The Red Bank Police Department will be the first law enforcement agency in the country to send its detectives out on the streets in two locally made Volkswagen Passats.
Red Bank City Commission unanimously voted Tuesday night to approve the purchase of two Passats, which will cost $21,278 apiece.
Volkswagen director of communications Carsten Krebs said Red Bank is the first municipality in the nation to buy the cars.
“It’s a great day, and we’re very happy that the city of Red Bank wrote history tonight,” Crebs said.

Police cars paid for by issuing bogus traffic tickets without identifying those actual persons committing a crime in violation of the 6th Amendment to the United States Constitution. Somewhere in hell, a goose-stepping, jack-booted thug is smiling.
Brain trust of Red Bank, enjoy your new cars paid for by your neighbors at the cost of a piece of their freedom. May these American made VW police cars also make history by absorbing the most energy of impact ever withstood by a mid size car in an offset frontal crash with an elected official in the front seat, preferably at a Red Bank ticket camera intersection.
On second thought, have you considered a few Toyotas?
I am NOT going to help pay for these cars. I am going to stop for red lights and obey the speed limit. That'll show em.
