Pancake second in Tar Heel event

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Eighth-ranked Alabama finished second to No. 9 LSU in the Tar Heel Invitational women's golf tournament that ended Sunday, and the Crimson Tide's Brooke Pancake from Chattanooga tied for second individually with a 54-hole score of 208, one behind the medalist. Tennessee and Georgia shared sixth place in the 18-team field at 870, 14 behind LSU, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was 16th at 897. Jordan Britt led the Mocs with a 221, tied for 34th, with Mette Kryger at 222 and Marion Duvernay at 225.

• MACON, Ga. -- UTC's Stephan Jaeger wound up fourth individually with a 210 and the Mocs were sixth with a three-day 885 in the 15-team Brickyard Collegiate Classic golf tournament Sunday. Jaeger was one of only three players not from team champion Georgia Tech or Florida State in the top 11. He and teammate Steven Fox closed with 69s, Fox tying for 20th at 219, and Chris Robb and Benni Weilguni posted 230s.

• BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Lee University women's golf team recorded a school-record 289 on Sunday in the first round of the BSC Southern Shootout hosted by Birmingham Southern College. Geandra Almeida shot an even-par 70 at the Highland Park Golf Club for the Lady Flames and she is tied for the individual lead with Shorter's Lisa Persson. Lee's Kristin Bourg is one shot back with a 71.

VOLLEYBALL

• The UTC volleyball team followed up its five-set Southern Conference victory Saturday night against UNC Greensboro with a 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21) victory home win Sunday against Elon. Sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Kuroski had a career-high 24 kills to lead UTC in the victory. "I give our credit to all our student-athletes. They bought in this week knowing that we had to work really hard to get better," UTC coach Travis Filar said. "They showed it this weekend." Christina Teter had 11 kills, and Heather Parman and Kasey Talley each had nine kills. Setter Bridget Camacho had her fifth career double-double with 43 assists and 13 digs, and junior libero Paula Passmore had 27 digs for the Mocs.

• SAN ANTONIO -- After falling 25-19, 24-26, 25-22, 25-16 to the University of Dallas and 25-19, 25-11, 25-18 to Southwestern on Saturday in the SCAC East-West Divisional volleyball tournament, Sewanee lost 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-16) to host Trinity University and 3-1 (25-14, 25-19, 11-25, 25-15) Austin College on Sunday. Jamie Sue Wilson registered 17 kills and three blocks and Rachel Schuman had 32 assists and 18 digs against Dallas, and Wilson added 10 kills, Schuman had 25 assists and Kayla Sewell made 17 digs against Southwestern. Sunday, Wilson had 11 kills and 16 digs against Austin, and Schuman had 27 assists.

SOCCER

• SHERMAN, Texas -- The Sewanee soccer teams earned a hart-fought split in an SCAC doubleheader Sunday at Austin College, getting a 3-2 win in the women's game and falling 1-0 in double overtime in the men's. Sewanee jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the women's game with two goals by Jamie Samociuk and a goal by Bess Goodman. Austin College scored twice late in the match, but freshman goalkeeper Megan Poole made four saves to preserve the win.

FIELD HOCKEY

• SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Sewanee lost 2-1 to visiting Roanoke in NCAA Division III field hockey Sunday. After falling behind 1-0 late in the first half, the Tigers tied the game on a goal by senior Elise Landau in the 44th minute. But Abby Bjork scored her second goal of the game seven minutes later to get the win for Roanoke.

ROWING

• Chattanooga Junior Rowing took four first place finishes over the weekend in the Chattanooga Head Race. Ruthie Hopkins and Hayley Sawyer won the women's junior double, and Iain Nash, Quinn Nash, Connor Nash and David May won the Men's junior quad. In women's junior quad, Anna Youngblood, Andi Cabrera, Cat Cabrera and Arianna Azcona won, and Matt Kneidler won men's novice single. Chattanooga Juniors also had three second-place finishes, a third place finish and four fourth place finishes.

SOFTBALL

• Chattanooga State came away with a 5-0 exhibition win over UTC on Saturday in the final game of the Lady Mocs RBI Club Classic at Frost Stadium. Ashley Czechner pitched a complete-game one-hitter while striking out nine to get the win. Kortney Koroll scored the first run on and error, and Lacye Walker and Czechner each had two-run home runs for the Lady Tigers. UTC picked up its only hit in the seventh inning when Michelle Fuzzard hit a two out single.
