Flames split two at Trevecca

Lee University, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA preseason baseball poll, is 15-5 after beating Trevecca Nazarene 9-1 but then losing 2-0 at the Nashville school Tuesday.

Lee's Flames scored seven runs in the sixth inning of the first game but totaled only two hits, pinch-hit singles by Preston Scoggins and Seth Walker, off three Trevecca pitchers in game two. Walker had a three-run home run in the first game for Lee, when Michael Brown and Justin Marrero each was 3-for-4 with a double. Brown and Travis Anderson scored two runs apiece, and Curtis Camilli pitched a three-hitter.

Matt Tidwell had one of the hits for Trevecca (11-6) in the first game and was 3-for-3 in game two.

Tennessee Temple's game at Tennessee Wesleyan was postponed until today because of the field condition after Monday's storm. Bryan dropped to 11-5 with a 6-3 loss to Berry.

n Covenant 11, Oglethorpe 7: At Covenant, Luke Furuto had a two-out grand slam and another RBI and scored twice, Taylor Oldham hit a three-run homer and scored three runs and Jared Carlson had a two-out, full-count, two-run double for the Scots (7-1). Winning pitcher Wes McDowell allowed two runs in five innings.

n Georgia Perimeter 4-4, Cleveland State 3-6: At Cleveland, Galen Smith was 2-for-4 with a grand slam, Gray Hutchinson drove in the other two runs and Grant Zawadzki was 2-for-4 and scored twice as the host Cougars (9-7) salvaged a split. Trevor Burgess walked three times and also scored twice, and Alex Moore got the pitching win with three innings of one-run, five-strikeout relief. Hutchinson and Ryan Mutchnick had RBI singles in the first game.

Covenant tops Bryan

Chelsea Krafft pitched a five-inning three-hitter for a win and then got a save as Covenant defeated the first-year Bryan softball team 10-2 and 10-5 Tuesday at Warner Park.

Beth Harris was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Lindsay Potter also had three RBIs in the first game for the Lady Scots (4-0), while Kristen Walker was 1-for-2, scored twice and had an RBI. Kim Cuticchia was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Harris scored three runs, Jennie Jobe had two RBIs and Courtney Wagoner homered for Covenant in game two, when Taylor Yates was 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs for Bryan (2-20). Kristina Bailey and Brooklyn Jenkins had two hits each in that game for the Lions; Jenny Keener was 1-for-2 with two RBIs in game one.

n Walters State 6-5, Cleveland State 5-2: At Cleveland, Abby O'Rear drove in three runs with two singles in the first loss for the Lady Cougars (6-6), and Madison McKinney had an RBI hit in each game. Lindsey Loudermilk totaled five RBIs for Walters.
