Fire in the Belly

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

It is way too early for candidate selection although both parties are making decisions they think are most likely to gain them support in 2012 instead of seeking to do what is right for the country.

Does this 'toon indicate Bennett is a sexist or that Palin is a serious candidate with potential he is concerned about? I would lean toward labeling him a closet sexist since I don't think she is interested in being a candidate.

I personally hope there is a candidate we don't yet know about and that is not yet in the news. A strong independent with impeccable credentials willing to tell the RNC and DNC to stuff it would be a refreshing change.

Forget Sarah Palin: Obama Needs a Challenge from the Left.

So far, the Republican lineup of potential presidential candidates resembles the characters from the bar scene in Star Wars – a motley collection of far-right loons, freaks and conspiracy theorists.

The problem is that Obama needs to be held to account – but from a leftwing, not rightwing, direction. He has embraced and affirmed policies and a view utterly at odds with his 2008 presidential campaign, with its promises of "change", "reform" and a decisive break from criminal Bush-Cheney era.

Obama hasn't just neglected his base, he has abused it. The president's former chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, dismissed liberals who objected to Obama's healthcare bill as "effiing retarded"; Robert Gibbs, ridiculed the "professional left" and said liberal critics of the president "ought to be drug-tested". Obama himself has described Democrats opposed to his compromises on tax cuts as "sanctimonious".

An Associated Press poll found an astounding 47% of Democratic voters believed that Obama should be challenged from within the party for the 2012 nomination. My picks for candidates include Dennis Kucinich, Howard Dean, and Russ Feingold, None of them would win. But that’s not the point. It would be about holding Obama's feet to the fire.

The irony is that Obama, a self-styled conciliator and healer, has spent much of his presidency appeasing Republicans and capitulating to corporations and Wall Street. He has eschewed populism and allowed the Tea Party to surf public anger over bank bailouts and bonuses, job losses and home repossessions.

The question we should ask is whether Obama should only have to answer to the likes of Sarah Palin,………………or the even nuttier Michelle Bachmann.

Considering Palin’s recent press/media statements, I think Bennet is right about this, Harp3339. She claims she wants to put us all back on the right track:

"I think my problem is that I do have the fire in my belly," explained Palin of her own posture toward running 2012. "I am so adamantly supportive of the good, traditional things about America and our free enterprise system, and I want to make sure that America is put back on the right track.” [Sarah Palin]

As always, Alaska's former half-term Governor doesn’t provide any specific details for one to ponder so you have to fill in the blanks as to what she might consider to be the good, the traditional, the free enterprise system, and the right track. All Palin things considered, it’s highly probable it’s another mindless track to nowhere.

Conservatives, maybe you take a little breath and activate the part of your body which lies above your shoulder.

Since your great President Reagan, the american economy was mainly based on consumption, depending on buying things one does not need with money one does not have.

After the housing crash people realized that they cannot go on living on the equity of the house which lost half of its value. Thanks to the Republicans most jobs are outsourced to the east, so there is not way the jobnumbers go back to 2007-values.

This is simply not possible. Obama managed to stop the downfall last year. It would have been better to invest the stimulus only in infrustructure, but Republicans negotiated 350 billions in tax cuts, which proved to not never ...

... but there is no hope the conservatives would admit these facts, such as they negate science and keep believing in religious woodoo...

... dumb stays dumb.. thats the animal law, and I have no hope that they might evolve...

I saw ONE news clip on Sarah Palin yesterday. obama's embarrassing display over the last two days was all over every news program and talk radio show. It would have been GREAT cartoon material.

How is that change think working out for us? In the past two years with the participation of both highly compromised parties:

Crude oil from $43 a barrel to $99 and Gas from $1.87 to $3.77. Gold from $850 to $1350 due to currency values and inflation. Corn from $3.50 per bushel to $6.33 Soy beans from $9 to over $15 Sugar from $13 to $35 unemployment up from 7.6% to 9.4% with blacks from 12.6% to 15.8% Number of unemployed up from 11.6mm to 14.4 million Median income down from 50.1 to 49.7 Food stamp recipients up from 31.9mm to 43.2mm Unemployment recipients up to 9.2mm from 7.9mm Long term unemployed up to 6.4mm from 2.6mm Number in poverty level up to 43.6mm from 39.8mm U.S. rank in world economy down to 9th from 5th. National debt to 14.1 trillion from 10.6 trillion Number of federal employees up to 2,840,000 from 2,799,000.

