The Tennessee Highway Patrol has said it is seeking help in finding the driver of a vehicle that struck a pedestrian on the westbound side of Interstate 24 in Marion County near the 145 mile-marker just after midnight Friday morning.

According to a news release, troopers said 48-year-old Michael Anthony Bellgowan, of Palm Bay, Fla., was struck and killed by a vehicle, believed to have been a tractor trailer, while standing on the side of the interstate about 12:15 a.m. CST.

Crash investigators believe the driver attempted to avoid striking Bellgowan due to skid marks discovered on the road, officials state in the release. The vehicle, however, did not stop and continued driving west on I-24, officials said.

The vehicle might have damage on the front, right side, officials said.

Anyone who witnessed the accident or knows the location of the suspect truck and driver should contact the Tennessee Highway Patrol in Chattanooga at 423-634-5856.
