GREENSBORO, Ga. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is second at 573 after 36 holes in the Linger Longer Invitational tournament at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Plantation. Fourth-ranked Alabama leads at 562, and No. 15 Stanford and No. 13 Georgia are third and fourth at 575 and 580. UTC's Stephan Jaeger is third individually after two 69s, and Benni Weilguni is tied for fourth at 139. Steven Fox is tied for 19th at 147 and Chris Robb and Davis Bunn share 39th place at 151. Jaeger is one stroke behind Alabama's Bud Cauley, whose teammate Cory Whitsett has a five-stroke lead.
- Lee University junior Jeremy Lawson from Hixson was announced Monday as the Southern States Athletic Conference golfer of the week after shooting an 18th-place 215 in the loaded Camp LeJeune Championshp. He follows teammate Tyler Smith as the league honoree.
Fishing
- Andy Morgan of Dayton and Wesley Strader of Spring City finished 15th and 16th in the pro division of the Walmart FLW Tour bass tournament this past weekend on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina. Morgan totaled 40 pounds, 14 ounces in the first three days, and Strader totaled 40-4. Each earned $12,500. Jason Christie of Park Hill, Okla., won by 10 pounds with 70-11 for four days.
Softball
GPS alumnae Jessica Phillips and Kamri Chester and Calhoun (Ga.) graduate Maddie McKinley went 8-for-11 for Memphis in a 15-6 softball victory at Texas-El Paso on Sunday. Phillips, in fact, was named Conference USA co-hitter of the week Monday for her school- and league-record three home runs in that game, including the grand slam that ended it. The junior first baseman also set a school record with 12 total bases Sunday. She also had a triple, nine RBIs and a .455 batting average in the three-game sweep of UTEP and leads the Tigers (21-7, 6-3) with a .297 average, nine homers and 25 RBIs this season. McKinley had two homers, four RBIs and three runs in Sunday's game and scored seven times while batting .583 in the series. Chester was 3-for-3 with two doubles Sunday.
UTC senior third baseman Tiffany Baker from East Ridge was the Southern Conference softball player of the week for her eruption in the Lady Mocs' 9-0 and 13-2 sweep of Appalachian State on Sunday. Baker had a grand slam and another homer in the first game and totaled seven RBIs and four runs in the doubleheader. She is the third Lady Moc to be a 2011 SoCon player of the week.
Carson-Newman catcher Bri Shoemake from Ooltewah was 5-for-7 with an RBI and a run scored in the Lady Eagles' 2-0 and 5-3 softball wins Sunday at Limestone College. Sara Kelley, another former Lady Owl, had an RBI triple in the first game and an RBI double in game two. Former Lookout Valley star Lance Rorex drove in two runs in Carson-Newman's 6-5 baseball win Sunday at Mars Hill.
Basketball
- The Chattanooga Steam under-15 boys' basketball team began its tournament season by winning the Mountain Jam this past weekend at Pigeon Forge and Jefferson City, Tenn. Coached by Mike Sholl, the Steam went 5-0 in the YBOA event with a 53-51 overtime win over the Tennessee Celtics from Knoxville in the final. Ben Sinder averaged 16 points a game and Kile Sholl and Lance Estus averaged 12 and 11 for the Steam, who got 9 apiece per game from Jeremiah Nason and Hall Allen.
SENIOR SPORTS
- The registration deadline for the annual Chattanooga District Senior Olympics is Friday, and organizers are making a special push for more volleyball, softball and three-on-three basketball teams. Chattanooga had the largest participation in the state last year with 471 competitors in 21 sports. The event is open to men and women who turn 50 or older this year, competing in age groups of five-year increments. They can be Tennessee residents or live in Georgia or Alabama within 30 miles of the Hamilton or Marion county state line. For more information see www.AlexianBrothers.net or call 755-6114. Cycling
- King College cyclist T.J. Killelea from Chattanooga finished ninth in the men's 45-mile "B" race this past weekend in competition at Clemson University. King's Ellie Ferguson and Caroline Gentry each was second to the other in a women's "B" event, and Casey Stallard was second in the men's "C" road race.
