax cuts for the fat cats. Remember, these clowns campaigned about creating jobs, jobs, jobs.

Arizona: Brewer down 8 %

Florida: Scott down 20%

Georgia: Deal down 18%

Michigan: Snyder down 25%

Ohio: Kasich down 11%

Pennsylvania: Corbett down 15%

Wisconsin: Walker down 9%

The term is 'buyer's remorse.' People may not be infatuated with Obama, but they are getting surly about what's going on in their own States.

Take a special look at two key States, Ohio and Florida. The GOP cannot regain the White House without those key battlegrounds, and right now the voters are fed up.

Good luck.

Obama Administration interference in GM after it became Government Motors: Delphi salaried retirees complain that the Obama administration approved GM's decision to set aside $1 billion to "top up" the pensions of most union retirees, including those from the United Auto Workers. That protected them from losing benefits, but the same arrangement wasn't made for salaried retirees. Some will lose up to 65 percent of benefits, as well as life and health insurance. "There is no shared pain as far as the salaried workers are concerned," said Rep. Dan Burton, R-Ind. "One segment was left to hang out to dry." Rep. Mymy, Here is today’s GOP.

Deficits present a grave threat to our way of life -- except when Republicans are in power, at which point deficits are - well - deficit-neutral. This deep and abiding concern with deficits (under Democratic administrations) stands in sharp contrast to their relative indifference to unemployment, which they consider a luxury good consumed by people with too much time on their hands. All that whining is really annoying to lawmakers, lobbyists, who want to get on with the real business of cutting budgets, and who have more important things to worry about than people who, for God's sake, can't even keep a job!

Most things can be fixed within any two-year election cycle by an infusion of venture capital from the Chamber of Commerce, Wall Street, Big Oil, the Pharmaceutical lobby, or whosoever interests could be served or threatened by some piece of legislation. These firms now require a controlling interest of 51 percent of all elected Republican officials. The futures market for political votes seems to be the only market that is working efficiently in America today.

And the “Genesis” of all GOP beliefs -

Whatever ails you (whether budget deficits, unemployment, or vaginal dryness), the solution is tax cuts for the rich.

Writing new psalms into the GOP bible is….The Tea Party! You betcha!

Also known as the crazy wing of the Republican Party, they are so orthodox they can see Russia from they’re porch (even if it’s in Miami). Republicans in this wing have electro shocked the body politic into such stupidity and are so ill informed, President Obama may well defy political gravity and get re-elected no matter how often he acts just like a Republican.

The Republicans have NO IDEAS – NOTHING.

"Time for somebody else to try to fix the twisted mess we are in." YES. The established GOP - Hell No! You said "somebody else." I'm listening..................

alprova,

I stand corrected. Are you now clear that a reference to congress includes both houses? BRP is correct, republicans are essentially impotent with the executive branch and the senate controlled by the democrats. It is a fact with Bush's participation democrats increased the debt to over $7 trillion and have now taken it to $14 trillion since Obama's selection. There is no end to the growth in sight. I don't like the republican plan to reduce the debt but at least they have a proposal on the table. Democrats passed up their chance, in fact failed to meet their budgeting responsibility. They were too preoccupied with ramming Obama care up our ass and now selectively giving waivers to their favored supporters.

It is a sad situation when Pelosi and Reid are speaker and leader. That is not to say republicans are better. Neither party will be likely to offer much with the primary qualification being seniority.

It is sad people are frightened to even consider the possibility of people serving in congress not involved with or committed to either party. It would be refreshing to have someone in office with a level of commitment to doing the right thing long term for the country equal to the commitment those in or seeking office have to being elected.

It is obvious the community organizer we elected didn't have a clue what he was getting into or what a president could and could not do. That is evident with all the kept promises not kept. When you stand in front of the country and state emphatically "I will reduce the deficit in half" "I will close Gitmo within one year" "I will reduce unemployment to under 8%" plus many others that means you are either lying or hoping. Pinning your future on hope is not a good strategy or basic plan. When in one area of the country you tell people you feel their pain and you will return their jobs to America then travel across country and say to another group "in hard times those people cling to their guns and religion" you are a first class ass.

