A day after a Chattanooga man was shot to death in an alley, police were on the hunt for suspects.

Police on Friday identified the man found dead in an alley behind Robbins Street and off Roanoke Avenue as Anthony White, 28.

According to police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary, witnesses told police that White was slain in a shoot-out between a group of men about 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Police found shells from multiple guns in the alley, Weary said.

White appeared to have been shot several times throughout his body, Weary said. No motives for the gunfight had been confirmed as of Friday night.

Police still are sifting through varying accounts of the incident.

"A lot of information has come through but has not been verified and police are still working to establish suspect leads. Some accounts say that two vehicles left the scene, but colors and descriptions of the vehicles vary," Weary explained.

White has an arrest record that stretches back to 2001 and includes more than 30 charges including aggravated assault, aggravated robbery and drug offenses.

In February, he pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine for resale and possession of drug paraphernalia from a 2009 arrest.

His four-year jail sentence was suspended, court records state.
