Bradley County names educator Cliff Eason to commission vacancy

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Bradley County Commission on Monday appointed Cliff Eason to fill the District 4 vacancy created by the resignation of Howard Thompson.

Commission Chairman Louie Alford said Eason, who is principal of the Cleveland City School System's alternative school, the Teen Learning Center, likely will be sworn into office Monday during the commission's 7 p.m. meeting.

Eason was nominated by District 4's other commission member, J. Adam Lowe. There were no other candidates.

Also, seven people asked Monday to be considered to fill a Cleveland City Council vacancy created April 27 with the death of Councilman Bill Robertson.

The City Council meets today at 1 p.m. to interview the candidates for the District 5 seat.

The candidates include Hugh A. Hodges, Dale R. Hughes, Harry M. Johnson Sr., Jonathan C. Porter, Susan Shelton, Barry M. Sullivan Sr. and Deborah "Debbie" Williams.

Each candidate has been involved with local civic clubs, community events or government service for years.

Hodges was director of the Bradley County Juvenile Division from 1984-91, and Hughes is chairman of the Cleveland Utilities Board and a former educator. Johnson is a minister and served as executive director of Bradley/Cleveland Community Services Agency from 1978-2009.

Porter is a Bowater employee, owns a construction business and is a county volunteer firefighter.

Shelton published the Bradley News Weekly from 1991-2008. She now is employed with Cleveland City Schools' Maintenance and Transportation Department.

Sullivan has worked with several area radio stations, and Williams is active in Republican Party groups and was a member of an advisory group to Cleveland City Schools.
