University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Stephan Jaeger was the Southern Conference men's golfer of the month for March, and UTC junior Manuel Barroetavena was the men's tennis player of the month. Jaeger, a former Baylor School standout who was the SoCon golfer of the year the last two seasons, finished third at 6-under-par 210 in a loaded field in the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga. In the Collegiate Match Play he beat 10th-ranked Max Homa of California and halved with No. 11 Taylor Gooch in the Mocs' win over Oklahoma State. A Ben Hogan Award candidate, he is ranked No. 25 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Barroetavena, who's from Argentina, went 9-0 in singles during March, losing only one set, and in the process moved up from the Mocs' No. 4 position to No. 2. He was 6-3 in doubles matches.
• Middle Tennessee State senior Hunter Green from Rhea County was the Sun Belt Conference men's golfer of the month for March. He previously was honored for September. Thirteen of his 20 rounds this year have been under par, and six were in the 60s, including a final-round 66 in his Argent Financial Classic victory last month. He is third all-time in MTSU tournament triumphs. "He goes up against some very tough fields every week," coach Whit Turnbow said, "and to perform at that level says a lot about his game and his mental toughness." Green tied for 14th at 143 as the Blue Raiders tied for sixth in the 16-team BancorpSouth Intercollegiate tournament Monday and Tuesday at Madison, Miss.
• Led by medalist Hudson Keener from Dalton with a 36-hole 146 at Lookout Mountain Golf Club, LaGrange College won the 2012 Spring Reeder Cup with a 616, 15 shots better than second-place Mobile. Host Covenant was third at 633 with Trey Patterson, Alex Mosteller and Cameron Lewis fourth, fifth and tied for seventh at 155, 156 and 159. Sewanee was fifth at 658 with Saer Brown tying for ninth at 160. Keener's brother Hunter and LaGrange teammate Victor Choi also were in the group of five at 160. Mobile's Zach Day was second at 153, one shot better than LaGrange's Cory Howard.
• Tennessee Wesleyan's Josh Wheeler was seventh at 144 and Michael Alread tied for 10th at 146 as the Bulldogs finished third behind Coastal Georgia and Union (Ky.) in Reinhardt's invitational golf tournament Tuesday. Playing as an individual, TWC's Tyler Hughes also shot 146. Bryan was fifth with Braden Baugh (149), Kris Brett (149), Ian Long (150) and Adam Forgey (150) in the top 20. Bryan had two players in the women's tourney won by Wesleyan, and Audrey Nelson was first at 163 with TWC's Alexis Spalding second at 167 and Stephanie Carr fourth at 170.
• Lee University men's soccer coach Paul Furey recently announced the first three signees for his 2012 class: center back Gabe Franco from Mooresville, N.C.; outside midfielder/wing Anthony Brayer from Franklin, Tenn., and Independence High School; and outside defender Jonathan Perelman from Class AAA state champion Hardin Valley Academy in Knoxville. Franco helped lead Lake Norman High to two state quarterfinal appearances and was all-region, and he has played for the highly regarded North Meck Soccer Academy. An honor student planning to major in pre-med, he is active in his local church and has participated in numerous community outreach ministries. "He brings the ability to play at a high level with strong academics and a solid character grounded in his faith," Furey said, noting that Franco should compete for playing time from the start. The coach praised the combination of athletic ability, academics and Christian background for Brayer and Perelman as well. Brayer was a three-year member of Tennessee's Olympic Development Program team, and Perelman was a four-year starter and senior captain at Hardin Valley and captain also of his Crush Revolution club team. "Anthony is a crafty midfielder who will bring creativity to our flanks," Furey said. "[Perelman] has had a stellar high school career ... and brings a good work ethic and winning mentality to our program."
• Marshall Deakins of Dunlap was third with 20 pounds, 4 ounces for his five-fish limit in the Walmart Bass Fishing League Choo Choo Division tournament Saturday on Lake Guntersville, and McDonald's Corey Bradley was fifth with 18-12. Deakins received $1,322; Bradley got $793. Two men from Hazel Green, Ala., earned $5,963 and $1,981 as the top finishers: Will Yelverton with 28-4 and Kenneth Kay with 25-0. Trent Wright of Scottsboro was fourth among the co-anglers with 17-9, and David Ashley of Estill Springs was sixth with 16-8. Andrew Clayton of Westpoint, Tenn., was the co-angler winner with 26-10.
• ATHENS, Tenn. -- Michelle Scannell scored four goals, Marina Tharin had three goals and an assist and Tess Sasse had two goals and two assists as Tennessee Wesleyan beat visiting Reinhardt 15-9 in women's lacrosse Tuesday. Nicolette Dungee had 14 saves for TWC, and Monica Kay added three.