It is a bi-partisan effort and a trend that can only end bad. Obama is in over his head and no viable candidate now on the scene can deal with the mess Clinton, Bush and Obama created. Obama has surrounded himself with people that aren't up to the job, he is getting bad advice and doesn't realize it.

Limric had it right at 6:58 - no liberal worth their salt would not admit that Obama has been a HUGE disappointment. His triangulating to the right, abandonment of his progressivist campaign rhetoric, continued warmaking, support for Holder's disgusting continuation of Bush's attacks on the heart of our Bill of Rights along with his appointment of the darlings of the plutocracy as financial advisors have all shown that the bloom is off the Democratic Party's rose as a banner-carrier for rank-and-file Americans. It is time for a new party to emerge and take up that role. They can no longer afford to vote for those who pander to them, take them for granted but will not work for their interests. All of the rancor and name-calling between the ideological "frontrunners" and the punditry are a convenient smokescreen for what many know is really going on in the mind of the electorate. No one really cares which of the Rethugs emerges as a candidate. They're toast. The important question is whether there will emerge a critically needed populist revolutionary on the left. An energized socialist party could provide the answer.

mntl asked; do you actually have some strong independent person with impeccable credentials in mind for the 2012 presidential race or is this just some kind of desperate wishful thinking on your part?

Wishful thinking I must admit. Anyone with the KSA to do what must be done is too smart to go into a snake pit full of rattle snakes.

Sandy, You are right education does need to be on the list as indicated by my use of a hyphen in bipartisan which I can't defend or explain. Also, the fact that 75% of high school seniors poled did not know who the first president of the United States was is another clue that it isn't a funding problem.

The accuracy of all those items listed, and there are others, can be verified by government agencies. What I see in most postings here is how one party is good and the other is bad when actually they both suck equally. They are both compromised and controlled by a small power group in each house. It appears the longer one of either party is in office the more compromised they become. Term limits would be appropriate.

Can you identify any action items by either party to effectively address the trends in most of the economic indicators?

It is a bit early to be looking for a front runner in the Republican party. At this time 4 years ago Barrack H, Obama was a virtual unknown until the liberal media became completely mesmerized by him.He was given a complete pass by the liberal media with no stories about his friendships with very radical people.Completely ignored it.They turned on their darling Ms. Clinton.Whomever emerges as the Republican nomination will have to have a very thick skin because they will have to run against Obama and the liberal media. They will go after him/her with everything they can and if they can't find anything they will go after their families. The way the liberal media has gone after the families of the republican party in the past is really disgusting. I can only hope that whoever emerges as the leader can keep the focus(of the press) on the problems this country faces and their plans to fix them.Unfortunately the liberal press historically creates huge propaganda falsehoods against the conservative runner and runs with them day and night until they are proven false. Then they create another and run with it and so on,and so on.The true journalists of the fifties and sixties would turn over in their collective graves if they were able to see the disgusting way stories are slanted in todays media. There is very little objective journalism in todays media and it is ruining this country.Unfortunately too many people listen to a news outlet and just believe what they hear because at one time you could actually do that.News would be reported straight up and the listener could make up their own mind.No more, the news is almost always slanted and a smart person has to watch several outlets to get to the real story.Fortunately there is finally one conservative outlet that offsets the multitude of liberal outlets and the liberals absolutely hate it!They cannot completely brainwash the masses anymore.

When are we going to stop acting as if any irrational delusion is worthy of respect just because it is labeled as 'religion'? These ideas are not harmless, not when they lead to murder, not when they dampen our outrage over the horrors of war, not when they justify bigotry, not when they are used to deny women access to health care, not when they stymie life-saving medical research, and not when they are used to interfere with providing education to our children based on reason rather than fairy tales. Personally, I have reached the end of my ability to pretend that irrationality is deserving of respect simply because a large number of people happen to believe it. Most of these people are deserving of respect, but the belief itself is not. Let's see how these rapture-heads manage to back-pedal tomorrow to explain why they're still here with us 'godless heathens'. (I would laugh, but it's really too disturbing.)

"If there is a sin against life, it consists perhaps not so much in despairing of life as in hoping for another life and in eluding the implacable grandeur of this life." - Albert Camus, 1942

"It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine." - REM

Limric, great 6:58am post!

