Shooting guard commits to UTC

Murray Smith of Summit Christian School in West Palm Beach, Fla., has coached his share of good basketball shooters, including former North Carolina player Jackie Manuel.

But Farad Cobb is the best, Smith says.

Cobb has committed to play for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga beginning next fall.

"He had 115 3s last year, and he's the best shooter I've ever had," Smith said. "He had one game where he started 8-for-8 from the 3-point line to start the game. I'd never seen eight in a row go in."

Cobb chose to play at UTC instead of at Central Florida, Murray State and the College of Charleston.

"I was walking around the arena and it felt like home and felt like I was supposed to be there," Cobb said. "It was a difficult decision. After the travel circuit, I didn't have UTC at the top of my list."

Cobb is 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds and averaged about 22 points, four rebounds and four assists per game last year. An ESPN.com recruiting service grades him at an 86 and with two stars out of five, and the 21st best player in Florida.

"He's got a really good feel for the game, and he knows what he's doing and he knows how to play," Smith said of the Palm Beach County player of the year. "I think Chattanooga is a good fit. I do think he can play at a higher level because of his ability to shoot. But at that level, he'll be tremendous."

Cobb made his recruiting visit to UTC on the same weekend as post player Joshua Warren from Marietta, Ga., who also committed to the Mocs. Both said they became quick friends.

"It seemed like I knew him for the longest time," Cobb said. "It was a factor because I'd like to know that I'll have a good friendship with somebody in the same class as me."
