State trooper shot at on I-24 in Chattanooga

Someone fired a shot at a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper working on Interstate 24 near the Fourth Avenue exit Saturday night, according to a Chattanooga Police news release.

Trooper Gordon Roberts, 46, told investigators he was seated inside his car about 11:15 p.m. when he heard a loud bang, according to the release from Sgt. Jerri Weary, police spokeswoman.

Roberts looked up and saw his passenger window and front window had shattered, and he realized he’d been shot at. He pulled his vehicle forward to avoid being hit again and called for backup.

Chattanooga police investigators determined the round may have been fired from the area of East Lake Courts, Weary said.

Roberts wasn’t injured but was checked by medical personnel because of the amount of shattered glass.

Tennessee Highway Patrol spokeswoman Dalya Qualls said Roberts was conducting traffic control, sitting parked with his emergency lights flashing in the construction zone where crews are repairing the interstate.

Weary said the investigation is continuing and Qualls said the THP Criminal Investigations Division is assisting.

Is there any proof that someone actually fired a shot rather than some debris, a rock or some other object, could have just as well done the damage? Before anyone jumps to conclusion and innocent victims get caught up in the hysteria,be sure all the facts are in.

The title of the story should have the word "alleged" somewhere in there.

There is no crime problem in Chattanooga. There are no gangs, only flash mobs, these shootings we read about almost every other day should only read "Alleged". Chattanooga is touted to be in the top 4 most intelligent cities in the U.S. but also one of the most dangerous? Demoralize the CPD by trying to sell them off to the Sheriff for $1, freeze their pay, freeze hiring, take the cars away, take away overtime. There will be raises given this year but what you wont see is the cost of medical insurance will be increased (city will decrease the amount it pays to premiums), this will "appear" to make the city goverment look like they are helping the cops when they give a small raise, but in actuallity, it doesnt change the bottom line for the cops or the city budget. This administration has shown that if you need to cut budgets or instigate a "Pet Project", public safety is the first place and the criminals, drug dealers, gangs (yes there are gangs and they are connected to other cities)take notice.

Well....I'm sure they will find it because a friend and I were driving home from the Lookouts game and were just behind the cop car when it happened. Heard 3 shots and I asked my friend what was that. He said gunshots, happens here all the time. About that time the trooper pulled forward and I thought they were chasing someone down off the interstate on the road below. Saw the other cop come from the top of the ridgecut, but by the time he got there traffic was already moving ahead. Were ambulances down in the projects, so figured it was all related. Trust me, it happened. It kinda freaked me out hearing the shots, but now knowing it was directed at the cop car leaves me alittle leary about the construction traffic late at night being backed up with nowhere to escape around 4th.
