U.S. Sen. Bob Corker today visited Alstom's $300 million turbine production plant in Chattanooga, with a company official saying the factory on track to reach its 320-employee target by early 2013.

"It's fascinating ... to see the size of the equipment," said the Tennessee Republican as he spent more than an hour at the Riverfront Parkway plant that started up two years ago. "I'm glad [Alstom] is in Chattanooga and we've got these jobs."

The former Chattanooga mayor termed the factory that now employs about 270 people "most impressive," noting it has the ability to build the world's largest energy-producing turbines.

He said Alstom spent about $15 million training the work force on the plant.

"Our Chattanooga work force continues to play a pivotal role...," Corker said.
