Peabody & Sherman

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Social issues are currently about as important to this country as the next day's breakfast menu was on the Titanic after it hit the iceberg. ROMNEY WATCH a continuing series

"I'm Mitt Romney and I approve this message."

The Romney campaign has been airing TV ads slamming President Obama for supposedly cutting work requirements for Welfare. You know, it's rare even in this day and age when a TV blitz can combine a big lie with fear mongering and race baiting.

The GOP Trifecta!

Actually, Obama allows states more freedom and flexibility - a waiver - to get 20 % more applicants working. You could look it up but maybe you never believe anything that doesn't fit inside the pre-digested GOP agenda.

At least three fact checking organizations have completely rebutted this claim ('Pants on Fire!') and even conservative Joe Scarborough admitted there was no truth to the claim.

Romney pollster Neil Newhouse responded to the criticism with this sugarplum: “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers.”

Mitt Romney is a dirty rotten liar.

What was the debt level in 1954? Going back to that would be a good idea.

Obama/Biden or Romney/Ryan is the question. All of them sound good when they say what we need and they all say they can deliver but none of them put any real meat on the bones. My question is what and how much? Obama is the best at mantras and chants while buffoon Biden's talent other than buffoning is not evident. Romney and Ryan can quote numbers and statistics non teleprompter but what good is it doing us to know the numbers?

The current agenda is not sustainable. Taxes must increase but how much for whom? Let the current supposedly temporary rates expire and increase all personal income rates while reducing spending enough to at least have a balanced budget even if the debt remains high for a while longer. Quit trying to control everything which results in controlling nothing. Concentrate on those things that can be controlled and do so in the best way to increase employment opportunities. Close all the loop holes meaning abolish all deductions, credits, incentives etc. and set a business rate that every business pays. Or, abolish all taxes fees etc. on individuals and businesses and replace the current tax system with a retail consumption tax.

For economic growth, the period A.D. 1840-1860 excelled any 20-year-period since. A cabinet of fewer than 9 departments, and banks printed their own money (no Fed.) Good thing slavery's gone, but a lot of useful freedom would be welcome back. The libertarians Romney just bullied have it righter than he. Freedom works.

hambone, which party freed the slaves in the A.D. 1860s? Which party provided most of the opposition to civil rights during MLKing's lifetime?

The GOP freed the slaves, and Democrats opposed civil rights.

Indeed, Blackwater48. Mitt Romney is a dirty rotten liar. Personally, I think there is something particularly sinister about a man who grew up with so many privileges targeting America’s minority poor and lying about this work requirement for welfare, especially one who doesn’t work and is able to pull in 20 million a year just sitting on his duff because guys like him have rigged the U.S. tax system to favor other guys like him.

As to why a man like Mitt Romney is targeting America’s minority poor and peddling this lie about the work requirement for welfare, I don’t know. Maybe Romney longs to return to those "exclusive" days of his childhood when America’s minority poor knew their place and were essentially prohibited from obtaining things like good jobs, good schools, and good neighborhoods. Whatever the reason – the lie stinks and Romney stinks.

Mychal Massie is a respected writer and talk show host in Los Angeles. Mychal is also black.

The other evening on my twitter, a person asked me why I didn't like the Obama's? Specifically I was asked: "I have to ask, why do you hate the Obama's? It seems personal, not policy related. You even dissed (disrespect) their Christmas family picture."

The truth is I do not like the Obamas, what they represent, their ideology, and I certainly do not like his policies and legislation. I've made no secret of my contempt for the Obamas. As I responded to the person who asked me the aforementioned question, I don't like them because they are committed to the fundamental change of my/our country into what can only be regarded as a Communist state.

I don't hate them per definition, but I condemn them because they are the worst kind of racialists, they are elitist Leninists with contempt for traditional America. They display disrespect for the sanctity of the office he holds, and for those who are willing to admit same, Michelle Obama's raw contempt for white America is transpicuous.

I don't like them because they comport themselves as emperor and empress. I expect, no I demand respect, for the Office of President and a love of our country and her citizenry from the leader entrusted with the governance of same. President and Mrs. Reagan displayed an unparalleled love for the country and her people. The Reagan's made Americans feel good about themselves and about what we could accomplish. His arrogance by appointing 32 leftist czars and constantly bypassing congress is impeachable. Eric Holder is probably the MOST incompetent and arrogant DOJ head to ever hold the job. Could you envision President Reagan instructing his Justice Department to act like jack-booted thugs?

Presidents are politicians and all politicians are known and pretty much expected to manipulate the truth, if not outright lie, but even using that low standard, the Obama's have taken lies, dishonesty, deceit, mendacity, subterfuge and obfuscation to new depths. They are verbally abusive to the citizenry, and they display an animus for civility.

