Unum has donated staff time, company resources and created a more than $500,000 multiyear partnership with Hamilton County schools, and Monday the Chattanooga-based insurer was honored for its commitment to education.

The United Ways of Tennessee presented Unum with their Corporate Teaching Effectiveness Champion award, recognizing the mentoring, principal leadership and several other programs the company initiated to help local schools.

"Of all the causes Unum supports, public education is the largest," Tom White, Unum's senior vice president of investor relations, said in a media release. "A strong community and a strong workforce begin with a solid educational foundation. For companies like ours to continue thriving, we must have a capable, well-educated workforce. That's why advancing public education is a priority."

UWTN also gave Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam their 2011 Advocacy Leadership Award for his work improving local education, financial stability and health.