Where has Obama leadership been on the debt crisis? Let's see he issued a bogus budget plan in February, and gave a debt speech in April that lacked any details. Obama then pushed the job of working out a debt reduction deal to Biden.

The CBO report made clear, we need immediate, and decisive action on spending if we're ever to get our debt under control.

"obstructionism" was not used by me. It was "limric" but I agree with his use of it. The Republicans used their power in 2001 to set a course when they made it a point of allowing the destruction of this Republic's strength. They could not wait to make sure that the Democrats could not clam to have nearly a trillion dollars left on the positive side and were not running a budget deficit even if the total National Debt was $5.3 trillion dollars.
When you can define what is actually classified as a small business under the tax laws and what type of small businesses that President Obama and Geitner have "done massive damage to," then we might have a more honest discussion. In the mean time you have proved to me that you do not understand what has happened to the "really small" businesses over a period of many years. All you want to do blame this administration while trying to convince the voters that because Obama and Geithner never ran a "Mom and Pop" they do not have any knowledge of what it takes to handle the finances of this Republic. Therefore, what were the conditions of this Republic long before President Obama was nominated as the Democratic candidate. "Your dog will not hunt" for what you are trying to clam. Yes, the use of "obstructionism" is is used correctly as to what the Republicans have done to hinder Obama' recovery policies.

harp3339 wrote: "Why don't you try posting the details of the democrats plan to balance the annual budget and reduce the debt?"

Balancing the annual budget is not the main concern to the Democrats because there are still too many people out of work at the moment. Balancing that budget will come when revenues increase to a point that they exceed what is spent. That much makes sense to you doesn't it?

Taxes are most definitely going to have to be raised, and substantially as well, for those making a quarter of a million dollars or more. That would be a beginning to take this country back to a point where it once was before the Republicans began eliminating the middle class in this country.

"What is their plan to have corporations invest, hire and create good jobs to reduce unemployment."

It is not the responsibility of any politician to plan for any private business to hire employees That is the role of those who utilize employees in the course of operating their businesses.

If sales rise, so will the need to put people back to work. If sales are down, they lay off workers.

No politician on the planet can make a consumer patronize a business. In a tough economic climate, such as the one we are dealing with now, only the strong and those who know how to compete will survive. It's that simple.

People that look to politicians to provide jobs, under any circumstance, might as well turn your head back during the next downpour and drown themselves.

"What is their plan to avoid bankrupting medicare?"

Clearly, the rates deducted from paychecks are going to have to be raised. They have always been artificially low. Additionally, the Government is going to have to force providers to drop their prices to that which is equal to the actual service that they provide. Insurance companies are going to have to force that hand too.

"What viable energy independence plan are they proposing?"

That's simple. More nuclear energy, wind power, solar power, and the development of electric cars. They had the best electric car on the market one time, and every one of them were ground up into little pieces because there was no after-market sales opportunities to be had. The EV-1 was too good a product.

"How do they plan to end three wars honorably?"

Honorably? You can't be serious. The honorable thing to have done was to never have invaded either country at all.

We are not building any allies as a result of our troop level involvement in any of those countries and we never will.

Load 'em up and bring 'em home. We're still spending more than a million dollars a day over there and THAT is the number one expense this country has at the moment, and WHY we are about to pop over that $14 trillion mark, but no one who leans right ever takes that into consideration. It is the invisible expense, and now it's all Obama's fault, right?

Politicans can put policies in place which discourage businesses from expanding and hiring. Here is what democrats are doing to discourage private sector growth.

On Tuesday June 21, Teasury Sec Geithner said we need to have tax increases and spending to help reduce the deficits. A tax increase during a recession is a way to prolong the recession or make it worse.

National Labor Relations board suing Boeing over a decision to build a plant in S.C. because they are a right to work state. This nothing but the Government interfering in the decision making of a private enterprise, so who or what other private decisions are going to be challenged.