As I wrote in a syndicated column titled, "Nero In The White House" - "Never in my life, inside or outside of politics, have I witnessed such dishonesty in a political leader. He is the most mendacious political figure I have ever witnessed. Even by the low standards of his presidential predecessors, his narcissistic, contumacious arrogance is unequaled. Using Obama as the bar, Nero would have to be elevated to sainthood... Many in America wanted to be proud when the first person of color was elected president, but instead, they have been witness to a congenital liar, a woman who has been ashamed of America her entire life, failed policies, intimidation, and a commonality hitherto not witnessed in political leaders. He and his wife view their life at our expense as an entitlement - while America's people go homeless, hungry and unemployed."

I do not like them, because they both display bigotry overtly, as in the case of Harvard Professor Louis Gates, when he accused the Cambridge Police of acting stupidly, and her code speak pursuant to now being able to be proud of America. I view that statement and that mindset as an insult to those who died to provide a country where a Kenyan, his illegal alien relatives, and his alleged progeny, could come and not only live freely, but rise to the highest, most powerful, position in the world. Michelle Obama is free to hate and disparage whites because Americans of every description paid with their blood to ensure her right to do same.

I have a saying, that "the only reason a person hides things, is because they have something to hide." No president in history has spent over a million dollars to keep his records and his past sealed.

And what the two of them have shared has been proved to be lies. He lied about when and how they met, he lied about his mother's death and problems with insurance, Michelle lied to a crowd pursuant to nearly $500,000 bank stocks they inherited from his family. He has lied about his father's military service, about the civil rights movement, ad nausea. He lied to the world about the Supreme Court in a State of the Union address. He berated and publicly insulted a sitting Congressman. He has surrounded himself with the most rabidly, radical, socialist academicians today. He opposed rulings that protected women and children that even Planned Parenthood did not seek to support. He is openly hostile to business and aggressively hostile to Israel. His wife treats being the First Lady as her personal American Express Black Card (arguably the most prestigious credit card in the world). I condemn them because, as people are suffering, losing their homes, their jobs, their retirements, he and his family are arrogantly showing off their life of entitlement - as he goes about creating and fomenting class warfare.

Dislike for them has nothing to do with the color of their skin; it has everything to do with their behavior, attitudes, and policies. And I have open scorn for their constantly playing the race card.

It is my intention to do all within my ability to ensure their reign is one term. I could go on, but let me conclude with this. I condemn in the strongest possible terms the media for refusing to investigate them, as they did President Bush and President Clinton, and for refusing to label them for what they truly are. There is no scenario known to man, whereby a white president and his wife could ignore laws, flaunt their position, and lord over the people, as these two are permitted out of fear for their color.

Mitt Romney probably never broke a sweat in his life. He's probably never had an ounce of dirt under his fingernails. Unless I've missed something, the man has never done a day's labor...ever.

This man made his fortune buying fledgling companies, the vast majority of which, he borrowed good money from good banks until credit lines were exhausted, then bankrupted them and closed their doors.

There is no hard work involved in what he did, now in what he does now with the money he has made over the years and now invests. The man employs a staff of keenly aware, probable inside traders, who carefully select where his money is invested for the maximum payoff at all times.

Hard work? Most people would call what he has done over the years to amass his fortune to be nothing short of fraud and theft. The man made his fortune off the backs of fired workers, who used to work for destroyed companies.

It's not for me to judge people, but I do have to wonder if the man upstairs is going to greet Mr. Romney so warmly and welcome him with open arms when Romney takes the eternal celestial dirt nap.

Mitt Romney's motivation to seek the Presidency is clear as a bell, just as it was every time he arranged the purchase of a company in distress. He has no interest in serving the American people at all.

The man has nothing but his own self-interests in mind and if you do indeed work for a living, you are not on his radar screen at all.

It’s game on time kiddies!!

The Republicans have announced, and now openly displayed, that they will not be bound to facts or even the attempt at truth. They don’t give a damn what the media or fact check sites have to say. Romney man Neil Newhouse said, “Fact checkers come to this with their own sets of thoughts and 'beliefs', and we’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact checkers,” he said. The fact-checkers — whose institutional rise has been a feature of the cycle — have “jumped the shark”.

As usual, Charles Pierce (Esquire) had the best description of the Republican convention, calling the whole evening one big “demonstrable lie.” He closes with just one eloquent word: “Liars.” I suggest you read it all (see link below), but here’s a taste:

“And there was only one real story for actual journalists to tell at the end of it. The Republicans simply don’t care. “They don’t care that they lie. They don’t care that their lies are obvious. They don’t care that their lies wouldn’t fool an underpaid substitute Social Studies teacher in a public middle school, who would then probably go out one night and get yelled at by Chris Christie. They don’t care that their history is a lie and that, by spreading it, they devalue the actual history of the country, which is something that belongs to us….

