3 ways to control gun violence, says Brady Campaign CEO

Gun violence can be better controlled with three steps, according to a national leader on the issue.

There need to be tougher gun laws, local law enforcement needs to be strengthened and there should be restrictions on civilian access to high-powered weapons with extended magazines, Paul Helmke, CEO of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said today at an event held at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Review the live coverage of this event here.

The Brady Campaign is a national effort named after James Brady, the assistant to the president and White House press secretary under Ronald Reagan. Brady was permanently disabled as a result of an assassination attempt on Reagan in 1981.

Helmke said 32 people are murdered with guns every day in the United States, the same number that was killed in 2007 when a gunman opened fire on the campus of Virginia Tech.

“Virginia Tech happens every day in this country,” Helmke said.

Helmke said he’s not adverse to legal gun ownership and gun violence is not a second amendment issue.

Chattanooga Police Chief Bobby Dodd was at the UTC event and listed figures on gun violence in the city so far this year: 10 homicides, 27 shootings with 32 victims and the average age of the person involved is 20 years old.

The police need to concentrate more on gang violence that is afterall what the majority of gun violence in Chattanooga comes from. From the sound of the news reports shutting down Tunnel Blvd wouldnt hurt either if not so impractical.

A ban on extended magazines is simply common sense, and would be a good start.

Once again...looking at the easy way out of trying to solve a problem that runs much deeper than just taking away our guns. Not one mention of tougher stricter penalties for first time and professional criminals. GET THE THUGS OFF THE STREETS AND THERE WONT BE A GUN CONTROL ISSUE! Stop letting them back out of the system in 4-8 years hoping that they're reformed once they hit the streets. Our justice system sux and is a laughing joke to the rest of the world. "Yes we know you were hammered and hit a lady crossing the street cause you were too drunk to see her, but here's a seven year jail sentence in which you might serve at most 505 of that and then we'll let you go after you've thought about what you've done and promise not to ever do it again" Open your eyes and address the real issues at hand and stop trying to rob me of my rights!!

These people and others like them are as bad as the Prohibitionists were. Always blaming something/someone for the end result but never blaming the cause. Their misguided concepts are almost laughable but for their sincerity. If we follow their logic (or lack of) then we must also ban cars, knives, many insects, boats, reptiles, and mammals because they also kill 1,000s of humans each year. AND while we are banning things that kill humans why do we not ban the number 1 killer of humans -- WAR. Or ban Cancer and other diseases, they definitely kill humans. Let us averageguns these deaths over the last 10 years. Car: 40023 Guns: 8237 Knives: 2573 Animals:
Bee/Wasp 53 Dogs 31 Spider 6.5 Rattlesnake 5.5 Mountain lion 1 Shark 1 Alligator 0.3 Bear 0.5 Scorpion 0.5 Centipede 0.5 Elephant 0.25 Wolf 0.1 Horse 20 Bull 3
Hurricanes: 233 War: 9545

Shall I go on? It seems that Cars and car manufactrurers should be number 1 on your list not guns and secondly should be WARS. Why do you not turn your money and energies towards something more constructive, like eliminating gangs or ignorance and bias being taught in the school system, or American Pride in OUR history.

But alas you take the easy way out.

Shame on you and those like you.

USSA is one day closer.

And while were at it we need to also put a ban on McDonalds, Taco Bell, Krystals for obesity....also one of the top killers in our nation today...And no, the extended magazine isnt a start. Although I am an avid hunter and gun owner, and i personally dont see the need for an extended magazine as i raised that if you cant drop with one shot you dont need to be shooting anyways. The start is addressing the real issue, not deflecting to the next thing that pops up to get the focus off of our lackluster approach to dealing with criminals.

What part of "Shall not be infringed" is not clear? This is all about control. The UN has a great track record of gun control in other countries...I choose to protect myself and my Family and the more rounds the better. Never had a problem with my Hi-Cap mags. When you need protection and have only seconds, cops are only minutes away.

“…law enforcement needs to be strengthened and there should be restrictions on civilian access to high-powered weapons with extended magazines…”

Why do the cops even need guns? The police seldom arrive in time to even arrest a suspect, much less use their guns. The cops initiate most cop/criminal encounters; while criminals initiate the criminal/victim encounters. Add to this the fact that the police have no duty to protect individuals.

