Cleveland, Bradley have vacant positions to fill

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Cleveland and Bradley County could have a new City Council and County Commission member, respectively, in a few days.

Both bodies have vacancies to fill until the 2012 elections.

The city vacancy was created by the death of Councilman Bill Robertson. Anyone interested in filling that position from the city's 5th District has until 1 p.m. Monday to submit an application to the mayor's office.

The council plans to meet Tuesday at 1 p.m. to vote on applicants, according to Mayor Tom Rowland.

The county needs to fill one of the two District 4 commission seats. Incumbent Howard Thompson resigned before pleading guilty recently to one charge of attempted theft after agents raided his flea market business.

Thompson's former colleague, Commissioner J. Adam Lowe, has been seeking applicants to fill that vacancy. While any commissioner can nominate a candidate, the commission traditionally has left that recommendation to a district's remaining representative, Lowe said.

The commission's Monday agenda includes the nomination and vote to fill the vacancy.
