UTC's Nurick falls in USTA tennis

After two qualifying wins and a 6-3, 6-4 victory Saturday over Louisville's Mandy Brown, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Jenna Nurik lost to Purdue's Jennifer Rabot, 6-0, 6-2, in the USTA/ITA Regional tennis tournament Sunday in Memphis.

Nurik was the only UTC singles player remaining in the main draw.

She and Lady Mocs freshman Kaylene Chadwell lost 8-2 to Kentucky's Jessica Stiles and Khristina Blajkevitch in the doubles main draw. They beat duos from Eastern Kentucky and Ohio University on Saturday, when UTC's Shaina Singh and Alexa Flynn lost 8-4 to a Purdue pair but won 8-3 over an IUPUI tandem in the back draw. Singh and Flynn defeated the UT-Martin team of Anna Marie Herbold and Johanie Van Zyl in the doubles back draw Sunday. Singh and Flynn also had singles wins on Sunday in the back draw.

At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Lady Mocs senior Emily Hangstefer won the Flight 9 singles title Saturday in the Roberta Alison Fall Classic with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 defeat of Samford's Ann Marie Lyon. Samford's Katie Stanford beat UTC's Briana Wishing 7-6(2), 6-1 in the Flight 10 final, and Hangstefer and Wishing lost to a UAB duo in Flight 5 doubles.