According to US News, "Two new EPA pollution regulations will slam the coal industry so hard that hundreds of thousands of jobs will be lost, and electric rates will skyrocket 11 percent to over 23 percent, according to a new study based on government data." So the Obama Administration has recommended tax increases and implemented regulations that will dramatically increase electricity rates.http://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/washington-whispers/2011/06/08/coal-regs-would-kill-jobs-boost-energy-bills

As a direct result of Obama's gulf oil drilling moratorium, The Daily Caller reported "Texas-based Seahawk Drilling, the second largest shallow water drilling operator in the Gulf, announced it had filed for bankruptcy Friday and would be selling its remaining assets to Hercules Offshore." How many American jobs did the Administration kill with a policy that punished American drilling operators for the misdeeds of a foreign oil company? Will there be a shortage of drilling rigs as they move to other oil fields? http://dailycaller.com/2011/02/15/first-gulf-of-mexico-drilling-company-seahawk-files-bankruptcy-because-of-offshore-drilling-moratorium/

alprova said; It is not the responsibility of any politician to plan for any private business to hire employees That is the role of those who utilize employees in the course of operating their businesses.

This is accurate if government didn't intervene and interrupt those businesses. Government cannot and will never be the source of jobs other than their own bloated employment roles. Politicians have destroyed and killed the incentive for many businesses to expand in the U.S. Congress has favored some and punished others. Reasonable and essential regulations are necessary but grants, incentives, targeted deductions and other government intervention, unpredictable behavior and a tax rate that can and in some cases does result in an American business paying the highest tax rate in the world is the cause of the loss of millions of jobs. Business taxes and other legislatively imposed cost are included in the price of goods and services which is a way to tax those in the lower income brackets unfairly. Poorly developed trade agreements by both parties have had a negative impact. Some have survived in spite of Washington's poor treatment and abuse. Some businesses are poorly managed and I agree with those CEOs in a recent meeting that said the mistake many made was to hire to key positions without grass roots experience and accountability CPAs and MBAs.

That makes no sense whatsoever unless there is a plan to increase employment. It is about as logical as a politician or geithner's contention that government needs to increase taxes and spending to improve the economy. There was no mention of increasing consumer demand with competitively priced American made products. No mention of increasing the demand for construction work by the 20% unemployed construction workers.

The tax system should be so simple there would be no need for an H&R Block or software or an accountant to complete personal taxes. Eliminate the need for a corporation to have a large accounting organization to keep up with tax laws and opportunities. The only need and requirement should be an audit by a reputable independent accounting firm to assure taxes due are being accurately reported and paid.

The best proposal, the fairest and most stimulative would be the Fair Tax proposal. Pass as proposed and it would be so transparent it would scare hell out of politicians.

potcat instead of calling me Delusional rick Dick, why don't you take to time to educate yourself on the financial mess. Recently published book "Reckless Endangerment by New York Times reporter, Gretchen Morgenson, Financial Analyst Joshua Rosner lay out the facts of what caused the financial crisis. I know you will not believe it because it does lays blame on the democracts with Fannie and Freddie. Read how former Fannie CEO Jim Johnson who was a former adviser to Mondale and Kerry amassed a personal fortune estimated at $100 million during his nine years as CEO of Fannie Mae. "Under Johnson," Morgenson and Rosner write, "Fannie Mae led the way in encouraging loose lending practices among the banks whose loans the company bought. A Pied Piper of the financial sector, Johnson led both the private and public sectors down a path that led directly to the credit crisis of 2008."

Fannie Mae lied about its profits, intimidated adversaries, bought off members of Congress with lavish contributions, hired (and thereby co-opted) academics, purchased political ads (through its foundation) and stacked congressional hearings with friendly bankers, community activists and advocacy groups (including ACORN). Fannie Mae also hired the friends and relations of key members of Congress (including Rep. Barney Frank's partner).

"Reckless Endangerment" includes the Clinton administration's contribution to the home-ownership catastrophe. Clinton had claimed that dramatically increasing homeownership would boost the economy, instead "in just a few short years, all of the venerable rules governing the relationship between borrower and lender went out the window, starting with ... the requirement that a borrower put down a substantial amount of cash in a property, verify his income, and demonstrate an ability to service his debts."

