The board of the Tennessee Valley Authority on Thursday agreed to continue with the completion of Watts Bar Nuclear Plant's unit 2 reactor despite delays and cost overruns.

The plant now is estimated to cost $4.2 to $4.5 billion - twice as much as originally expected - and be delayed by three more years.

TVA now expects the plant to be completed by December 2015 or June 2016 at the latest. It was originally to be completed and online this year.

TVA's new nuclear construction chief, Mike Skaggs, told the board today that the estimates includes potential new requirements in the wake of meltdowns at the nuclear plant in Fukushima, Japan.
