Chattanooga area high school standouts of April 3

  • Nick Shrum, Grundy County: He pitched an eight-inning three-hitter with 13 strikeouts and did not allow an earned run as the Yellow Jackets edged Chattanooga Christian 2-1 in a District 7-AA baseball game.

  • Jesse Owens, Whitwell: He pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts as the Tigers won 5-1 over Marion County in District 6-A baseball.

  • Carter Flowers, Polk County: In the Wildcats' 20-3 five-inning District 5-AA win over Sweetwater, he threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and also tripled, doubled and had three RBIs.

  • Jake Leffew, Soddy-Daisy: In addition to going 3-for-4 when the Trojans beat Rhea County 6-2 in a District 5-AAA game, he totaled 10 strikeouts and finished his three-hitter with six consecutive scoreless innings.

  • Zach Thompson, Ooltewah: He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and struck out 11 batters while raising his pitching record to 3-0 in the Owls' 9-3 District 5-AAA win at Cleveland.

  • Matt Allen, South Pittsburg: He tripled and doubled and drove in three runs in the Pirates' 9-0 district win over Sale Creek.

  • Erica O'Kane, Marion County: She tripled twice among her three hits and drove in three runs in the Lady Warriors' 13-3 six-inning District 6-A softball victory over South Pittsburg.

  • Sydney Sloan, Polk County: She was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs in a 12-1 win at Loudon.

  • Sadie Shackelford, St. Andrew's-Sewanee: Although her tennis team lost a Division II-A East/Middle Region match 4-3 to University School of Nashville, she won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and teamed with her sister, Michaela, to win 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.