Bush took us into two wars but now Obama has us in a 3rd.

If you want to talk about LIES, Obama lied to us when he took us into Lybia.

Well of course for your statement to be a fact, it would depend on who was taxed. If you tax potential consumers who would are most likely to spend most of what they make, then you would be correct. If you tax those who are earning great incomes in this economy and sit on it rather than to spend it, then your statement is false.

"National Labor Relations board suing Boeing over a decision to build a plant in S.C. because they are a right to work state. This nothing but the Government interfering in the decision making of a private enterprise, so who or what other private decisions are going to be challenged."

Wait a minute. As one of the top ten United States Government Contractors, Boeing signed into agreement a long time ago to certain conditions that it must abide by, hence the reason that they are in hot water with the NRLB

They are hardly a simple private enterprise and haven't been for decades. Please refer to the NRLB for more information on this case, which is complicated. You cannot put the Democrats in the middle of this one for a second, but there are a couple of very prominent Republicans who are siding with Boeing, for obvious reasons.

Read the flip side to what you think you know about the case:

http://www.iam751.org/pages/news/51911NLRBcomplaint.html

"According to US News, "Two new EPA pollution regulations will slam the coal industry so hard that hundreds of thousands of jobs will be lost...(snipped)"

Look, the coal industry is dying. It has to. We must convert to nuclear energy because coal is a major polluter of the air we breathe. Setting aside the arguments about global climatic change, coal is about the worst thing that can be burned and discharged into the air.

I would imagine that there were lots of people who made buggy whips at one time in this country, and they lost their jobs, but went on to something different. In this case, those who work in the coal mines would live a long and happy life without ten pounds of deadly coal dust in their lungs.

"As a direct result of Obama's gulf oil drilling moratorium, The Daily Caller reported "Texas-based Seahawk Drilling, the second largest shallow water drilling operator in the Gulf, announced it had filed for bankruptcy Friday...(snip)"

If so, it's filing for bankruptcy for some other reason. The fact is that the moratorium was lifted more than a year ago. Read the facts for yourself:

You're putting words in my fingers that have never been typewritten.

Everyone knows full and well that for as much as they may disagree with it, many jobs and some good companies were salvaged for the good of this country. Yeah, some bad players were saved too, but the alternative result had nothing been done was worth it. No one in their right mind would have preferred to see the number of jobs lost that would have been lost had nothing been done.

Those that say that nothing should have been done obviously do so because they know that they wouldn't have been directly affected by those companies tanking. My response is simple. Thank goodness you don't make the decisions in this nation, and hopefully, you never will in the future.

This may surprise you, but I am a proponent of the Fair Tax, however, without a successful turnover of the majority of our long-time legislators, with those opposed to the current tax system, it will never be passed.

Our politicians on both sides of the aisle have too much fun using a tax system that discourages success by people, in their games of political football.

Rick1, your digest up there is a fallacy from the word "Go."

Three former Republicans lobbied and got passed a bill to reverse the Glass-Stegal Act, put in place after the Great Depression, forbidding investment houses to own banks and insurers, and visa-versa.

Graham-Leach-Biley Act of 1999, and passed with a two-thirds, veto proof vote in Congress, set forth a nine year ride when mortgage backed securities set off a bomb in our markets.

Numerous Investment houses, with the ability to write mortgages through acquired firms that they were allowed to merge with, wrote horrendous mortgages without security precautions being part of the process. And why not? The investment firms sold them as valid investments.

Banks wrote mortgages through brokers who sprung up as glorified salesmen, knowing virtually nothing about mortgage lending practices, but who were eager to earn commissions on lending to as many people as possible, also eager to falsify applications as well. Those were also placed up for investment.

Add to this the advent and mass selling of ARMS, with time bombs written into those mortgages, and sold to people who only wanted to have a piece of the American dream -- owning their own home.

