All of us who love Chattanooga like to hear good things about the city. So it is gratifying that our downtown has turned up on a list of the best downtowns in the United States.

The editors of the online publication Livability.com picked Chattanooga as No. 8 for its list of the 10 most livable downtowns. That raises the question of who the others are.

Well, Indianapolis was No. 1. Winston-Salem, N.C., was No. 2. Burlington, Vt., was No. 3. San Antonio, Texas, was No. 4. Savannah, Ga., was No. 5. Then came Louisville, Ky., at No. 6 and Fort Worth, Texas, at 7.

Following Chattanooga were Eugene, Ore., at No. 9, and Franklin, Tenn., at No. 10.

Chattanooga's pleasant and economically important downtown public and private developments include the Tennessee Aquarium, pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly riverfront trails, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Unum and a range of appealing restaurants, parks, arts venues and other attractions.

This latest recognition and others the city has received in recent months and years -- plus big economic investments such as the Volkswagen plant -- make it clear Chattanooga is a hot commodity on the national and international scene.

Local officials as well as private citizens should do everything possible to maximize the benefit to our city of all that positive attention.
