about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Bhalla would be an improvement on most Democrats, but I don't think his gimmick would work--we pay our reps to know the details, and I think special interests or tiny numbers would take over his polls. Bill Taylor sounded less bad to the TFP than most Democrats.

I gave you a Scripture verse, God's word - "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. Romans 1:18."

Now, it seems to me that you would have to agree that homosexuality, like other sins is ungodliness and unrughteousness. Agree or disagree?

So much for Obama helping poor women with their birth control cost. Women should be outraged.

Today is a big day for birth control. Under President Obama's health care reforms private insurance companies have to start providing contraception for free on August 1. That means no more co-pays for birth control. But while the law goes into effect, only a tiny fraction of the 97 million American women between the ages of 18 and 64 will be able to snag any co-pay free contraception today. First, only women with private insurance plans will be affected. About 65 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 64 – those that are old enough to be adults but too young enough to qualify for Medicare--have private health insurance which they get from a their employer or pay for out of pocket, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. That means the 19 million women between the ages of 18 and 64 who are uninsured will still have to pay for contraception out of pocket. The 17 million women on Medicaid also may not feel the effects. Each state gets to decide whether their Medicaid plans will provide at no cost the contraception and seven other women's health services that are covered under the no-cost-sharing law taking effect today.

alprova, you are the first I have ever run into to claim that the Bible is not the word of God. Now it is quite obvious that if one believes he does not have the word of God then that person can believe and act anyway he pleases with no accountability to God.

This is what the practicing atheist believes. I have noticed that the practicing atheist will not proclaim that there is no God but will create some sort of a philosophical god in his mind wherein he determines what is right and wrong in his eyes and thus behaves according to his selfish desires, believing he will escape judgment.

Also, how do you justify in your mind referring to Scripture from the Bible when you say there is no Bible?

Why should they be outraged? Because they get co-pay free birth control if they have insurance? The alternative is that EVERY WOMAN would have to pay a co-pay or out of pocket whether they have insurance or not.

Are you really that stupid? And it appears you failed to read this part:

"Each state gets to decide whether their Medicaid plans will provide at no cost the contraception and seven other women's health services that are covered under the no-cost-sharing law taking effect today"

The states get the choice to provide women's services and contraception. Women should be thankful. Your attempt to conjure up some type of controversy in this situation is laughable and a total fabrication.

I caught what you wrote. I question your sincerity though.

I could state how one becomes a Christian in a few words, but it would be so general that it could be misinterpreted - "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." Romans 10:9

A Christian knows what that verse means and what is required because of the teaching of other Scripture. For example the word "believe" does not mean just a mental agreement but a trust and commitment to the person and work of Jesus Christ. It is a personal relationship to Jesus Christ.

It would take me a long time and a lot of typing for me to properly present the Gospel.

There are many excellent websites where the plan of Salvation is presented. I like the teaching of John MacArthur at gty.org.

This website page is great - http://www.achristianhome.org/Bible_Studies/ChristianBelief/Salvation%20Assurance.htm

96 Days to Go:

Bernanke is Bluffing: Fed Powerless to Avert Recession

The Federal Reserve has indicated it will take further steps as necessary to promote a stronger economic recovery. Sadly, the Fed’s bullets are spent, and the U.S. economy is skidding as a result of Administration missteps.

The economy is growing at less than 2%. Unemployment holds steady at 8.2% only because so many folks have quit looking for work and are no longer counted in the official tally of joblessness.

Consumer spending has slowed substantially, because Americans are pessimistic that President Obama’s economic policies will fix the economy and are hunkering down for a long siege.

Central bank policy can help dampen inflation when the economy overheats and lift borrowing and home sales a bit when it falters, but it can’t instigate faster growth when the President and Congress fail to address structural problems.

Demand for U.S. products is burdened by huge trade deficits on oil and consumer goods with China. Both result from government inaction.