“They don’t care that they lie so obviously that they always get caught, like they did with the evening’s entire theme, like they have in and around the Tampa Bay Times Forum, or with the story of poor Jack Gilchrist. The Republicans will just tell the lie again. And again. And once more, until people get tired of telling the truth in response."

The Republican Party believes in being free. Their talking points are fact-free, their budget plans are math-free, their social policies are compassion-free, and their campaign tactics are ethics-free. And the media, whose job is supposed to be a checkpoint on such fabrications, have the same surprised look as Sherman in the cartoon, as the bus (driven by Mr. Peabody) flew past their checkpoint, carrying the brain trust of the Romney campaign, who are inside thumbing their noses at them (nyea nyea nyea) and laughing at how easy it was.

"This young man named Barack Obama got one of those tickets and came over to this country. He met this woman whose great great-great-great-grandfather had owned slaves; but she had a good idea there was some craziness going on because they looked at each other and they decided that we know that the world as it has been it might not be possible for us to get together and have a child. There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Alabama, because some folks are willing to march across a bridge [in 1965, mind you]. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born [in 1961, which by my calculations is 4 years prior to the Selma march]. So don't tell me I don't have a claim on Selma, Alabama. Don't tell me I’m not coming home to Selma, Alabama.

I’m here because somebody marched [4 years after I was born, by the way]. I’m here because you all sacrificed for me. I stand on the shoulders of giants. I thank the Moses generation; but we've got to remember, now, that Joshua still had a job to do. As great as Moses was, despite all that he did, leading a people out of bondage, he didn't cross over the river to see the Promised Land. God told him your job is done. You'll see it. You'll be at the mountain top and you can see what I’ve promised. What I’ve promised to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. You will see that I’ve fulfilled that promise but you won't go there [good grief, blah blah blah].

Again, for the slow ones around here:

"This young man named Barack Obama got one of those tickets and came over to this country. He met this woman whose great great-great-great-grandfather had owned slaves; but she had a good idea there was some craziness going on because they looked at each other and they decided that we know that the world as it has been it might not be possible for us to get together and have a child. There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Alabama, because some folks are willing to march across a bridge [in 1965, mind you]. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born [in 1961, which by my calculations is 4 years prior to the Selma march, so how did the Selma march have anything to do with little Hussein's birth?]. So don't tell me I don't have a claim on Selma, Alabama. Don't tell me I’m not coming home to Selma, Alabama.

I’m here because somebody marched [4 years after little BHO was born, by the way].

It can't be put forth any more clearly. He said what he said, and all the loony spin around here cannot undo it.

Bye now!

Employees at the New Mexico Finance Authority were arrested for cooking the books on the state's finances. Along with bid-rigging by officials in the Martinez Administration. She’s been trying to shake this, but it just won’t go away, because she is, like the rest of the GOP, dishonest about any issues to which they are involved.

Such as vetoing the closing of a tax loophole that would have forced national corporations operating in New Mexico to pay the same tax rate as their locally-owned competitors.

The FBI, New Mexico Attorney General, and state Auditor's Officer are also looking into how she Manipulated a state-fair contract for notoriously mismanaged Downs at Albuquerque secured a new 25-year lease to operate a racino on New Mexico State Fairgrounds. Joneses said: “You fail to mention that under the Hussein and Moochelle Obama regime more people, especially the minorities, have been placed in poverty than any time in recent American history. Mountainlaurel, you are a liar.”

Aren’t you getting a little off message, Joneses? Indeed, what will Romney, the corporate sector, and all of those other billionaire slicks say? They’ve been spending billions trying to blame the results of their own dirty business dealings on America's minorities, especially those children who are enrolled in the Head Start, Medicaid and food stamp programs.

As for your take on poverty, I believe almost anyone with any kind economic savvy understands who has been selling out America and the role that income inequality has played in this issue. The truth is that America has been moving toward the banana republic model for some time now, and it’s not the fault of the America’s middle-class, minority poor or President Barack Obama. No, the fault lies more with those greedy types who peddle business models like Mitt Romney - carve out big profits for yourself and leave everyone else holding the bag.

And then, of course, there is the issue of those huge salaries involving the greedy C.E.O. and Executive sector. In 1980, the C.E.O. of the largest American companies earned an average of 42 times as much as the average worker, but 531 times as much in 2001. Perhaps the most astounding statistic is this: From 1980 to 2005, more than four-fifths of the total increase in American incomes went to the richest 1 percent.

degage's original statement: "Did you know Obama was born in 1961 but was concieved in 1965. His own words. His parent marched in selma and he was concieved then, thats what he said. Selma was in 1965."

