Crime on Tennessee college campus increases slightly in 2011, TBI says

There was a slight increase of crime statewide on Tennessee's campuses in 2011 after a decrease in reported offenses for 2010, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

There were 7,493 offenses reported in 2011 compared with 7,190 in 2010, a 4.2 percent increase overall, according to the TBI report "Crime on Campus 2011." Violent crime was also up nearly 20 percent for the second year in a row, the report said.

From area schools, the University of the South has the highest larceny rates at 18.8 incidents per 1,000 students. Its assault and burglary rates are also higher than other schools, at 6.4 and 17.3, respectively.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga had a larceny rate of 12.3 incidents per 1,000 students.
