Crews began cutting back invading foreign plants and stabilizing the riverbanks around Moccasin Bend National Archaeological District, a 755-acre knob of land formed by a bend in the Tennessee River just west of downtown. The bend was home to American Indian settlements as early as 10,000 years ago, and scientists still study it today for clues about its ancient residents. Supporters hope the park, now classified as part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, can stand alone as its own national park and join the slew of other parks in Hamilton County.
