* Landmarks or geographic features: Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Finley Stadium.

* Unique characteristics: Main Street has become home to a host of restaurants, local businesses, boutiques and art galleries. More than a dozen nationalities are represented by residents in the Southside.

* Most famous resident: Football Hall of Famer Reggie White attended Howard High School, where he played football.

* Historic info: As Chattanooga flourished with the construction of the railroads in the mid-1800s into the 1900s, the Southside became the hub of Chattanooga - home to hotels, businesses and the post office. The Grand Terminal Station, opened in 1909, clinched Chattanooga's reputation as a railroad town and inspired the 1941 Glenn Miller song "Chattanooga Choo Choo." In the 1970s, local businessmen bought the building, turning it into a hotel.

* Odd/unique traditions: MainX24, a 24-hour festival on Main Street; Chattanooga Market at the First Tennessee Pavilion operates seasonally on Sundays.

* Schools: Battle Academy, Orchard Knob Middle School, Howard School of Academics and Technology.

* Best-kept secret: Whether it's an antique birdcage or a clawfoot tub, you never know what you'll stumble upon at the Estate of Confusion, a resale shop at 301 E. Main St.

* Fun fact: Zarzours, which at 90-plus years is the city's oldest family-run restaurant, is at 1627 Rossville Ave.
