Georgia Northwestern Technical College is going through a “reduction in force,” according to a spokeswoman for the school.
The spokeswoman would not give any more details, deferring questions to college President Craig McDaniel, who was not immediately available.
The college has campuses in Walker, Gordon, Floyd and Polk counties, with plans to open facilities in Whitfield, Murray and Catoosa.
McDaniel previously had warned that the school would lose $1.3 million in federal stimulus money this year. In 2009, McDaniel told the Times Free Press that much of the stimulus funding was paying salaries and if the economy didn’t improve before 2011, the state’s technical colleges would face a “crisis situation.”
In 2010, Northwestern Tech had 2,894 students in Walker County, 2,597 in Floyd County, 903 in Gordon County and 308 in Polk County, records show.
The announcement rides on the heels of a national manufacturing summit in Dalton last week at which state, federal and business leaders highlighted the contributions technical colleges make to North Georgia’s workforce. The speakers, however, also lamented the cuts in state and federal funding to the technical college system.
In 2009, workers at Northwestern Tech were forced to take furlough days. That year, the college cut more than $920,000 from its $13 million budget.
