The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Kaylene Chadwell from Franklin, Tenn., was named Tuesday as the Southern Conference women's tennis freshman of the year, and 2010 freshman of the year Jenna Nurik from UTC was a first-team all-conference selection. Junior Roberto Vieira made the men's second team despite some injury issues that may have kept him from being a first-teamer for the third year in a row. Chadwell was 22-10 overall in singles and 15-5 in spring dual matches with an 8-2 SoCon record for the Lady Mocs, who are seeded fifth in the conference tournament and play Friday morning against fourth seed Samford in Charleston, S.C. Nurik went 23-11 in singles and was 14-6 in spring duals at the No. 1 spot. Vieira was 14-11 overall and 10-7 at No. 1 singles but missed four matches for the Mocs, who are seeded eighth and face ninth seed Davidson at 9 a.m. Thursday in the league tournament.
• KNOXVILLE -- Ivy Renfroe pitched a four-hit shutout and sister Ellen Renfroe followed with a five-hitter as eighth-ranked Tennessee beat Memphis 5-0 and 3-2 in college softball Tuesday, and Madison Shipman and Melissa Brown took turns driving in two runs for the Lady Vols (37-9). Former Chattanooga Christian and Chattanooga State player Laura Curtis was 1-for-2 in the first game and 2-for-3 and scored a run in game two for Memphis (18-31).
• Lee University rose to No. 11 in the NAIA softball rankings Tuesday, but the Lady Flames' home doubleheader against No. 9 Shorter was postponed by the threat of rain to today at 3 p.m. Similarly, Chattanooga State's No. 1 junior college team postponed its scheduled TCCAA home doubleheader against Walters State until today at 2.
• Taylor Yates and Haley Johnson each had three hits and five RBIs and Rachel Kirby and Kristina Bailey each had three hits and three RBIs as Bryan College beat Tennessee Temple 25-3 in the first game of their softball doubleheader Tuesday. Johnson had a home run and Kirby was 3-for-3 with a triple and two doubles, and Rozlyn Roberts pitched a five-inning two-hitter with eight walks. The second game was rained out. Bryan (15-36) lost 8-0 and 3-1 to visiting Virginia Intermont in Appalachian Athletic Conference play Monday, and Tennessee Wesleyan rose to 12-4 in the AAC, 18-20 overall, by winning 5-0 and 8-0 Tuesday at Columbia (S.C.) College.
• PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. -- The Lee University women's golf team is in first place by 19 strokes over second-place Shorter after the first round of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament Tuesday at The Oaks, and Lee's Courtney Shelton and Madison Alexander share the top spot individually 75s. Sloane Skinner shot a 79 and Geandra Almeida had an 81. Shelton was the SSAC women's player of the year, and Alexander was the freshman of the year. The tournament ends today.
• Sewanee senior Jack Thomasson was the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's lacrosse offensive player of the week after his 11 goals and an assist in two wins last week. He scored seven goals against Southwestern.
