Shots fired as 300 teenagers fight at Coolidge

A fight that broke out among an estimated 300 young people at Coolidge Park on Saturday night is all too similar to a fight that happened in the park almost a year ago, Chattanooga police said.

It’s not clear what the fight was about, but police on the scene heard five to seven shots shortly before 10 p.m., said police Sgt. Rick Mincy, patrol supervisor for North Chattanooga.

By 10:30 p.m. Saturday, no injuries had been reported, and police still were looking for the shooter, who was believed to be armed with a .38-caliber handgun.

Mincy said at least 85 percent of the crowd were teens, though young children were in the crowd.

“It was a just a huge group of unsupervised kids, and tensions just flared. It was a recipe for disaster,” Mincy said.

A juvenile was taken into custody for attempting to attack an officer, according to Mincy, who tackled the suspect.

Cousins LaKeyila Hyter, 15, and Neenee Coby, 8, said they had been dropped off by a relative.

“I heard them fire those shots, and I just ducked under a car,” Hyter said.

“I just ran in the other direction,” Coby said.

Mincy said it was too early to tell whether gang activity was involved.

He likened the fracas to a similar fight involving 200 to 250 people on March 28, 2010.

They had gathered in response to Facebook and text messages. Police moved in to break up the rowdy crowd, and someone pulled a gun and started shooting, according to Chattanooga Times Free Press archives.

As the crowd scattered along River Street, bullets hit five people in the legs. None of the injuries were fatal.

In 2010, police charged Anthony Frieson, 18, and Taurean Patillo, 18.

Frieson was charged with five counts of attempted first-degree murder, five counts of aggravated assault and one count of felony reckless endangerment.

Patillo was charged with five counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon. A juvenile also was charged in the incident.

They should have just let them fight it out and kill one another; the crime rate would drop a point or two.

Once again, put a bunch of black people in the same location and violence erupts. They've been taught by their mamas and other relatives that violence is the way to solve differences with other people.

It's funny how I never see these racist comments on the FaceBook edition of the TFP. It's only when these cowards can be anonymous do they speak out. The world is watching you Chattanooga, and what do you have to show: out of control youth and racist adults.

What's really not funny is that none of those kids live on this of the river and if they want to do that crap keep it in their own yard not over here. It wouldn't of been funny if an innocent person was shot or beat up now would it. Problem is in the home. Parents should be arrested for dropping their kids off or not knowing where their kids are. Kids should be arrested too, what I saw last night was ridiculous. Guess we all have to carry guns now just for self defense.

Seasmokie, just speaking the truth. Can you deny what I said is true? Tell me why these young black youth use violence to resolve differences. Speaking the truth doesn't make one a racist. It is what it is. You and others throwing the racist word around means nothing anymore. Its typical black response to a white person saying anything negative about blacks even if it is true.
I for one am tired of hearing and reading about this same crap happening over and over.

A relative dropping off a 15 year old and an 8 year old??? What kind of "parent" or "relative" would do that??? This is getting out of hand, people. This is the kind of garbage that leads kids into the jail system-perhaps it's a family thing...It if was good enough for Mom,Dad or Uncle Jim Bob surely it's good enough for them. "Here, son, let me show you how to fire that thing.."

Collectively, the business community has invariably ignored the long term social impact of their decisions. Their focus is, and has always been, on immediate self gradification, no matter what the cost. Chattanooga is still paying for business decisions made over two hundred years ago. The difference between Chattanooga and Dalton, is that many of Dalton's decision makers get to share the consequences.

"Although much of the American public now views welfare dependency as a Black cultural trait, the welfare system systematically excluded Black people for most of its history"

Another interesting fact: Techwood Homes was the first public housing project in the United States. It was dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1935, but not completed until 1936. Techwood Homes was initially provided public housing for white families only.

Harry is right. We need more public art statues and installations in Coolidge Park. That way the kids will have something to hide behind when the bullets start flying.