You are both misreading and interpreting what the man said. He never stated that his parents marched in Selma, nor that he was conceived at that time.

The fight by blacks for civil rights extend way back to around 1955 and those rights were not truly in place and universally extended until 1968.

Here...allow me to highlight the relevant words in the same paragraph.

"This young man named Barack Obama got one of those tickets and came over to this country. He met this woman at really happen..."

Skip to;

"I’m here because somebody marched. I’m here because you all sacrificed for me..."

There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Alabama, because some folks were willing to march across a bridge. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born.

At no time does he suggest that his parents were involved in the Selma, Alabama march, nor does he begin to suggest that he was conceived at that time in history either.

You both are reading something that was never uttered.

He started of that section of his speech with reference to his parents, and concluded it with a reference to his birth.

The Selma to Mongomery march was not the only civil rights march to have taken place, nor did all civil rights marches take place in 1965. There were several marches in the Southern United States in the late 50's.

But, he was speaking to a crowd in Selma, so his remarks pertained to that one. Yeah, he muddied the water a little bit and didn't clearly separate his birth from the Selma march, but so the heck what?

Nothing he stated indicates that he implied that his parents were there in 1965, nor that he was conceived in conjunction with the event.

You two are the ones reading what you want to believe into what was actually spoken.

A direct accustion that someone is racist or bigoted, due to something the person accused of being racist or bigoted, said or wrote is one thing.

To call every liberal a racist because they do not call out "one of their own" for acting in the same manner, is ridiculous, and quite a non-issue.

That would be very much like me making a generalized statement on par with, "every Republican voter is for prohibiting abortion without any exception whatsoever," just because a minority of Republican lawmakers have signed on as co-sponsors of legislation that contains that caveat.

The decision to close that plant was made by GM management, not the President of the United States, who was George W. Bush at the time.

Had President Obama made one move to re-open one specific plant, or call for one red cent to be applied to over-ride GM's decision, the howl that would have emitted from people could have been heard if you were standing on the Moon.

You people are so wishy washy and hypocrtical to boot.

You cry, moan, and wail if the man does anything controversial as President, like making recess appointments around Congress, but then you act as if you expect him to interfere in the affairs of private enterprise by forcing GM to reopen an automobile manufacturing plant?

That's quite some rather pitiful logic you are demonstrating, don't you think?

Oh, and by the way, the auto-bailout plan was instituted while GWB was President. The Stimulus funds instituted under Obama went for infrastructure and contruction improvements across the whole country.

Not one cent from the stimulus funds passed in Congress in 2009, to the best of my knowledge, was awarded either automobile manufacturer, with one unrelated exception: Cash for Clunkers did boost car sales for a brief period of time.

Alprova, the Republican power brokers want to (will have) have their cake and eat it too. The rank and file, the tea partiers have been blinded by slick PR.

Talking wise and snotty about Mitt Ryan and the rest of the Republican Conventions version of ‘Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In’ , and getting all smug about their thinly veiled economic Darwinism, their outrageous Patriarchal, Talibanic views on female rights and physiology, or returning women to their ancient roles as chattel, is surely satisfying. But as a VFW, and father and grandfather of young men and women, I hope all who post here are also keeping, in some corner of their brains, some awareness that today’s figurehead is continuing and deepening the charge down a tyrannical slope that so many failed empires have trail blazed before. "We" might succeed in keeping Roadkill and Romeo out of the White House, but the long slow collapse of our Republic, endless Orwellian wars, the continued erosion of rights and economic security show no signs of being remedied by the people of the Current Occupant's administration.

However, after listening to the Republican convention, it is clearly evident that these people are on an unholy mission to enforce their own version of Sharia law. Behold the American Taliban.

To answer mirawebs query; “Do they really think people are that uninformed?” Yes they do. And yes they are.

Their proposal is a serious and credible plan, but I cannot support it. We must address the explosive growth of our health care entitlement programs at the structural level to meet the fiscal and economic challenges confronting this nation.*

He rejected it because the cuts to Medicare and Medicaid did not go far enough for his tastes.

There is a link to a .pdf labeled as his "Statement for the Record" but the .pdf link there goes to a document that can't be opened.

Google was able to find the long form of the Ryan commission statement (thanks Google!)

Ryan there states that Medicare is the reason he voted against Simpson-Bowles:

Because of this concern, I worked with fellow Commissioner Alice M. Rivlin to develop a plan for Medicaid and Medicare (see Appendix 1). The proposal would make no changes for those now 55 or older, as efforts to save these programs ought not disrupt benefits for those in or near retirement.

