Morris indicted in UTC dorm break-ins

The man suspected of breaking into and planting cameras UTC dorm rooms has been indicted on 13 counts, court records show.

A Hamilton County grand jury has returned indictments against Bernard Morris, 23, on eight counts of aggravated burglary, one count each of aggravated criminal trespassing, arson and burglary, and two counts of theft of property, according to the court clerk’s office.

The grand jury, which was given evidence in the case in March, declined to charged Morris on four counts of aggravated burglary of an occupied habitation, records show.

Morris was a UTC student and resident assistant in a UTC dorm when he was arrested by University of Tennessee at Chattanooga police in March. He was accused of breaking into and planting surveillance equipment in three campus apartments in Guerry and in the Stophel buildings.

Since 2006, he has pleaded guilty to felony counts of aggravated burglary and arson, misdemeanor counts of harassment and stalking. All the charges — which cover three different cases — involved young girls, according to newspaper archives.

Since at least 2004, there have been multiple reports of Morris harassing young women and for burning at least one home, according to newspaper archives.

Responding to the recent incidents, Tennessee lawmakers this year passed legislation requiring that people seeking jobs at student housing pass criminal background checks.
