Hydrocephalus Walk

The second annual Greater Hydrocephalus Walk will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at Coolidge Park. The 5-kilometer walk (3.1 miles) begins at 11 a.m. Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of cerebral spinal fluid in the brain (also known as "water on the brain.") Currently there is no prevention and no cure. All the money raised will be used for research. For information, call Chara McLaughen at 503-6657.

Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's Association Town Hall Meeting, 5:30-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 30 at Christ United Methodist Church, 8645 East Brainerd Road. This is a free public forum for open discussion on implementation of the National Alzheimer's Plan. For information, call Beth Cragon at 265-3600.

Health Expo

Community Health Expo, 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 9, at Chattanooga First Activity Center, 7450 Standifer Gap Road. Free screenings: blood pressure, body mass, body-fat percentage, blood glucose, cholesterol, breath capacity, Harvard Step Test, health age reports, foot exams, mammograms, children's programs and prizes. Obesity walk

The 2012 Walk from Obesity, sponsored by Chattanooga Bariatrics and Dr. Jaime Ponce, will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Waterside on Shallowford Road next to HH Gregg/Mellow Mushroom. Individuals affected by obesity, loved ones, friends, healthcare professionals and others are invited to walk to raise national awareness of the disease of obesity. Health Fair Day

Erlanger Health Fair Day will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Chattanooga Market at First Tennessee Pavilion. Representatives from multiple Erlanger facilities will be available to discuss their services and provide health screenings for memory and sleep disorders, body mass index, blood pressure, bone density and more.

Lamaze class

Labor of Love Lamaze (four-week series) is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Mondays, from Sept. 3-24. This class prepares first-time parents with information on nutrition, labor, delivery and postpartum care for mom. It includes comfort techniques used during labor. Lamaze breathing and relaxation exercises are practiced at the end of the class. A support person is recommended for expectant mothers. Breast-feeding class is free when taking this class. Memorial classes

• Diabetes self-management. This program provides an overview of diabetes, treatment, prevention of complications, meal planning and carbohydrate counting. Class is from 3:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Diabetes and Nutrition Center at Memorial Hospital. Memorial's center can help obtain a physician's referral and provide cost information. • Men and women 65 or older can get a free abdominal aortic aneurysm screening to detect bulges in the artery wall, as long as they have no previous diagnosis of abdominal aortic aneurysm and no abdominal CT in the past five years. Screenings are during September at Memorial Hospital Glenwood, Memorial Hospital Hixson and Memorial Ooltewah. Registration and appointment are required by calling 495-6000.

Erlanger offerings

• Childbirth education class/series, from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday, at Erlanger East (Gunbarrel Road), is designed for expectant parents and is taught by experienced OB nurses. Classes include stages of labor, relaxation and labor-support techniques, hospital procedures, pain-management options, after birth/home care for moms and in-hospital care for newborns. Question/answer session. Registration fee is $75. Call Erlanger's HealthLink at 778-5465 to register.

• Attend a memory screening at Erlanger East (Gunbarrel Road), from 9 a.m to noon on Wednesday. Jennifer Hindmon, R.N., of Erlanger North Senior's Unit, will administer the Mini Mental Status Exam to determine if there are problems that should be discussed with your family physician.
