Delvin Dewayne Williams, 31, faces charges after he dragged a police officer behind his car while the officer was attempting to arrest him for driving under the influence.

Dalton police are searching for a man who dragged a police officer behind his car while the officer was attempting to arrest him for driving under the influence.

Delvin Dewayne Williams, 31, faces charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving, failure to yield when entering a roadway, simple battery against a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer and felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, according to a news release.

Around 2:15 a.m. Saturday, Officer Steven Collins pulled over Williams after he saw Williams nearly cause a collision on Chattanooga Road, according to a news release. Williams pulled his gold-colored Lincoln Continental into the parking lot of the RaceTrac service station at the corner of Shugart Road and Highway 41.

Collins performed several sobriety tests on Williams, including a breathalyzer test. Williams' breath registered at 0.23, almost four times the legal 0.08 limit, the release said.

When Collins attempted to take Williams into custody, Williams broke free and ran to his car, the release said. Collins managed to get into the driver's-side door of Williams car while trying to pull him out of the car.

Williams started the car and began to accelerate sharply, the release said, dragging Collins from the door and throwing him from the car.

Williams is black, about 5 foot 10 and weighs about 165 pounds.
