RECENT HISTORY

The Chiefs rolled through the regular season undefeated, winning all but two games by double digits, in claiming their second straight Region 7-4A title. The first-round playoff game against Cleburne County was tied four times and the Chiefs trailed before scoring late and holding on for a seven-point win. Six turnovers and a blocked punt led to the Chiefs being knocked out in the second round by Fayette County. The final turnover came with 1:20 remaining and the Chiefs trailing by seven. A pass into the end zone was intercepted and North Jackson settled for an 11-1 season. Here's a look at the regular-season win total for the last five years:

Season 1 5 10

2011 ----------(10)

2010 ----------(10)

2009 ---------(9)

2008 ----------(10)

2007 ---------(9)

THREE STRENGTHS

1) Experience at quarterback. Although he is only a sophomore, Kitt Grider threw for more than 2,000 yards and 23 touchdowns last year.

2) Depth in the line. While just two starters return on the offensive line and none in the defensive front four, plenty of talented young players should make this area a strength.

3) Familiarity. The players have been in the spread offense long enough now that confidence is high that they can score on any defense.

THREE CONCERNS

1) Defensive front seven. There are no starters back either on the defensive line or in the linebacking corps.

2) Thin in the skill positions. While there is talent among the starters, this is a team with more linemen than surefire playmakers.

3) Schedule. The Chiefs' nonregion slate includes two teams from higher classification and another, Deshler, that is a perennial state title contender.

THREE QUESTIONS WITH AUSTIN BLEVINS

(Senior defensive back)

Q: You were a rare freshman starter for one of the area's best programs. What was that first year like?

A: I got tested a lot. I played cornerback my first year, and teams would run at me and throw at me, so I got a lot of chances to prove myself. I was so nervous in my first game I wasn't real sure of myself. But after I made the first tackle of the game, I settled in.

Q: You start on both sides of the ball and were the Chiefs' leading rusher and one of the leaders in interceptions. Which side do you prefer?

A: Defense. I know most people like offense better because you get the ball and can score more, but I like to hit and I love that feeling of getting a pick[off]. I had eight interceptions last year, and that was the highlight for me.

Q: North Jackson has different goals than a lot of programs in the area. How high are the expectations this year?

A: Nothing has changed. We know we're supposed to play for the region championship and make a run at winning another state championship. That's what we want every year.