Now, if the police actually need to be armed for a call: Doesn’t logic and reason indicate that if the police needed guns for the call . . . the VICTIMS the police were called for needed to be equally, if not MORE armed, than the police who will arrive with backups?

Non-cops have much more reason to be armed than law enforcement: Criminals go to some trouble to commit their crimes out of detection of law enforcement, while actually preying on non-cops. While the police seldom encounter the criminals in violent attacks: The victims ALWAYS encounter the criminals.

“The Brady Campaign is a national effort named after James Brady . . . ” isn’t that the guy who made millions of dollars, after he was shot in a “Gun Free Zone”, and since has made millions of dollars more every time someone else is murdered in “Gun Free Zones”?

No wonder the Brady Center push so hard to create more of those murder zone Cash Cows!

“Helmke said 32 people are murdered with guns every day in the United States, the same number that was killed in 2007 when a gunman opened fire on the campus of Virginia Tech.” Wow! Maybe we should pass a law making murder illegal. How well did Helmke’s idea of “the more helpless you are, when attacked with murderous intent, the safer you are” work for the victims of Virginia Tech? Where has the Brady scheme of “the more helpless you are, when attacked with murderous intent, the safer you are” been shown to save lives? Columbine? Luby’s? Fort Hood?

I see the FBI crime reports are out and across the country crime has dramatically dropped except Philly, New York, and San Antonio. All the criminologist cannot figure out why according to the CNN report. Nobody is willing to admit that OBAMA is the BEST Gun Salesman this country has ever known and in the 2+ years of his presidency, 10's of thousands of weapons have been sold to LAW ABIDING citizens willing to protect themselves and not count on NANNY GUBMENT to do so. Criminals are cowards and when they encounter a citizen with a gun, they tuck tail and run, if they are able to. Legal Gun Ownership is clearly the reason for lower crimes rates across the board, but nobody in the Gubment will admit it. They will not admit the highly restrictive gun laws in Philly, NY, and San Antonio are the reasons that all violent crimes are drastically up in these cities. It is so simple, yet Liberals are NOT willing to admit when they are wrong. What a shame.

Please read my first posts from the GA Gun Law Article from the 17th I think it was. Joy LUKYCHICK emailed me and told me the paper has published some corrections to her faulty reporting, but I don't see a corrected article anywhere.

What a garbage institution UT Chattanooga must be for letting this intellectually dishonest charade take place under the pretense of higher learning.

The Brady Whatever it calls itself these days formerly known as HANDGUN CONTROL INC. is a meaningless and irrelevant organization. They recently had their mailing list up for sale for a paltry $7500. Has beens.

These gun grabbers are funded by The Joyce Foundation, a Chicago based fund with deep ties to the Democratic party, B.O., and the "Violence Policy Center" a cover group focused on disarming all American of all types of firearms.

More disgraceful was Bobby Dodd. Was he on city time during this political action committee meeting for the Democratic party? He should turn in his firearm before it hurts someone, because an inanimate object is the focus of HANDGUN CONTROL INC. While he's at it, he can turn in his badge too. The local violence statistics prove he is inept. In almost every city where you have a anti-gun police chief, you have cops who lose gunfights because the funds for firearms training are a low priority. Police with adequate training will anticipate, engage, and win armed confrontations with bad guys.

Where was the opposing viewpoint? None? I'll give you one for free. The purpose behind firearm control is not safety, it is political control. Don't kid yourself. Egypt, Syria, Iran and Yemen could happen here. It did during Katrina. The socialists of the world want to tax you to poverty, seize your 401K, force you to buy things you don't want, and control you by controlling your access to health care. These gun control freaks are tyrants. Guns in civilian hands inoculate democracies from tyrants. Our founding fathers saw the same attitudes 300 years ago. There will always be gun grabbers because there will always be those who want unchallenged power, they want to consolidate power under socialism, they want to be god.

Your right to defend yourself is not a gift from your government, it is a God given right. Helmke, Dodd, and The Joyce Foundation can choose to be victims but they will not make that choice for you or me. I trust you with your handgun. You are my neighbor, my pizza delivery guy, my dentist, the person I shop next to at Publix deli with the Browning HiPower. You are my fellow American. I do not fear you, I respect you. Your decision to defend yourself makes all of us safer. 1 in 13 Tennessee adults has a carry permit. Where is all of the shootouts the anti-gunners predicted? Crime is dropping.