The payments were cheap for five years, then the bomb goes off and they can no longer afford the payments. Quite often, that was not disclosed to the purchaser, who also was quite often African-American as well. We've all read the stories, written by credible news agencies. Those mortgages were also sold and placed for investments.

All was well until the bombs went off, the home flippers couldn't sell the homes they obtained mortgages for, knowing that if the market changed, they would be left holding the bag. Eventually, the market dived. That began in 2008.

Suddenly, flippers were discovered. They walked away from their investments that they couldn't sell. Home prices dived. People who were disappointed with the value of a home that they bought with plans to sell short term, walked away from those mortgages. ARMs matured and people were evicted from homes they could no longer pay for.

And then a bomb went off on Wall Street and the houses of the Mae's. Why? Because they had been forced by the Gov't to purchase a great deal of the mortgages from the banks who dumped them, so that they could lend more.

The rest we have witnessed as a nation. I'm appalled that there are people willing to ignore the truth and facts, for a made up piece of fiction like the one you dumped in here.

alprova,

Your 10:38 post means we do agree on one thing. I would like to see it advance but it is not likely. Charlie Wrangle actually stated in an interview on CNBC that he opposed it because it took away congress ability to manipulate the tax system for the good of the country.

Your take on the housing system leaves out the fact that Barney Franks and Chris Dodd plus the black caucus exerted undue influence on Fanny and Freddie to back sub prime loans. Of course Freddie and Fannie are major supporters and contributors to Barney's campaign funds. Increased oil prices precipitated and hastened the collapse. It is a matter of opinion how bad bankruptcy would have been for those taking the risk. It would have hurt some wealthy people including members of congress but the healing may be much further along. The eventual damage may be worse than would have occurred at the time.

alprova, very good post!

When the US consumers continue to buy the manufactured imported goods of the global corporate monopolies, it does not help create and new jobs here in the USA. The facts are that the more imported goods bought the more manufacturing jobs lost. President Obama has been trying to get this situation reversed but also has opposition from the lobblying US Chamber of Commerce. We need these private jobs back here.

DID THE BLACK CAUCUS REALLY FUEL THE HOUSING COLLAPSE?

Rick and Harp, I don't know if you guys are unwitting dupes or shrewd spin doctors but either way you are both WAAAY off in your take on the housing bubble that burst, Wall Street's involvement in perpetrating the scheme, and, finally, who is to blame.

Rick, did you read, "Reckless Endangerment?" Did you skip over the stuff about greedy banks or how regulators ignored the ‘warning signs of an imminent disaster?’ The book reported that the level to which Wall Street banks embraced and facilitated corrupt mortgage lending was stunning.

From the get go conservatives have been trying to scapegoat Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for Wall Street's collapse and the implosion of American banks. Economist Dean Baker recently stated that while Fannie and Freddie “got into subprime junk and helped fuel the housing bubble,” they were “trailing the irrational exuberance of the private sector” and actually lost market share to private subprime lenders in the years 2002-2007, when “the volume of private issue mortgage backed securities exploded.” - In a 2006 Securities and Exchange Commission filing covering its activities in 2004, Fannie Mae stated: “We did not participate in large amounts of these non-traditional mortgages in 2004 and 2005.” In the report, Fannie Mae also noted the growth of subprime lending and reported, “These trends and our decision not to participate in large amounts of these non-traditional mortgages contributed to a significant loss in our share of new single-family mortgage-related securities issuances to private-label issuers during this period.” - Additionally, Lehman Brothers CEO Richard Fuld testified before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on October 6, 2008, that Fannie and Freddie’s failure played a minimal role in Lehman’s demise.

If you put crap on this site somebody is going to fact check you. The saying goes, 'You're entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts.'

Harp apparently was just repeating something he heard that seemed to make sense.

But Rick deliberately misrepresented the book's findings. Fannie and Freddie were certainly part of the story but they were not the alpha and the omega. In the grand scheme of things, the kids were no more than an 'iota' apiece.