For those younger than 55, Medicare would provide a list of approved health plans, along with a payment equal to average Medicare costs, so they could select a plan suitable for their needs.

This payment would be means-tested and risk-adjusted, and would grow at a rate of GDP + 1 percent.

The current Medicare Program should undergo a number of small, common sense changes to help achieve long-term sustainability.

These savings should include comprehensive medical malpractice reform, combining Parts A and B deductibles and eliminating first-dollar coverage in Medigap plans.

He constructed some poorly chosen words and sentences, but I don't think for one second that he was intentionally attempting to make any connection between his birth, his parents, and Selma.

Clearly, the man screws up more often when speaking off the cuff, but that trait is an indication of his humananity.

"Alpro...have you seen or do you plan to see the movie 2016?"

I will not pay one red cent to view that film. If, one day, I can see it for free, then yes, I will watch it. I know without a doubt already, that it is chocked full of unsupported accusations, suppositions, and outright lies.

This obsession with the President's past and all the accusations of conspiracy is absolutely mind boggling. It's unprecedented. It's ridiculous. It's quite pointless.

"I don't think anyone already knowing how they will vote will go see it."

Oh...there are plenty of people who will pay good money to see it, who will believe everything related in that documentary as if it were written in the Bible.

"2016 us a documentary of where Obama came from. It doesn't slam him or make outlandish unprovable claims. It is about where he lived and came from which is no problem but some are convinced the problem is where he lives now, not where he was when."

Scan the web, Harp. There are dozens of fact-checkers that have jumped all over the thing. One fundamental truth surrounding all of this crap is that if Barack Obama was a white man who spent time in Switzerland as a boy, there would be nowhere for anyone to go to attempt to demean the man.

But because the President's father was Negro and a self-declared Muslim, and because the President spent time in a country dominated by Muslims for a brief period of time, his childhood and every word he has ever written, has been scrutinized relentlessly.

It's old. It's tiresome. And thankfully, most of the people who live in this nation see what this crap is all about and they yawn when people attempt to bring it up.

Clearly, the lack of interest by most people to buy into all the conspiracy theories, as evidenced by the increase in activity the closer it gets to election day, there are some people who are stark-raving, bat-crap crazy.

It is amazing the liberal lie about this plant. Do liberals really think the public is that stupid?

Obama said: ‘I believe that if our government is there to support you ... this plant will be here for another hundred years.’ That's what he said in 2008. Well, as it turned out, that plant didn't last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that's how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight.”

A GM press release confirms that the automaker had placed the Janesville plant on “standby capacity” – an auto industry term for a factory no longer producing vehicles – in May of 2009.

“Janesville was placed on standby capacity in May 2009 and will remain in that status,” GM said in a June 26, 2009 press release.

"It is also true that in Dec. 2008 General Motors stopped production of SUVs at the Janesville plant. However they didn’t stop production of other vehicles and idle the plant until April of 2009."

"So the TheObozo promised twice he would keep the plant open and then let it close during his administration while G.M. was under the direct control of government appointed officials."

Argue with a photograph - http://www.democraticunderground.com/101753055

A skeleton crew continued to work at Janesville Assembly through June, 2009, completing the Janesville/Isuzu light truck contract, and to finalize the permanent closing of the plant, but the demise of those final workers was also set in stone, months before Barack Obama took office.

Paul Ryan's claim that then candidate Barack Obama "promised" the workers that their plant would be saved is utter B.S. too. Barack Obama did not at any time make any "promise" that their jobs would be saved.

His EXACT statment to the workers at that plant: "I know that General Motors received some bad news yesterday, and I know how hard your governor has fought to keep jobs in this plant. But I also know how much progress you've made -- how many hybrids and fuel-efficient vehicles you're churning out."

And I believe that if our government is there to support you, and give you the assistance you need to re-tool and make this transition, that this plant will be here for another hundred years."

In response to the announcement that the layoffs for Janesville, Wisconsin were to be accelerated, candidate Obama stated to an AP reporter;

"Reports that the GM plant I visited in Janesville may shut down sooner than expected are a painful reminder of the tough economic times facing working families across this country."

"This news is also a reminder that Washington needs to finally live up to its promise to help our automakers compete in our global economy. As president, I will lead an effort to retool plants like the GM facility in Janesville so we can build the fuel-efficient cars of tomorrow and create good-paying jobs in Wisconsin and all across America."

There was never any "promise" uttered by Barack Obama to save their jobs.

