Local planners today endorsed plans for a proposed Publix grocery story on North Market Street.

ARS Ventures LLC, an Atlanta-based development firm, plans to build the 46,000-square-foot supermarket along with 2,500 square feet of additional shops at 422 N. Market Street.

The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission voted today to rezone the property for the retail development, pending final approval by the City Council.

Officials said construction could start early next year and the shopping center could open by the end of 2013.

About a half a dozen North Chattanooga residents spoke before the planning commission today, but no one voiced opposition to the proposed grocery store.
