Chattanooga State men win

Latraius Mosley’s 3-point shot broke a late tie, and the Chattanooga State men’s basketball team edged Roane State 69-67 to join the Lady Tigers in the NJCAA Region VII tournament semifinals today in Dyersburg, Tenn.

The Tigers (23-5) missed four free throws after Mosley’s shot but got defensive stops, and Alex Wells made two free throws for a five-point lead. Jonathan Maybank hit a 3 for Roane (16-11) and the Raiders got the ball back on a turnover but couldn’t get off a shot in the last four seconds despite taking five timeouts to set one up.

Alex Dean had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Chattanooga State, while Mosley had 12 points and Wells and Michael Robertson scored 10 each. Maybank scored 18 in defeat.

The Tigers face Columbia State today. Top-seeded Motlow State also reached the men’s semifinals by beating Cleveland State 80-47. Darryn Frazier scored 14 points for the Bucks, who took a 35-4 lead.

Keith Johnson had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars (13-15).

n Loyola (w) 72, Lee 70: After knocking Lee’s men out of the SSAC tournament Thursday in Rome, the New Orleans school beat the 11th-ranked Lady Flames in overtime in Friday’s semifinals. League player of the year Brooke McKinnon scored 31 points for Lee (25-6), while Angela Spann scored 19, Kayla Carlisle grabbed 11 rebounds and Rachel Lockhart made six steals.

Keiva Council and Amy Moody scored 22 points apiece for Loyola (20-11), Council winning the game at the free-throw line with 3.8 seconds left in the extra period. Kally Eldridge had hit a 3 for Lee with 9.8 to go.

n Covenant 58, Berry 54: In a tournament of provisional NCAA Division III members, the Scots overcame a 13-point deficit and beat a team that had beat them twice during the season. Casey Chambers and Chase Foster scored 15 and 13 points for Covenant, countering 23 by Tim Miles, and will play Birmingham-Southern today.