Proof that Paul Ryan is keenly aware of when the decision to close the plant occured, and by whom;

Hogwash. "Standby status" is an auto industry term used to describe a currently closed auto plant that stands ready to be reopened if and when the demand for automobiles that the plant is tooled to produce, rises to a point that opening another plant is economically viable.

I've never claimed to be an expert or an authority regarding any issue or subject, but I am quite capable of doing the research necessary to confidently post a factual accounting of practically anything under the sun.

The way you phrase your question does not lend to a simple yes or no answer.

Did he promise to cut the debt in half? Yes he did.

Did he lie when he said it? No he did not.

For his promise to meet the definition of a lie, he would have to know that he had no intention of following through with his stated promise. I firmly believe that he had every intention of honoring his promise, but the economy had not finished its free fall when he made that promise.

Thus, as much as he wanted to follow through with his promise, the economy has made it all but impossible for him to keep that promise.

It was somewhat optimistic and naive promise, but it was not a lie.

Have you ever visited newsgroups or file sharing websites?

Movies that have been in theaters for a weekend can be found and downloaded if you know where to look for them. Software that costs hundreds of dollars can be found for free. Recently released music can be found as well. Just be sure that you're computer is protected to the hilt, for hackers just love to post their latest creations imbedded in popular files. It's a great way to pick up some nasty computer viruses if you don't know what you are doing.

You're free to be as skeptical as you wish, but I have every reason to believe that if one were to take the time to look, and one knew where to look, a clean copy of that piece of crap can be found and downloaded this very minute in a number of places on the web.

If I were truly interested in seeing that piece of crap, I could find it posted in fifteen minutes or less.

It surprises me someone claiming to be thorough was not at the first showing to enable you to attack any false information in a documentary of where he was when with whom. I saw it and saw nothing to sway me away from Obama. But I also watched Romney on CNN and the attack mob after the speech and Jim Cargle didn't influence me either. I don't like either very much at this point. I keep hoping one of them will reveal their specific plan to have more job opportunities and to right the economy, address the deficits and debt. It would be great if they would reveal who they would appoint to their cabinet and other key positions. I am not looking for a preacher, a priest or a religious leader. I would prefer someone that ignored all the fringe social agenda crap, leave that to local and state governments, but get on with assuring there are enough decent paying job opportunities for anyone wanting and capable of doing a job. CNBC article opines that.......

It may not really even be possible to raise taxes on the wealthy to fight inflation. They’ll move out of taxable income and rely on lower-taxed sources of wealth, which doesn’t necessarily dry up demand. So you get a slower economy and continued inflation. It’s the basic recipe for stagflation.

You can’t fight inflation by taxing the wealthy. And since fighting inflation is the primary reason our government would need to raise taxes, the proposals to raise taxes on the wealthy just don’t add up.

..................................................................

None of the Washington elite and none of the cadidates seem to understand investment income (capital gains) compared to earned income. Obama wins and tax rates go up I already know the tax exempt muni bonds I will buy. No doubt those with much more at stake than I have will probably move more aggressively and quicker therefore the revenue from this source will not increase while investment capital is reduced.

The Media's 'Fact Check' Smokescreen

"Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler posted a piece — "Ryan misleads on GM plant closing in hometown" — saying Ryan "appeared to suggest" that Obama was responsible for the closure of a GM plant in Janesville, Wis".

"That's not true," Kessler said. "The plant was closed in December 2008, before Obama was sworn in."

"What's not true are Kessler's "facts." Ryan didn't suggest Obama was responsible for shuttering the plant. Instead, he correctly noted that Obama promised during the campaign that the troubled plant "will be here for another hundred years" if his policies were enacted".

If it makes you feel any better, I don't spend money to see musicals, movies that are total toilet humor, or those that star Will Ferrell.

I don't have to see that piece of crap to know what's in it or what point of views are being expressed in it.

It's nothing but pop psychology from start to finish. I read enough of that crap in this very forum every day.

I know that not one Obama supporter appears or was interviewed to offer even a token instance of balance or fairness throughout the entire hit piece on the President.

I know that the entire movie revives old and tiresome barbs that have long been debunked regarding those charged with being close associates of the President.

You are 100% correct. I do not agree with it and I have every right to do so. If you consider me a fool for that, more power to you.

Why Liberals lie about what they really believe Once you've watched liberals long enough to understand how they think -- scratch that, how they feel -- they become extraordinarily predictable.

To begin with, the liberal agenda is, in many respects, the same as it was in the thirties. Whether you call it communism, fascism, socialism, liberalism, or progressivism, the only real difference is how much they believe they can get away with, the way they sell it to people, and the latest trendy name for what they believe.