What the article does not report is that the Police Officers that were working, were working in addition to their regular shift. Even though they were working "overtime hours" they did not receive "overtime" pay. Officers continue to put their lives on the line even though the Mayor, and council, feel that Officers don't deserve compensation for working overtime. The Mayor and the city council continues to ignor public safty while the shootings and killing continue to add up. They have ignored the opinions and suggestions from the most experienced public safty officials in Hamilton county, Chief Dodd, Sheriff Hammond, Chief Gobble, and retired Chief Cooper. I guess the Mayor and council know more about Police work than the Police. The Mayor is the blame for the extreme Officer shortage. When Littlefield took office (six years ago) he cut out the step raises, which affects the Police/Fire Pension. Then he put a highering freeze in play which caused the Police department to be about 70 Officers short, which also affects the ammount of money that Officers can pay into the pension. Then as crime began to go up he cuts overtime at a time when Officers are needed to work longer hours due to the crime. At the same time the mayor and council cut insurance for retirees. Then they took several much needed Officers off of the streets and out of neighborhoods by parking the patrol cars. Now the Mayor and council feel like Police Officers and Fire Fighters do not deserve a retirement and are planning on taking the pension away from them. The Mayor and city council should be ashamed and their attacks on the Police, and Fire, departments are unacceptable. It is a well know fact that the Mayor is not know for his truthfulness and his distructive actions have got to stop before we loose our city. The Mayor has stated several times that he is pushing for consolidation. He knows that the citizens do not want this, but he doesn't care. If he can deplete the Police Department down so far that the service can no longer be provided by the Police, then the Sheriff will have to step in and take over, with no vote from the people. That is "FORCED CONSOLIDATION". After "FORCED CONSOLIDATION" there is MORE "FORCED ANNEXATION". I hope that the citizens will stand up and support the Police, and Fire Fighters, as we defend this city from the Mayor, city council, while trying to fight crime and save lives at the same time.

Who cares if it was Black, White , Mexican, Asian, etc....NEEDS TO STOP !!! We pay taxes to our city and county govt. to put an end to this kind of stupidity. Police cannot stop it all, it is up to the parents, city and county officials and most important the kids who are involved. Somewhere these kids have lost the value of life and love for each other. I have custody of a 9 year old WHITE child who is like these kids who were in Cooledge Park last night. We take him to counseling, church, and do our best to turn things around but it scares me that if there aren't any more changes soon he will be there too. This is not about race or poverty or social standing! Our schools in low income areas have some outstanding teachers but the school buildings are falling in and a disgrace. We are all to be held accountable! I would love to go down town at night and walk around and feel safe with my family but not with this going on. They are not even afraid of the police respect! I am behind these police 100% when it comes to taking care of our safety! Our priorities have been misplaced! We are always looking to blame when we are all somewhat at blame for letting this get out of hand.

I agree with Phil Grubb's and SophieD77's comments. This is not a black/white/race issue. This is a Disrespect for the community, Authority and our fellow man issue. We have spent millions of dollars on building and maintaining this park and promoting it as a tourist attraction and now we can't even use it without fearing for our safety! I feel sorry for the tourists that come to Chattanooga because they don't know to stay away from this area. Wonder how the Mayor of Chattanooga and City Council are going to handle it when a tourist gets injured or killed due to this type of problem. How will we look as a tourist destination then? We need to realize that Police and Fire Protection are not free, these services are not the area we need to cut back on if we want to continue to have these services. If the Mayor of Chattanooga and City Council are allowed to continue to take and take and take from these public servants, we are not gonna have any public servants left willing to put their lives on the line for this community!!! I hope the public will support our Police and Fire service employees and let the powers to be know that cutting back on these services is not an option.

1) don't blame the kids, BLAME THE PARENTS!! Read the article: A 15 yr old and an 8 yr old (EIGHT!!) just getting dropped of and left!! GET THE PARENTS!! 2) remember, people also live in that area, if i lived there i would NOT put up with it! I'm a chattanooga native and I've been out at coolidge park on summer nights. (I'm saying this as a black male) Coolidge Park turns into the hood at night! Throw race out the window, it's true. My question is what is there to do about it? Seriously. If you start banning certain people from being there during certain hours it's going to look extremely racist. On the other side if you keep things as they are, nothing is gonna change. It's tough.

