LaFAYETTE, Ga. - Some would consider LaFayette's 2-1 weather-shortened Region 7-AAA baseball win Thursday night against visiting Allatoona a little flukey. Ramblers coach Dan Torrenti won't be one of those, and he won't let his players hear any of it.

LaFayette (8-8, 6-5) scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning and rode the pinpoint pitching of junior right-hander Micah Wyatt to one of the bigger wins in recent program history against the state-ranked Buccaneers (11-5, 7-3). The game was called after five innings and two hours due to lightning.

Moments after the game was officially called, a severe thunderstorm struck the LaFayette area.

"You hate situations like this because we want to play it, but the rules are the rules and we can't put the kids at danger," Torrenti said. "We did a good job executing. We got some baserunners and took advantage of some mistakes in the fourth. It's like I told them: You didn't win this because of lightning; you won it because you executed and did the little things right.

"This is the biggest win we've had in a long, long time, and I'm proud of them for sticking with it."

The first three Bucs batters reached Wyatt for singles to load the bases in the first inning. Lewis Bradley's sacrifice fly made it 1-0, but Wyatt struck out the next batter and ended the inning with a groundout to escape further trouble.

"That was huge, and it came down to making pitches, and Micah threw strikes tonight and we didn't make any errors," Torrenti said. "He's now got 48 strikeouts and just eight walks, so he's efficient and he really kept it together tonight."

LaFayette put the first two runners on in the fourth against Allatoona's Lucas Brown on a walk to McKenzie Kelehear and a hit batter. Rhett White then put down a sacrifice bunt that Brown threw into right field, allowing Kelehear to score and Sam Clayton to reach third. White then took off for second and Allatoona catcher Alex Terry bluffed a throw to second and threw wildly to third, allowing Clayton to score the go-ahead run.

Wyatt then made the runs hold up. The Bucs put a runner on in the next two innings but didn't score, and Wyatt retired the final eight batters of the game.

The umpires called the players off the field before the start of the sixth, and persistent lightning never allowed the game to restart.

"We had kind of a rough start, but this team fought back and this is a good win," Wyatt said. "I wish we could have played all seven innings, but the weather just wouldn't hold off. This is a big win for us to beat a state-ranked team."
