The Lee University basketball teams met different fates Thursday as the top East seeds and highest nationally ranked teams in the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament at Rome, Ga.

The Lady Flames, ranked No. 11 in NAIA Division I, overcame a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Emmanuel 60-54 in the women’s quarterfinals at Darlington School, but the 14th-ranked Flames lost a slight halftime edge and their game at the Forum, 59-49, to Loyola of New Orleans.

Hollie German scored 14 points and fellow guards Brooke McKinnon and Angela Spann added 13 and 12 for the Lee women (25-5), who face Loyola today at 2 at the Forum. Ashley Jackson and 13 rebounds with 12 points for Emmanuel (17-14).

Antonio Haymon had 18 points and nine rebounds but no one else scored in double figures for the Flames (22-8), who now hope for an at-large spot in the NAIA nationals. Reserve Matt Stilwell had nine points, and Roy McFadgon in 12 minutes matched Haymon’s rebound total. Ryan Brock had 21 points and Darrington Moncrieffe had six blocked shots and 11 rebounds for Loyola (16-13).

Lady Tigers advance

In the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII tournament at Dyersburg, Tenn., the top-seeded Chattanooga State women reached the semifinals by defeating Motlow State 61-43. The Lady Tigers will face Cleveland State at 5 p.m. EST Saturday.

April Woodard and Kim Manning scored 16 and 13 points for Chattanooga State, and Hiydaayah Williams had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Cleveland’s Lady Cougars defeated Volunteer State 75-52 and Kierra Johnson and Mariah Lawrence scored 18 and 17 points. Johnson also had nine rebounds, and Takeya Day had eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals. RaShawn Sparkman scored 18 points for Vol State.

Crystal Moore had 15 points and eight rebounds and Jayme Jackson and Callisha Johnson scored 14 points each as Motlow won 80-74 over Columbia in the first round Wednesday.

In the Cleveland State men’s 82-75 win over Vol State late Wednesday, Phillip Jenkins scored 21 points, Keith Johnson had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Terrell Parks scored 14 points. The Cougars (13-14) face top-seeded Motlow at 7 tonight EST, after Chattanooga State’s Tigers face Roane State at 5.