Woody, I'm rapidly coming to much the same conclusion (another reason for my absence this week).

Very good post and thoughtful question, Canarysong. Wish I had the answer, but I don’t. Irrational delusions have always been a part of human history, of course, but it seems to me things really started going berserk around the time some of our supreme court justices proclaimed corporations were persons – another irrational delusion.

canarysong,

good post on the nut case. Another woman in Florida is being tried for killing her child and if convicted could be on death row which is the right place for her and this nut. Surely she can't plead insanity. I question the phrase "not guilty due to insanity" when it should be guilty and crazy as hell. I don't blame religion, the mental imbalance had to be there already to get that screwed up.

I agree corporations aren't persons, unions aren't persons, special interest groups such as AARP and others are not persons, actually PACs are not persons. A person is one human being with a single identity. Contributions to a campaign committee should be from an identified individual legal citizens confirming they gave of their own free will and did not receive any funds from other sources to enable or encourage them to contribute.

That is dreaming, neither party would ever stand for that. Every time anyone introduces campaign financing regs it is full of loop holes similar to the tax codes.

If the candidate does not make sea monkey happy (extremist) the candidate will NEVER get the GOPher nomination.

A moderate GOPher will not get the nomination. Newt makes an intelligent comment from the middle and he is slammed by the extreme RIGHT for his comment.

Only EXTREMIST need apply for the GOPher nomination!

A strong independent with impeccable credentials."

Indeed, this is an issue I think could elect the Independent presidential candidate you've been longing for, Harp3339. But I don’t think it’s a candidate you would support in the end. Although you seem to recognize corporations are not people, its clear from some of the things you've said in earlier posts that you believe the corporate way is the only true path for America. And, of course, people, rights, and profits simply don't always mesh, Harp3339. There needs to be a balance to maintain the spirit in which this country was founded - something the corporate mindset doesn't appear to comprehend. Their sole mission is to make profits. . . and the sick, the poor, and the mentally ill are not profit making ventures. In the world of corporate America, the rest of us are simply the chimps, the losers, the parasites, and as you said to Canarysong earlier, the nut cases – all to be used and manipulated to make a profit.

rights, people and profits always mesh if the government would quit intervening and disrupting competition instead of assuring there is adequate competition on a level playing field. They have screwed up health care with their negotiated medicare rates and other intervention so much it may be beyond repair. Competition will control profits on essential items such as food, clothing and shelter. Utilities that operate as monopolies are highly regulated which is as it should be. There is no need for concern if an item is discretionary, the whole world doesn't need an I-phone.

Do you buy American made products so more Americans become employed or do you primarily buy imports where the producers may be more profitable than an American producer? And, the profits on imports go back to the producing company.

Do you think Ford, GM, Chrysler, Caterpillar, John Deere, Alston, General Mills, Kellogg, Kraft, P&G, Lever Brothers, plus many others like them are too profitable and bad for America and American workers? At what % ROI do you consider profits to be excessive? Is Exxon's current 7 cents profits per gallon too much? Is the governments 48 cents tax revenue per gallon too much?

Any idea why so many are requesting and getting waivers from Obama care? Nancy Pelosi who said we will have to pass the bill to know what is in it must have finally figured it out, 20% of the waivers are to her district. Harry Reid got a waiver for the state of Nevada, the teachers union requested and was granted a waiver. Several other unions have been given a waiver. If it is so great and won't cost others anything why are these people not willing to participate?

Transparency we were promised. It is not possible to know who has requested and been denied a waver, no one seems to know who it is that is granting the waivers or if congress is influencing who is to get a waiver. Perhaps it is just coincidence that Pelosi and Reid's constituents were granted waivers? Trust the government to manage health care and I promise the day will come you regret it. UNLESS you are among the favored few. I don't have the ability to get a waiver so I just bend over and get kicked again while you and others from your safe haven tell me how great it is that we have a bloated, over staffed incompetent federal government that is administering welfare.

Seamonkey, I caught some video (11 Alive) of your candidate in Atlanta. Out of the couple of hundred (if that many) people there, I saw maybe 3 African Americans! I thought, from your description, that you were at some "movement of the people." It looked like an estate sale crowd. Eric Rudolph didn't bomb at Centennial Park as bad as this puffed up lackey. Did you really spend that much gasoline to see such a yawner of an event? I hope you went to the High or something, so the day wasn't an entire flop.