So, once the liberals pick a policy from their stale program to push, the next step is to get it implemented. This is where liberals have problems because whether a policy makes sense, is practical, or actually improves people's lives is of secondary importance to them. What is important to liberals is whether supporting or opposing that policy makes them feel good about themselves.

One of my favorite lines from Ryan's speech was the image of the late-20's college grad, jobless and still living in his childhood bedroom staring up at a fading Obama poster. Classic.

joneses said...

Continued

This is why liberals continue to support dysfunctional policies that have been failing miserably for decades and why they often oppose common sense programs that have been proven to work time and time again -- because it isn't about whether it works or not, it's about how it makes them feel.

In other words, a liberal will almost always prefer a policy that's extremely expensive, is difficult to implement, helps almost no one, but seems "nice" -- to a policy that is cheap, simple to implement, extremely effective, and seems "mean."

However, since most Americans make decisions about policies based on whether or not they believe the policy makes people's lives better or worse, liberals have had to become habitually dishonest about what they believe and want to do to get their ideas put into action.

This is a point worth stressing because many people who aren't familiar with politics believe that conservatives and liberals are simply flip sides of the same coin and therefore, approach issues the same way. However, conservatives genuinely believe that this is a center-right country. That's why conservatives have no qualms about being publicly labeled as conservatives and it's part of the reason why we're much more honest than the Left -- because we believe that a majority of the American people generally agree with us and share our values.

August 31, 2012 at 3:28 p.m.
joneses said...

Continued

So, those of us on the Right spend our time trying to explain to the American people what we really want to do, while the Left spends its time trying to hide what it really wants to do from the American people.

Because of this, when liberals don't feel that the political winds are blowing in their direction, not only will they generally avoid discussing the things they believe, they will typically deny that they believe them at all.

Additionally, liberals go to bizarre lengths to tilt the political playing field in their favor. They move into the mainstream media so that they can tip what are supposed to be "objective" news stories in their favor. They get into positions of power in our educational system so that they can teach kids liberal propaganda before they're old enough to know better. They uniformly support judges who care nothing about the Constitution as long as it moves liberal ideological goals forward. Even the Left's support of illegal immigration is rooted in the desire to bring in millions of poor people from socialist countries who are more likely to vote Democratic. If they can't convince the American voters they're right, then they'll just bring in some new voters.

More disturbing is the Left's ever-increasing reliance on what are commonly thought of as fascist tactics. Liberals at college campuses attempt to disrupt conservative speeches and the Democrats want to try to drive conservative talk radio hosts off the air with the Fairness Doctrine. Conservatives like Tom DeLay, Rush Limbaugh, and Ann Coulter have been targeted criminally for political reasons and there's even talk of trying to jail members of the Bush Administration over policy differences after they're out of office. Ideological soulmates of modern liberals -- like Stalin, Lenin, and Mao -- would certainly approve of those tactics.

Still, even though this is a center-right country, we do have political cycles and there are times when those cycles favor the Left. When that happens and the Lefties start to get a bit more confident, usually a few liberals at the edges will start talking about what they want to do. At that early point, most other liberals will still vehemently deny their ideological goals to the public out of fear that it will prevent them from getting into power.

August 31, 2012 at 3:29 p.m.
joneses said...

Continued

However, when the Left gains enough strength to be capable of getting one of the policies they favor implemented, all the liberals who previously denied that they supported it will unapologetically shift on a dime and vote for it en masse -- while they rely on their ideological allies in the media and the fact that many Americans are ill informed about politics to cover their tracks.

So, if you want to know what liberals want to do, their words mean absolutely nothing because lying about their agenda has become as natural to them as chasing a cat is to a dog.

Instead, what you have to do is watch what other liberals have done when they have come into power. Look at Canada, where conservatives are being put on trial for hate crimes because they've dared to criticize Muslims. Look at European countries, where they have socialistic economies, sky high tax rates, rigid speech codes, and overweening nannystates. You can even look at liberal enclaves in the United States like Berkeley and San Francisco, where members of the military are treated like pariahs and they boo them.

St. Jude Medical [300] layoffs a move to offset pressure of medical device tax [Obamacare tax] Posted by admin at August 31, 2012 Excerpt: “On Thursday, St. Jude Medical (NYSE:STJ) announced that it was laying off 300 people and organizing its four businesses under two operating units. The move, the Minnesota medical device maker stated, was expected to save $50 million to $60 million in pre-tax operational expenses annually. Two analysts saw the layoffs as a measure to offset the imminent pressure of the 2.3 percent medical device tax. “While public companies should always be looking at ways to save money, it is notable that the $50-60 million in expected 2013 savings is in the same ballpark as our 2013 estimate of $62 million for the new Medical Device Excise Tax that starts Jan 1 2013,” said Thom Gunderson, an analyst with Piper Jaffray, in an email. “Other medical device companies have or soon will be implementing cutbacks to help balance this new tax.”