“George Soros, delights in destroying another countries economy, as he has often been quoted as saying. Why, is he investing in over 30 media sources in the USA? What reason could he possibly have? Think about that access, and how beneficial it is to control them, and the news they report. The other question is, why does he have such easy access to the White House and the President? We, who love America, have to remain alert and aware that the, "Transformation Of America" that Obama spoke of in 2008, is starting to take shape. I have never seen so many of my friends and family, so concerned about their future and their children's future, under the present administration. Please, use your vote wisely in 2012, to restore America's Republic, not to bring it the Fundamental change That Obama and friends want.”

“Soros, Øbama and all of his liberal/progressive acolytes, Unions, 'Activist' Judges, Leftist teachers, professors and hate-groups, Enviro-nuts, State-run Media outlets... they all need to be cut out like the Cancer they are - before they succeed at killing their Host... Limric responded;; The above questions are generic to all flake conservatives. Always asking what are the Democrats plans, but they ostensibly mean ‘what is government’ going to do. They want it both ways while disguising it with a front of indignation.

Eat your cigarette limric. If the question and hoped for response makes me a conservative then so be it. I would like to see either party respond with:

1-Simplify the business tax code by abolishing all exceptions with a 20% tax on all profits. Regulate as needed and eliminate redundant and unnecessary regs assure fair competition then get the hell out of the way. QUIT intervening to show favor and trying to manage a business they know nothing about.

2-A good answer would be increase taxes and premiums to equal cost and consider allowing states to handle their own health care.

3-Any plan by either party would beat the hell out of what we have. Regulate as needed but access and maximize access to our own energy sources and provide incentives to the private sector with extended patents to pursue all alternatives with special emphasis on natural gas and coal. Competitive wind and solar and nuclear sources and an upgraded electrical grid will have to precede any significant expansion of electric vehicles.

4-Bring all troops home and strengthen intelligence, assure the ability to respond aggressively to any attack or verified threat. Accept the fact that collateral damage will occur and the offender may no longer be a country.

If the question and hoped for answers make me a conservative so be it and screw your liberal views. However, don't make the mistake of thinking I am or that I support the bunch of ignorant ass republicans. Keep defending the democrats whose ass you kiss. They are both self serving and seek only to be re-elected. You sound like Bush when he said something like you are either with me or against me and support the other side.

Who in office in either party would you trust to manage any business you owned and wanted it to be well managed and remain a viable business. Obama? Baehner? Pelosi? Rand? Reid? How do they justify adding 162,000 employees without the money to pay them? How in the hell do the republicans think they can reduce enough spending with no tax increases to balance the budget. Then the democrats are just as ignorant with their position to increase taxes and spend more to fix the economy. "GRID LOCK" may be the safest alternative.

What are the private global corporate monopolies and the US consumers doing to recreate jobs here in the US to prevent another great depression? We already know what the president's opponents are doing to hinder the needed recovery and push the tax paid Public service workers into the positions of not having any bargaining rights or representation where their jobs will depend on the politics and ideologies of the local religous groups.

The voters will have to decide who has done the best for the good of this country in preventing another “great depression” when the private fraudulent financial systems and the loss of manufacturing jobs created by the “global economy” caused the 2007 deep recession which cannot be corrected in the short time. Are the Republicans trying to help with any recovery problems or make them worse? It is the same Republican attitude as during the 1929 great depression, go through another great depression, weaken this Republic farther while letting the people "fend" for themselves after they have helped the "capitalist" force the loss of the middle class jobs. What kind of "transforming" actions/policies are you referring to? Do you not want everybody to have the choice of voting, working, and speaking out for their beliefs without being "black balled" because they go to the wrong "church" regardless of their abilities?

Why did Bush W. and ST Paulson need the $700 billion dollars of unfunded money in September, 2008? Again, are you even capable of posting thoughts of your own, or are you only capable of posting other people's points and links to articles?

No offense, but you haven't really established yourself in this forum as someone to be taken serious. Link posters are a dime a dozen.

Gun control is more than a little off the beaten path of today's topic and I would love nothing more than to discuss it, but only with people capable of making points on it.

I will say this much. The man lays out a good case for what he says.

Slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow laws were most definitely Gov't sponsored. Who can deny that?

