University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball assistant Amy Herrington-Woodard was promoted to associate head coach in a move announced Thursday by head coach Frank Reed. In her first season at UTC, Herrington-Woodard helped the 2011 Lady Mocs had a program-best winning percentage and the nation's best batting average. UTC won the Southern Conference regular season and tournament championships and advanced to an NCAA region final for the first time in school history before falling to Alabama. Before coming to UTC, Herrington-Woodard spent three seasons as head coach at Appalachian State.
Volleyball
• Piedmont College junior Paige Eslinger from Ringgold was voted the Great South Atlantic Conference volleyball libero of the year for the second time as the league all-stars were announced Thursday, and she was joined on the all-conference team by Covenant's Erica Adams, Jessie Jakes and Kristin Dahlstran. Maryville's Kristin Findley repeated as player of the year. Eslinger led the GSAC with 6.27 digs per set, and Adams led in block average with 41 solos and 62 block assists. She and Jakes totaled 350 and 299 kills (3.54 and 3.08 per game), and Jakes also was second for Covenant with 314 digs while Dahlstrand was second in the league in assist average with 9.84 per game and added 252 digs.
• TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Talladega College defeated Tennessee Temple 25-13, 25-11, 25-10 in volleyball Thursday. Annie London had 11 digs for Temple (12-21).
Soccer
• Covenant's Matt Hudnut and Tyler Morrison made the men's soccer All-GSAC team and teammates Hunter Harrison and Ian Meredith earned all-freshman honors, while Covenant's Teagan Wood was the women's freshman of the year and Margaret Cross and Dana Streufert were all-conference selections. The Lady Scots' Hannah Bales joined Wood on the women's all-freshman team. Longtime Maryville College coach Pepe Fernandez, a former Tennessee Wesleyan star and Hixson and Notre Dame high school coach, was the GSAC men's coach of the year.
• King College senior Morgan Shelton from Ooltewah High School was a first-team All-Conference Carolinas women's soccer selection for 2011, and fellow King senior Heidi Steger from Ooltewah was a third-team pick. Shelton led the Lady Tornado with 14 goals in 15 games and also with five assists, and she had multiple goals four times.
Basketball
• Freshman Randy Boyd from Hixson scored 24 points and Fernando Limus Jr. added 17 as Georgia Northwestern Technical College began its men's basketball season Thursday night with a 67-64 win over four-year Hiwassee College at the Rossville Athletic Complex. Boyd scored the final go-ahead three-point play from a Matt Woods assist with 43 seconds to go, and Alex Miller had 12 rebounds.
• LEBANON, Tenn. -- NAIA Division I member Cumberland University ran its men's basketball record to 3-0 for the season with a 70-48 win over visiting Bryan College from NAIA Division II on Thursday. Michael Sweat scored 18 points for the Bulldogs; Dion Fair and Rob Riley led Bryan (0-2) with 12 and 11, while Carrin Nash had 11 rebounds.
