Single gunshot killed man

A man killed in a barrage of gunfire that wounded four others Sunday night died from a single gunshot wound to the head, according to a medical examiner's report.

VanDaryl Rivers, 22, was shot once in the right temple, according to the Hamilton County Medical Examiner's Office.

Rivers was one of several people gathered near the 1900 block of Walker Street about 10 p.m. when witnesses said a man clad in black opened fire on the group with an assault rifle.

Among those shot were 19-year-old JerMichael Smith, who was shot in the neck, and 25-year-old Daniel Smiley, who was shot in the wrist. A 17-year-old and 2-year-old were grazed by bullets.

Chattanooga police had released no suspect information or motive as of Thursday.

Assault includes phone attack

Chattanooga police are searching for a man accused of trying to make his girlfriend eat her cell phone.

Victor Morris Jackson, 52, is wanted on a domestic aggravated assault charge, according to Chattanooga police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary. She said he held a knife against his girlfriend, punched her, threatened to kill her and demanded that she eat her cell phone after he forced it into her mouth.

Weary said Jackson is often in Hixson and Brainerd, and she asked that anyone who knows where Jackson is call Chattanooga police at 423-698-2525.

Man charged in fatal wreck

A man has been charged in a car accident last month that killed a woman.

Vickie Pippin was driving north on Hixson Pike when her car collided with the car of 22-year-old Milton Guin, who Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Janice Atkinson says was drunk and using his cellphone when he crossed all of the southbound lanes and the turning lane to head south on the northbound lanes.

Pippin, 39, died the next day.

The Hamilton County grand jury indicted Guin, on charges of vehicular homicide by intoxication, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, unlawful use of hand-held telephone while driving, violation of traffic-control device and driving under the influence.

This was Guin's second DUI charge.
