Finding the trees beyond the AT&T Field wall was welcome relief for one Chattanooga Lookouts outfielder and more of the same for another.
Left fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez homered twice and right fielder Blake Smith went deep once Wednesday night as the Lookouts defeated Mobile 8-7 in 12 innings. Cavazos-Galvez entered the game having gone 1-for-27 in his previous two series, including an 0-for-10 showing at Tennessee.
"It looked like a slump by the actual numbers, but I didn't feel like I was 1-for-27," Cavazos-Galvez said. "Tonight was definitely a confidence booster, though."
The 24-year-old Cavazos-Galvez hit .277 in 116 games with the Lookouts last season but was hitting .153 before his four-RBI night.
Mobile broke a 5-5 deadlock in the 12th on a Marc Krauss two-run double, but the Lookouts rallied for three runs and won the game when Mobile first baseman Yazy Arbelo couldn't turn the double play on a bases-loaded grounder by Rafael Ynoa with one out.
"At the end, they were worse than we were," Lookouts pitching coach Chuck Crim said after the four-hour game that left each team 10-11.
Smith was hitting .111 through Chattanooga's first two series before bouncing back to hit .364 in his next two. The second-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2009 homered against both Birmingham and Tennessee and tallied seven RBIs in those two series.
Cavazos-Galvez and Smith provided a 5-1 lead for the Lookouts entering the seventh, but Mobile pulled even on Kyle Green's two-run triple to center, David Nick's RBI infield hit and Wladimir Sutil's RBI double to left. Lookouts pitcher Chris Withrow allowed just one run from the second through the sixth inning but was responsible for most of Mobile's damage in the seventh.
Nathan Eovaldi started for Chattanooga but worked one inning, taking four minutes to record three ground outs.
Before the game, Lookouts shortstop Jake Lemmerman suffered a cut over his eye during infield practice. The cut required three stitches, and Lemmerman said he should be fine.
Allen Webster (1-3, 4.43) is scheduled to start tonight's 7:15 game for the Lookouts, with Trevor Bauer (4-0, 0.40) scheduled for the BayBears. Webster is the No. 2 prospect in the Dodgers organization, according to Baseball America, while Bauer is No. 1 in the Diamondbacks organization.