Get real...Wilder and Real Truth...the Welfare system and the first housing projects may HAVE been for the whites but the blacks wasted NO time in catching up...after all for YEARS blacks had one baby after another because welfare would send a check for every baby born until it was forced to put a limit on it...yes, yes I know...Whites were just as guilty but NOT at the rate blacks were. Liberal Courts and Liberals in general (read Democrates) are to blame for removing prayer and disipline from schools thereby tying the schoolteachers and principals hands. Teachers take all kinds of abuse and are attacked on a daily basis from disrespectful kids and their parent(s) who back them up!! These are the same parents/relatives who "drop off" unsupervised kids. They don't care and show no remorse or responsibility for their role is this mess and when their kids are standing in front of a Judge they act as if it's the systems/policemans fault who had to arrest their child. GIVE ME A BREAK!! The majority race in the prison population alone is proof who is doing the murders and robberies. The blacks in prison dropped out of or skipped school, joined gangs and seem to think it's their "right" to shoot anyone who looks at them wrong. And the taxpayer has to foot the bill for all of this stupidity and nonsense!!

I DO know there are many good decent caring black families who don't put up with disrespect from their kids towards their teachers and/or authority. These are the black kids that are graduating from HS/college and going on to good jobs and careers. THESE kids and THEIR parents are the role models for the African-American community.

I totally agree about not letting gangs take over, but not just in North Chattanooga but everywhere in this city. When the gang problem here has been allowed to become so huge that you have to be afraid to stop for gas for fear of being struck by a stray bullet, there is a huge problem.

The kids who are not in gangs cannot even be kids. They can't have teen parties. They can't hang out at the mall, the movies, the skate rink, or apparently go on school field trips.

You're right, we can't even go downtown to Coolidge Park as a family and enjoy the city. With all of that said, the mayor needs to acknowledge this gang problem and come up with strong deterrents. He needs to team up with the Police department, Juvenile Court, the Hamilton County Department of Education, Family and Children Services and the Chattanooga Housing Authority. All of these entities need to get on the same page and come up with a coalition to stomp out this gang problem.

I don't pay taxes to be barricaded in my home. When you ignore a problem because it is not happening in your neighborhood or in your tax bracket, the problem can still touch you in other ways. These children need outreach, these adults who perpetuate gangs need incarceration, and the parents of the children living in these gang zones need mandatory awareness and then consequences - especially if these families are being assisted by the government. Although, these kids know right from wrong, a lot of times they've seen so much wrong at home, they have been conditioned to think it 'is' right or that there won't be any consequences.

Folks, I dont know about you but this mayor seems to be living in a make believe world...he has spent more and more money out of the city budget and claims we are broke. How can that be when he has 5 to 6 people in created positions that make more than 100k a year. And the money spent on ART...I do belive this is a good thing but Im sure a artist who wants attention and to be discoverd would donate it for exposure and it would not cost the city 50 to 100k a year. He then gives his created positions and others a 400 dollar car allowance a year...Im sorry that got rolled in to a yearly raise. All of this was approved by our city council...Folks these people work for us not the other way around. Why do these people act like they are using our tax dollars as their own stash of cash for what ever they feel like. Yes people there are gangs in our city...bad people do bad things...This requires POLICE which this mayor seems not to have a problem with cutting that budget, cutting police cars on the streets, etc. This mayor is wrong with what he is doing with tax money and he is wrong for causing a public saftey issue. How much more can this city take from mayor littlefield and his city council, the back bone of this city is the POLICE, FIREFIGHTERS, and its PUBLIC WORKS. The citizens of CHATTANOOGA need to take back our city and make our elected officals do what they where elected to do...we love our town, stand up and support our POLICE, FIREFIGHTERS and our PUBLICWORKS men and women!!! with out these people the city would not be what it is today...WHAT DOES MISSY CRUTCHFIELD REALLY DO???
