Obama says Bin Laden killed in operation inside Pakistan

By New York Times News Service

WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama announced late Sunday that Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaida responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks, was killed in a firefight during an operation that he ordered Sunday inside Pakistan, ending a 10-year manhunt for the world’s most wanted terrorist. U.S. officials were in possession of his body, he said.

“On nights like this one,” the president said, “we can say that justice has been done.”

The fate of Ayman al-Zawahri, the al-Qaida second in command, was unclear.

The death of bin Laden is a defining moment in the U.S.-led war on terrorism. What remains to be seen is whether the death of the leader of al-Qaida galvanizes his followers by turning him into a martyr, or whether it serves as a turning of the page in the war in Afghanistan and gives further impetus to the Obama administration to bring U.S. troops home.

Obama said that on Sunday, a small team of U.S. operatives launched a “targeted assault” on a compound in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad where months of intelligence work had established that bin Laden was living. Bin Laden was killed after a firefight, and the troops took custody of his body. The killing ended a 10-year manhunt in which bin Laden repeatedly eluded his pursuers, deeply frustrating the Bush administration and counterterrorism officials.

The news of the death of the leader of al-Qaida electrified the world — crowds gathered outside the White House, cheering, as they waited for the president to confirm the news.

Bin Laden was able to elude capture by hiding out in the mountains of Afghanistan and elsewhere. He initially escaped from Tora Bora in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan after a U.S. invasion routed the Taliban, his protectors. Since then, he issued some 30 messages, in audio, video or electronic text, sometimes taunting, sometimes gloating, sometimes urging new terrorist attacks. Intelligence officials believe the messages were passed from hand to hand repeatedly to obscure any trail back to his hiding place.

Even while in hiding, bin Laden remained a potent symbolic figure. And U.S. officials believe, based on intercepted communications from second- and third-tier al-Qaida operatives, that he also still helped shape al-Qaida’s strategy.

Yeah, Good Job, Obama.

For all you tin foil hat theorists and racists, you can finally move off the birth certificate and now focus on Wildman's idiotic comment. What it boils down to is you will never accept a black man as your President, No matter what great things he has done.

I won't believe it until I see the long-form death certificate. I can't wait for Trump to get to the bottom of this!

Sorry, Wildman. Your comment sounded like the new talking points for conspiracy theorists. Why did they bury him at sea? Blah, blah, blah...

I've requested my comment be removed. Don't know if it will. We'll probably see some folks on here today with denial statements and anti-Obama rhetoric.

He was buried at sea so there would not be a shrine to him available to the real haters in the world. President Obama did a great and courageous thing when he approved a raid into Pakistan. He did NOT work with Pakistan's government and that is why this was a success. Working with them is why he was missed so many times for so many years back to when President Clinton was trying to kill him. This is a great success for our nation and has been an ongoing operation since August of last year. It was not done for political reasons and it was not faked. (yes DNA can be done that quickly) If anyone of either party tries to use this as a "talking point" they are scum. It will not end the war but it is a good place to start. We can declare victory and bring our troops home now. Something I would like to see both sides of the aisle get busy accomplishing.

@holdoutWe can declare victory and bring our troops home now.

For: Inquiringminds:

Thanks for putting into words the very thing I've been thinking since hearing of this. Indeed! What "civilized" TRUE christian people or nation celebrates the assassination of another human being or human beings? Doesn't that make them no better than and far less humane than the 9/11 attackers?

For holdout:

Sadly, the troops CAN'T come home just yet. If you think the economy and unemployment are at an all time high now, along with homelessness, those problems would fly right off the chart if the troops started to return home enmasse. :(

@death_angel_30741 - of course Obama didn't pull the trigger. What president ever does? But it was his efforts and the efforts of our CIA and military that pulled this off. Even the naysayers cannot argue that. Bush couldn't do it in 7 years! And Obama pulls it off in less than 3??? Please give credit where credit is due.

It is sad that it has come to this - celebrating death - but a monster has been eliminated and I can't help but feel a weight has been lifted off America.

Yes We Can and Yes We Did!

I think President Obama should be commended for giving the order to bring Bin Laden to justice. Now, he should do everything in his power to bring the troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq with all deliberate speed. This saga will not be ended until that has been done.

May 2, 2011 at 9:38 a.m.

L4F, I stand corrected. Still saying nay nay nay. He is our Commander in Chief; no miltary operation can be executed without his say-so. No matter what he does, there will be those to take his achievements away from him. They criticize his toughness on terror, then snub him when the head of the snake has been brought to their feet.

BTW, why are you still writing blogs about BIRTHERISM??? This issue has been closed. He has released his Certificate of Live Birth with the doctor's signature. I suppose this is a forgery??? At least you are dedicated to your rhetoric.

Lib4, the operation could not and would not have been carried out without involving the Commander in Chief, which just so happens to be a black dude in the WHITE PEOPLE'S HOUSE and that's really what bothers you so.

Now, that said, unless America change its policies in that region there will always be another bin laden preparing to take the place of any fellow bin laden killed. We Americans are so eager to label our enemy the monster, but what is not being addressed are the equally monstrous policies and practices at the hands of U.S. and their allies in that region for decades that brought the likes of bin laden to power. There are MONSTERS all over and everywhere, many lurking in own backyard who help to breed and encourage budding potential terrorists by way of their own terroristic policies.

By the way: Odd? That picture tfp posted of a dead Bin Laden looks like over 99.9% of the Middle Easter male population over the age of 35.

Yet another Odd? There's been a RECENT regime change at the highest levels of the CIA and other cover operations in that region. GREAT TIMING?

I'm sure it has not escaped President Obama's attention that if they don't eventually produce the REAL photos of Bin Laden's dead body, he will once again be hounded by the ignorant masses who continue to believe in some type of conspiracy on his part to get re-elected. I don't know where these "concerned citizens" were in May, 2003 when Bush the Aviator landed on the USS Lincoln to declare "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" only to have the "MISSION" continue for the next 8 years?

The people of their time celebrated the death of Jesus Christ too. Centuries later, Jesus became a status a martyr. It should be of great concern that by assassinating Osama Bin Laden America has inadvertantly promoted him to a Christ like/martyrdom status in much of the Muslim world and elsewhere. Not everyone's celebrating Bin Laden's alleged assassination. That's for both Muslims and others alike.
