Prep football by the numbers

0-- Howard wins last season, the first time in 12 years the Hustlin' Tigers failed to notch a victory.

1-- State championships by northwest Georgia teams since 1974. Trion had been the last team to win a title before Calhoun claimed the 2011 Class AA championship.

2-- Hamilton County public schools that have won state football titles since the 1990s (Red Bank in 2000 and Signal Mountain in 2010).

3-- Total wins for Walker Valley the past three seasons. The Mustangs made a coaching change, hoping Glen Ryan can turn the program around.

4-- South Pittsburg appearances in the Class 1A state final in the last five years. The Pirates won two of them.

5-- Years since Ralph Potter walked the sideline as McCallie's coach. He returns to guide his alma mater after five years at Brentwood Academy.

6-- Starters gone along the defensive front seven for North Jackson. With only one starter back, the Chiefs will use a 3-4 alignment for the first time in program history.

7-- Chattanooga-area teams that have played for state championships the last two seasons. Baylor, Calhoun, Signal Mountain and South Pittsburg played for titles in 2010, and last year Baylor, Calhoun and South PIttsburg returned to finals.

8-- Wins for Lookout Valley last season. The Yellow Jackets advanced to the second round of the 1A playoffs for only the fourth time in program history.

9-- Starters returning on each side of the ball for East Hamilton, which qualified for the playoffs for the first time.

10-- Seasons since East Ridge won a playoff game. The Pioneers lost in the first round each of the last seven times they have qualified.

11- Consecutive region titles for Calhoun. The Yellow Jackets have won 73 region games in a row.

12- Senior starters Boyd-Buchanan will count on this season.

13- Consecutive seasons in which at least one Chattanooga-area team has played in a Tennessee, Georgia or Alabama state final.

14-- Consecutive playoff seasons for Boyd-Buchanan. The Bucs have advanced at least to the quarterfinals 11 times during that streak and played in four state finals.

15-- Victories for Calhoun last season on its way to the state title, culminating with a defeat of nationally ranked Buford.

16-- Seasons since Cleveland's last state championship. The Blue Raiders have advanced past the first round of the playoffs three times since then - only once in the last nine years.

17-- Consecutive playoff seasons for Tyner. The Rams have advanced at least to the second round 10 times in those years.

18-- Jersey number of East Hamilton running back Logan Jackson, who has more than 2,000 career rushing yards and is a preseason all-state selection.

19-- Regular-season touchdown passes by Bradley Central quarterback Bryce Copeland last season. He had only four interceptions all season in 184 attempts.

20-- Years since Marion County upset nationally ranked Brentwood Academy for its second state championship in three years. The Warriors won two more titles in the next three years but have advanced past the first round just three times since 1995.

21-- The number of combined wins for Hixson over the past six seasons. The Wildcats are 21-39 since 2006 and haven't made the playoffs since 2005.