Why is it so hard to understand that the gun manufacturers, the NRA, and the Gov't all are doing nothing at all to deal with the illegal guns on the streets across this entire country that are killing black and brown people every day?

I'm a card carrying NRA member of more than thirty years. I conceal and carry, legally. It's not hard to understand that the focus has always been on self-protection, but why is it that the manufacturers and the NRA have never had an ounce of concern for where illegal weapons wind up and who they kill for all the wrong reasons?

It's a legitimate question, don't you think? After all, these are human beings we're talking about. Is this more proof that embryos are all some people care about when it comes to people outside of their circle of loved ones?

bw48 I didn't say the black caucus caused the financial collapse. I am aware of the liar loans and over leveraged banks for which there has been no criminal charges. I was watching a congressional hearing when Bush and sec. Snow appeared before congress and warned them regulations needed to be enforced and that Fanny and Freddy were heading for trouble. Barney Franks almost blew an artery, spitting and sputtering and declaring F&F were in sound financial shape. Others chimed in including the black caucus leader and that dumb broad Waters from Ca. saying their concern was racially motivated. She has since been threatened with sanctions for attempting to use her influence to have TARP funds go to the bank her husband is an official in. I blame Barney Frank, Cris Dodd, the over sight committee and George Bush for being a wuss and backing off. I believe there was government complicity since there have been zero big name criminal charges with convictions. Actually I shouldn't complain since shortly after the hearing and a bad quarterly home report I did make a sinful amount of money selling bank shares short and buying put options. I thought Citibank would go bankrupt and they should have. Government intervention cost me but saved some rich people and several members of congress money that were and are heavily invested in the financial sector.

Notice how quick a settlement is reached when charges are filed or threatened. The banks and politicians want to keep people that get their information from the evening news from hearing the truth. It is not likely 535 people with a high percent of them not as smart as people give them credit for agreeing on and doing anything worth a damn for the country. Point a camera at any of them and they clatter like a goose and claim expertise on any subject.

You may have recovered recently from some illness, but there is one you will never recover from: thinking The One is a good Prez and believing this country is going in the right direction with the Democrats! They consider you so brain dead because you believe everything they say. I don't believe everything either party says. These days it's choosing which is the least of the worst. I did that in 2008. At this point any choice other than O is the correct choice again.

So continue your trip into La La Land. My trip is into the sad future of this country if things are not turned about. I’m not alone by a “long shot” and that is growing day by day.

What I’m waiting for is the next Obama trick or lie to make things look like they are improving and many will continue to be fooled!

BW48, I did not misrepresent the facts you just can not except the fact that Frank, Dodd, Maxine Watters, Kendra Meeks support Fannie and Freddie and even praised Freddie CEO Franklin Raines when he was running the company into bankruptcy and cooked the books worse then Enron. Or the fact the Frank's boyfriend had a high level position at Fannie, and I notice you do not want nto address Clinton's involement or Jim Johnson's.

Al, I did not put words in your fingers. Sounds like you are back tracking on what you first posted. So Al what is it, does the govt provide jobs to all or pick and chose who they want to survive.

Al, you really believe the IAW Union is going to give you ab accurate account of Boeing? You are a lost cause if you do. So we are now going to have the President tell companies where they can and can not locate. Look for a lot of company expansion if the govt wins this one.

Al, dco you really thin this is a good time to raise taxes on small businesses when they are struggling and not expanding?

Obama did not lift the ban on deep water drilling until Jan 2011 not a year ago like you put in your post. Go back and re read your link. Even at that time they were only issuing 13 permits in Jan 2011 and the moratorium started in April 2010. So for you to suggest that there maybe other reasons they went bankrupt is a reckless statement to make.

I believe we should have more nuclear also but Obama wants to bankrupt the coal industy. What will that do to states like WV, Ky, Pa and others that produce coal. This is one of those industries Obama wants to fail and does not care what happens to the workers.

potcat, I gree with your post that Obama is a fraud. What I find interesting is that is what Seamonkey, BRP, Rolondo and others have posted and you have attcaked them for it.