With the current tax structure and process the government could take 100% of the income from wealthiest 5% and spread it among everyone starting at the bottom up and the economy would not improve. China and other importers would see an immediate boost in their economy and America might see a temporary boost in retail sales. The most salient characteristic of the Obama administration’s abject failure to put the American economy back to work has been its deafening silence on the issue in his campaign.

President Obama doesn’t talk about the economy’s painful weaknesses. Democrats in Congress are all but silent on the issue, as if it doesn’t exist. His campaign ads ignore it altogether as if everything’s fine, asking voters to turn their attention to lesser issues — ones that don’t make the top 10 list of major concerns in voter surveys.

Across the Potomac River in swing state Virginia, almost all of the Obama attack ads against Republican rival Mitt Romney are about abortion and contraception, hoping they will be able to woo enough women to vote for Mr. Obama based on a single issue to put the state into his electoral column.

We’re in an election year when the president’s handling of the economy is the No. 1 complaint. High unemployment and the lack of good-paying jobs is No. 2, and unfathomable budget deficits and a nearly $16 trillion debt are Nos. 3 and 4. Mr. Obama believes he can win a second term on abortion, Mr. Romney’s tax returns and bashing his successful career as a venture capital investor. Apparently, he thinks the American people are fools who will fall for the old carnival shell game.

In “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” Hans Christian Andersen tells the tale of two tailors who weave a suit of clothes that is supposedly invisible to anyone who is either stupid or incompetent. When the emperor rides by, no one in the crowd dares to say anything, until a child cries out, “He isn’t wearing anything at all.”

Like the naked emperor, Mr. Obama appears oblivious to the dismal state of the economy. Or he thinks not enough of his voters will care that the economy is now in a sharp decline in the fourth year of his presidency if he can keep them distracted by other issues. He is also counting on the base of his party and its leadership not to utter a word about the 23 million Americans who can’t find good-paying, full-time jobs. So far, the Obama administration has done a good job of gagging Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill. They’re counting on the national news media to focus their fire power on the Romney-Ryan ticket, while burying the economic news stories — as the networks have been doing for the past four years. They did it again Wednesday by ignoring the Commerce Department’s report that the economy was barely growing at 1.7 percent and, economists say, will remain below 2 percent for the rest of this year.

When have I ever written that I am "happy" with the rate of recovery? I haven't. What I wrote is that the economy is slowly recovering and that jobs have been added each month for the past 31 months straight.

It took almost 15 years for this nation to recover from the Great Depression, and it will take more than four years to recover from this, the second worst recession since then.

Unemployment peaked at 10.2% in October, 2009. The 8.3% figure today most certainly is an improvement.

Economic growth during the last two quarters of 2008 and the first two quarters of 2009 were negative in nature, peaking at -8.2% during the fourth quarter of 2008. Beginning in the third quarter of 2009 until the present day, the economy has grown consistently above the zero line, between a half-percent to 4.75% per quarter, which is weak but definitely an improvement.

"50 million on food stamps is a sign of "economic freedom" according to Queen bitch Pillosi."

I am no fan of Nancy Pelosi, nor am I responsible for her poor assessments or choice of words.

"So it's really not that bad at all! (according to alpo)."

Again, I have never stated that the conomy of this nation "is not bad at all." I have stated that in the Chattanooga area, it has definitely been worse, and that we are doing better.

It's not Obama's fault you see. It's that damn Bush!"**

I have categorically stated many times that no President, even GWB, is responsible, nor can they wave magic wands to magically create jobs in this nation, nor can they make people go out and spend money.

"Bush's $4 trillion deficit in eight years was the problem! Obama's $5 trillion in four years had nothing to do with it."

Under both administrations, they have had most of the same EXACT people in Congress, who voted to spend that money. There are many people to blame, not just one President or the other.

"Alpo claims to be in business for himself."

Yes I do, and yes I am.

"Remember alpo, you didn't build that, so you need to pony up and give it to the government before your liberal guilt overcomes you."

Unlike yourself and all the other Obama bashers who just live to interpret and take out of context, the President's words from time to time, I am in full appreciation of all my customers, my employees, the construction workers who built the roads and the very building that I purchased and now own that contains my business, and the taxpayers, former and present, who years ago paid for the paving of all the road that leads to my place of business.

There are many people, some who are dead and buried, who deserve credit for assisting me in the building of my fairly successful business that I enjoy today. I most certainly did not get here on my own.

"It's not Obama's fault you see. It's that damn Bush!"
