Danielle Alfano from Chattanooga and Notre Dame High School was honored Tuesday night as the overall female student-athlete of the year at King College in Bristol, Tenn. Alfano was all-region in cross country, 13th in the Conference Carolinas meet and the league's fall scholar-athlete of the year, and she repeatedly set the school record for the one-mile run in indoor track and field. Former Ooltewah standout Morgan Shelton was King's most valuable player for women's soccer.

Baseball

• COLUMBUS, Ga. - Senior second baseman Blake Barber headed five Lee University baseball players on the All-Southern States Athletic Conference first team as the league's player of the year, and the Flames won their SSAC tournament opener 11-6 over Mobile on Thursday. Barber, a transfer from NCAA power Cal State Fullerton who had a league-high .438 batting average with 52 RBIs and 57 runs scored, went 2-for-5 with three RBIs while Jorge Saez was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs and Trevor Burgess homered, doubled and drove in four runs for the Flames (47-8-1). Leadoff batter Brady Renner was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three runs scored, and Roberto Duran was 2-for-4 with three runs. Patrick Merkling (8-1) was the winning pitcher, allowing six hits and one run with six strikeouts in six innings. Other Lee All-SSAC first-teamers were pitcher Kris Hall, reliever Jose Samayoa, first baseman Roberto Reyes and designated hitter Corey Davis. Mike Moore, Edmanuel Rivera and Saez were second-teamers, while Renner made the Golden Glove team and Kyle Briner and James Fowlkes made the all-freshman team.

• Covenant College senior James Rollins was voted the Great South Athletic Conference baseball player of the year for 2012. He has a league-high .479 batting average with four home runs, 19 doubles and 27 RBIs for the Scots, and he has hit safely in 25 of his last 26 games. Covenant teammates K.C. Simons and Scott Gillespie made the GSAC all-freshman team, Simons with a .298 average and Gillespie with a .302 mark and a team-high 34 RBIs.

• SEWANEE, Tenn. - Tennessee Temple University beat Sewanee 21-5 in baseball Thursday, ending the Tigers' season at 14-23. Winning pitcher Brandon Davis was 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Dustin Stowers was 4-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs for Temple (13-35-1), while Taylor Wilson was 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs and Jon Clayton was 3-for-6 with an RBI. Ben Clune, Jack Whaley and John Rafferty each had two of Sewanee's seven hits.

• Tennessee Wesleyan beat Reinhardt 19-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball Thursday at Athens, Tenn. The teams play a doubleheader starting at 1 today. Bryan's AAC game at Bluefield was suspended by rain with the visiting Lions leading 7-1 in the fourth inning. They will resume at 10 a.m. before playing a doubleheader. Bryan coach Taylor Hasty did not make the trip because his wife gave birth to their second son early Thursday morning.

Softball

• COLUMBUS, Ga. - The SSAC East took it on the chin against West Division teams as the conference softball tournament got under way Thursday. East top seed Lee University lost 7-1 to West No. 4 Belhaven after the Mississippi team beat Emmanuel 5-2, and East runner-up Shorter fell 10-8 to West No. 3 Mobile. Charlie Wooden's home run was the only score for Lee (46-9), ranked 10th in the NAIA. The Lady Flames made four errors, and only one run was earned against pitcher Brittany Balough (24-3). They play the morning winner between 12th-ranked Shorter and Emmanuel at 2 p.m. in the losers bracket today. Lee junior shortstop Jennifer Ringle was the SSAC's newcomer of the year, and she, Balough, Kelsey Barnes and Ana Coscorrosa were first-team all-conference. Wooden and Savanna Bell were all-division. Shorter's Maddie Bray from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School was one of two freshmen of the year, and senior center fielder Charlsie Broome from LaFayette was a Gold Glove honoree. Broome, Bray and Emily Clements from LaFayette were three of Shorter's four All-SSAC players, and Lee's Dominique Hannah and pitcher Jessa Watts were all-freshman choices along with Bray. Lee's Hannah Hight and Shorter's Brooke Crawford from Pisgah, Ala., were Champions of Character representatives for their teams.

• Pitcher Chelsea Krafft, Beth Harris as an outfielder and infielder Courtney Wagoner were All-GSAC softball players from Covenant College for 2012. Krafft, a senior from Dalton, has an earned run average of 2.87 with 169 strikeouts in 160 innings. Classmate Harris from LaVergne, Tenn., led the GSAC with 13 home runs and hit .451 with 50 RBIs in 38 games, while junior Wagoner from Cumming, Ga., hit .410 with four homers and 29 RBIs.

• KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Regular-season tri-champion Tennessee Wesleyan stayed alive in the AAC softball tournament Thursday with a 3-1 win over Union College, but sixth-seeded Bryan ended its season with a 7-6 loss to top-seeded Milligan after wiping out an early 6-0 deficit. Sarah Arrowood batted in three runs for Milligan (39-20), which won with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Courtney Combs and Rachel Kirby each was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Britney Hurst had a two-run homer, Katie Vaughn was 2-for-3 and scored twice and Lauren Mathews was 2-for-3 and scored once for Bryan (16-40). Wesleyan was trailing Virginia Intermont 9-7 with one out in the seventh inning when rain stopped the last game of the night, but the Lady Bulldogs already had two runs in the inning and had two runners on base. Intermont had lost 5-0 earlier to Reinhardt on a two-hitter by AAC pitcher of the year Maddie Monroe from Calhoun, Ga.
