Chattanooga Lookouts shut out 3-0 by Jackson

The Chattanooga Lookouts are not producing many base runners these days, and those who do get on are taking themselves off.

Pedro Baez got picked off first and Scott Van Slyke got doubled off first Sunday afternoon at AT&T Field as the Lookouts lost 3-0 to Jackson. The loss was the fourth in a row for Chattanooga, which dropped to 12-12.

"These guys have to be accountable for what they're doing out there," Lookouts manager Carlos Subero said. "What else can I say? You get picked off first by not going back and not sliding into the base, and you get doubled up on a line drive after we had stressed the pitch before about not getting doubled up.

"We do plenty of base running in practice. It's a matter of execution."

Baez and Van Slyke accounted for three of Chattanooga's six hits, but their gaffes spoiled the team's second and seventh innings.

"It's just been mental mistakes, and we've got to nip it in the bud now so it doesn't happen later when we're trying to win this thing," Van Slyke said. "You can't make outs on the bases when you're not hitting. If you're hitting the ball well, you can get away with a few like that, but not at times like this."

Jackson starting pitcher Anthony Vasquez allowed five hits in seven innings while striking out seven. He faced the minimum in five of the first six innings due to Baez's blunder and a double play to end the sixth.

The Lookouts announced before the game that expected starter Chris Withrow was being put on the disabled list and would be replaced by Joe Newby, who made his season debut. Chattanooga pitching coach Chuck Crim believes Withrow will be back in the rotation later in this 10-game homestand.

Newby has played in the minor leagues for Oakland and Seattle, and he went 1-1 with a 2.72 ERA in 28 appearances with West Tenn in 2009. The 29-year-old played last season in Independent ball.

"I thought he came in here and did a great job," Crim said. "He gave us five strong innings, and he gave us a chance to win."

Newby had retired seven straight when Ralph Henriquez doubled to left with two out in the fifth inning. Brandon Haveman followed with a triple to right-center to give the Generals a 1-0 lead.

Jackson maintained its one-run advantage until scoring twice in the ninth. Henriquez tripled to center with two out to bring in Nate Tenbrink, who drew a one-out walk, and an ensuing infield hit by Haveman capped the scoring.

Haveman and Henriquez each went 3-for-4, with Henriquez collecting a single, double and triple.

Will Savage (2-0, 3.38) is scheduled to start tonight's 7:15 series finale for the Lookouts, with Steven Hensley (0-1, 1.76) scheduled for the Generals.