President Obama has significantly curtailed production of oil offshore and in Alaska, and refused calls from economists across the ideological spectrum to force China to stop manipulating its currency. Together, reversing those actions would create at least five million jobs.

Now conditions in Europe threaten to pull down an economic recovery, made needlessly fragile by policy missteps beyond the purview of the Federal Reserve.

Lacking better policies from the Oval Office, there is little the Federal Reserve can do.

How do you reconcile the Mormon belief that people can be Baptized AFTER DEATH? Or that there are three heavens(a heavenly version of segregation?) or the belief God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are three separate beings when according to the "Christian" belief they are ONE in three beings.

Those are just a few of the contradictions between Christianity and Mormonism but no one talks about those instead right wingnuts spend their time trying to prove President Obama is a Muslim which in reality is a much more MAINSTREAM religion than Mormonism.

Jack, Mormon's ARE a threat-it is the church's intentions to remove the constitution and establish a theocracy. Radical Islam is also a threat, and yet there is no evidence to suggest that Obama was or is a muslim. He does, however, know a lot about Islam; we all should try to learn about the other religions of the world.

conservative, I believe that anyone that accepts the existence of God, believes that Jesus died for their sins, and tries to live a life that includes acceptance of and service to others is a Christian. The first two define their religious beliefs, the last make them truly christian. However, that is my PERSONAL take on it.

It is not enough to believe. Now, of course, I know people who do the third one only, or do the third on out of a different belief system (Allah and Mohammed, Yahweh, etc.)

Some Christians I know take it further-they learn beyond just the basics, study the bible, read the great Christian writers of today and of the past. That's wonderful, but to me not essential.

I am a non-believer. Always have been skeptical of all magic, miracles, spirits, gods, supernatural, demons, etc. That's just me. It isn't that I do not see value in religion-I certainly do, and while I try not to fake anything to please others, I enjoy the setting when I am in it. (I worked for the church indirectly for 30 years) Humans in a group that share the same values is a wonderful thing to experience. But I won't lie and say that I believe any of the supernatural premise behind it. I do share the values that spring from such beliefs: the goodness of human beings, the importance of valuing every person regardless of their shortcomings or gifts, and hope that all of us who can give a little more than we have to so that those that can't have what they need. But as a non-believer I don't do good because I hope to be rewarded, but because I like how I feel when I have done so. I don't avoid doing wrong because I fear punishment-I want to be trusted and depended upon by others. Finally, I want to make the best of this life because I believe that it is the only one I have.

Hope that helps. No, I don't eat kittens or torture puppies. I love babies, too.

I'm comprehending just fine. It's your argument that is incoherent and illogical.

"No, I don't see Mormons as a threat."

Before Ikeithlu mentioned it, no one else said that either. You brought up "radical Mormonism" out of no where.

"I don't know if The Messiah is a Muslim or not, tho he seems to lean that way."

Prove it.

"You, little man, are blinded by the radical left ether."

In what way? You make outlandish claims with no proof.

You and Joneses are on about the same 1st grade logic, comprehension and reasoning level. Not to mention you can't even conjure up a moderately factual insult. But I wouldn't expect an old fellow like yourself to think clearly in your old age anyway.

Easy, apparently you have a short memory, among other things. Leftists of your ilk on this forum have been busting Mormonism for months. Put down the pipe, son.

JackIdiot,

In what way am I blinded then? By knowing exponentially more about Mormonism or any religion than you do?

It would seem as if you are the blind one. Blind to facts, information, etc. Mormonism is a cult. It is Christian heresy AT BEST. But I guess you really do go along with Joseph Smith when he said he found a new Bible in upstate New York, right?

You're ignorant, Jack. Ignorant and oblivious. It's a terrible combination.

I'll take that as your usual "I don't have a rebuttal so I'll just attempt an insult" statement. You're really bad at this, Jackie. Stick to trolling. It's the only thing you do well.

