Heavy rains over the weekend resulted in traffic congestion and accidents throughout the Chattanooga area this morning.

Officials also reported that some low-lying roads had been flooded, requiring motorists to find alternate routes.

The rain was expected to continue with clearing and cooler temperatures later this week.

Catoosa schools alter schedules due to flooding

Catoosa County Schools will alter schedules today and Tuesday because of continued flooding concerns.

Students who ride buses will be dismissed at regular times today. But students who drive themselves will be dismissed at 2:45 p.m.

All schools will open with a two-hour delay Tuesday morning.

Four roads closed in Dade, none in Walker

Emergency officials in Dade County say a few roads are closed thanks to big rains, while Walker County officials say all roads there remain open for now.

Dade County dispatchers say high water has closed Sells Lane, Hunt Creek Road at the New England Road intersection, Creek Road at Burkhalter Gap Road, Mason Road at Old Cloverdale Road, and Ballard Road at Tram Road on Sand Mountain.

Murphy's Hollow Road is under a small amount of water but remains passable, and Slygo Road at Hale's Gap Road has one lane underwater but is passable, officials said.

Walker County officials, meanwhile, say all roads remain open for now.

The heavy rain has not affected public school schedules yet, officials said.

Sequatchie Valley endures rain with few problems, so far

A Marion County dispatcher says persistent heavy rains left the usual roads under water in low-lying areas near the Sequatchie River, but officials up and down the Sequatchie Valley said most problems are minor for the time being.

The Marion dispatcher said water was running over River Mill, Ketner's Mill Lane and Condra's Switch at 8 a.m. CST.

Those are the roads that normally flood in heavy rain, she said.

In Bledsoe and Sequatchie counties to the north, dispatchers said there were a few roads under water but that all were still reported passable.

"The river's out of its banks but it's not over the road," the dispatcher at the Sequatchie County Justice Center said early Monday.

Bledsoe County's dispatcher said people were reporting high water as they awoke on Monday, but nothing was too bad.

"We don't have any [roads] closed, no mudslides and we're going to school," she said.

State officials have been checking state Highway 30 on each side of the county and in the state Highway 101 area near the state prison, she said.

High water reported in McMinn, Meigs

Officials in McMinn and Meigs counties say high water has closed several roads, mostly the ones people expect to see flooded during heavy rains.

In McMinn, a dispatcher said the only road closed at 11 a.m. is Mayfield Lane in Athens near the milk plant.

Water is reported on County Road 87, County Road 713 and County Road 370, the McMinn dispatcher said.

State Department of Transportation officials visited state Highway 305 but found that high water there had receded, the dispatcher said.

But high water has closed four roads in Meigs, officials said.

Closures at 11 a.m. include Ten Mile Road, Mitchell Road, Womac Hollow Road and Big Sewee Road, the dispatcher said.

Meanwhile, heavy rains have had no impact on school schedules, officials said.

Whitfield roads remain clear, Catoosa reports high water, one road closure

Officials in Whitfield County say there are no road closures from heavy rains, but in Catoosa, officials say one road in Ringgold is closed and nine or 10 others are underwater but passable.

Nashville Street in Ringgold is closed at the train trestle, according to Catoosa officials.

High water has been reported on Steele Road at Mack Smith Road, Lakeview Road and South Lake Terrace, Old Mill Road at the water company, the 700 block of Wooten Road at the bridge, the 400 block of Poplar Springs Road at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, South Cedar Lane at Angel EMS' old station, East Lakeview Drive at State Line Road, F.O. Patterson Avenue behind Capital Bank, and Cross Street at Lakeview Middle School, according to emergency officials.

In Whitfield, officials said high water has been reported on Martin Luther King Boulevard near Roan Street School and on Walnut Avenue in front of the mall.

Officials in both counties noted that the heavy rain has had no impact on schools so far.