He speaks the truth and from a perspective that you probably have never seen up close. Have you ever lived or worked in Jersey City or in the slums of Chicago as a police officer? Of course you haven't.

"I would get up and walk out of any church that crossed the line."

I shudder to think of the kind of church you attend and endorse.

"I could care less what you think Mr. Know It All."

I'm glad to read that. Because you could care less, it's nice to know that you do.

"You may have recovered recently from some illness, but there is one you will never recover from: thinking The One is a good Prez and believing this country is going in the right direction with the Democrats!"

That's a matter of opinion, and one that bothers me not in the least. There's more like me than you could ever imagine, and so few of you with your faces screwed up in anger all the time for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

"They consider you so brain dead because you believe everything they say. I don't believe everything either party says. These days it's choosing which is the least of the worst. I did that in 2008. At this point any choice other than O is the correct choice again."

I'm sorry that you have such a poor outlook of politics, but then it shows in all your posts. You look at everything pessimistically. I on the other hand am an optimist all day long.

"So continue your trip into La La Land. My trip is into the sad future of this country if things are not turned about. I’m not alone by a “long shot” and that is growing day by day."

There's a few of you around and for some reason, you hang around in here, but your posts prove that all of you are rude, negative, silly people with nothing positive going for any of you. You are great entertainment.

"What I’m waiting for is the next Obama trick or lie to make things look like they are improving and many will continue to be fooled!"

If you live in this area, you should be fully aware that things have greatly improved. That's not a lie. If you have been fooled into believing that your life sucks for some reason, then that is your problem.

You see, I haven't read anywhere in this forum, any testimonies about how President Obama has directly affected them negatively on some personal level.

All I read is hate and disguised prejudice day in and day out from the usual suspects. Never have I read one sustainable point of fact as to how the President of this fine nation has directly and personally harmed someone in a verifiable manner.

So who's going to rise to that challenge or shut up about something that we all know is not the real reason that they dislike Obama?

I never disagreed with the Stimulus Packages, even those Bush set in motion.

"Al, you really believe the IAW Union is going to give you ab accurate account of Boeing? You are a lost cause if you do."

I'm more concerned with the way you set up that sentence. Your position clearly is that because the union has a side in this, that they are automatically lying about what Boeing did to them.

Did you read even a little or did you reject it immediately?

"So we are now going to have the President tell companies where they can and can not locate. Look for a lot of company expansion if the govt wins this one."

Why are you putting President Obama in this? He has nothing to do with it nor has he expressed any opinion about it, to the best of my knowledge. This is why you people always look silly -- "It's all Obama's fault.!"

"Al, dco you really thin this is a good time to raise taxes on small businesses when they are struggling and not expanding?"

Don't try to run that GOP fluff by me. It's a good time to raise taxes on the rich who used to fund the Government. Very few "small businesses" would be affected by the proposed rolling back of the Bush tax cuts, and that is a verifiable fact.

Small businesses were not afforded a tax cut when it was given. The ultra-rich were.

"Obama did not lift the ban on deep water drilling until Jan 2011 not a year ago like you put in your post. Go back and re read your link."

It states clearly that permits began being issued in June 2010 and that 56 thus far have been issued. I don't know what to tell you.

"So for you to suggest that there maybe other reasons they went bankrupt is a reckless statement to make."

Do you really know why they went Bankrupt? They were not put out of business. They never ceased operations. They were prevented from doing business as it once was known, and they admit it in their filing. Stringent regulations did slow down their business and justifiably so. Ask the eleven men who were killed and those fishermen still dealing with oil in the Gulf.

"I believe we should have more nuclear also but Obama wants to bankrupt the coal industy. What will that do to states like WV, Ky, Pa and others that produce coal. This is one of those industries Obama wants to fail and does not care what happens to the workers."

Those workers will be just fine. Contracts written into every union representation provide for retraining and compensation while they are relocated into other occupations. That's something you and I do not have if we are canned from a job or eliminated for some reason.

They've known for years that coal miners are a dying breed.
