Monday, May 30, 2011

WINCHESTER, Tenn.- A man trapped in a Franklin County cave for more than 24 hours has been rescued, authorities said.

About 8:15 p.m. tonight, a dispatcher at the Franklin County Sheriff's Office said the man was pulled from the cave sometime within the last hour. He was then taken to Erlanger hospital, she said.

Earlier in the day, Franklin County Sgt. Chris Guess told WRCB-TV that the 51-year-old Huntsville, Ala., man fell into the cave on Sunday afternoon and has broken bones and injuries to his back, pelvis and wrist.

Guess said crews worked throughout the night to get the man from the cave. Guess said the man, whose name was not immediately released, was about 2,000 feet underground when the injuries occurred.

Sheriff Tim Fuller said the cave's opening is very low and narrow. Crews were cutting through rock to try to reach the man.