The economy is on the verge of a second, deeper recession and all The Wart can find for topic matter is but one more shallow swipe at anything republican. All we need is for Obama to get reelected and a collapse will be upon us.

Remember that in November.

Since you guys seem determined to pound on Easy for my comment, let me elaborate:

The LDS are easily the most successful and fastest growing church in the US, perhaps in the world. All Mormons I have ever met, without exception, were the kindest and cleanest-living people I ever knew. The LDS live their teachings better than no other group; they have strong families, strong communities, strong congregations, excellent universities, they excel in everything they do. They put the rest of us to shame in this way. However, before we hold them on too high a pedestal, remember what any church member faces if he or she refuses to cooperate with church expectations. This is not like leaving your local Baptist church. You lose everything; family, business contacts, social connections. The price for resisting is HUGE, and fathers best keep their wives and children in line.

Their faith is based on some peculiar and easily disproven points. Their church has a board of scientists and historians whose job it is to research and verify with evidence the writings of the church, particularly those things that involve pre-historic and historic north America. The dirty little secret is that there is no evidence. All physical evidence points to the mainstream account of prehistoric humans arriving by the land bridge during ice ages, and Caucasians first contact being the Norse followed by the Spanish.

Finally, members are required to keep 6 months of food, water and supplies, including ammunition. This is because when the country fails, before they can take the reins and usher in the government of God that they envision, they are protected from famine, intruders, and the rabble that will starve in the aftermath. Only Mormons will survive, and they will establish their paradise on earth.

Thank you for another great post. I think there would be quite a few non-mormon preppers making it through. Do they have plans for them?

In my psychiatric practice, we refer to disordered personalities such as Jack Dennis, joneses, etc. as ‘deranged demagogues’ or ‘self-opinionated’. The more you resist or try to counter-act their delusions, the more combative they become.

Again, no one has even mentioned the subject in about 50 posts. In Any event, this Bennett cartoon shows just how pathetic and bitter the liberals and democrats have become in the 3rd District.

The candidates you idiots are running couldn't win a race in November with a one-legged dog.

So you make these snide, bitter, immature remarks due to your frustration that people in our county/district just don't swallow the liberal Kool-aid you people try to feed us.

August 2, 2012 at 4:14 p.m.

timbo, yes, you're quite right that divergence from the actual topic is quite common here. What do you want done about it?

But no, we're concerned that you swallow the conservative opiate that you'll never admit is clouding your thoughts and ignore who is really making snide, bitter and immature remarks out of an inability to engage in anything resembling productive discussion.

Or do you want to discuss thing honestly? Ok, then what would you feel about proportional representation rather than the winner-take-all artificial districts we have? Couldn't we even have instant-run-off or require an actual majority to win?

The newspaper is running stories that show Fleischman as winning, but vote totals that show Wamp beat him by 100 votes. Who won? Which report in this newspaper is incorrect?

I checked those vote counts over at the election commission's website. They, too, are showing Weston Wamp winning with 14,305 votes over Fleischmann's 14,204.

Since it's after 2300, I take it our local version of a "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline has already run off the press. Since the editorial staff has been on a vacation from professionalism all election night, I take it that there will be no corrections made before tomorrow morning. Perhaps we should snap up some historic newspaper blunders first thing.

Front page. Does it show the correct winner of the primary or not? I'm betting it won't.

Somebody might want to tell candidate Weston Wamp that it looks like he just won his primary. Every "news organization" in town seems to be getting the count wrong. Get it right.

Wamp: 14, 305. Fleischmann: 14,204. That's a Wamp win by 101 votes.

I believe the election commission only covers the Hamilton County numbers, not the entire 3rd District.

Chuck Fleischmann 29,943 Scottie Mayfield 23,772 Weston Wamp 21,992

These figures are from the Chattanoogan. FWIW, both the Knoxville and Nashville papers have stories on Fleischmann's win and I think they are using AP's statewide figures.
