The Apocalypse is a revelation in Fort Oglethorpe

Sunday, January 1, 1905

For whatever reason, Greek cuisine doesn't immediately pop into my head when it comes time to pick a place to eat. But just about every time it does, I have a good to great meal and make a mental note to choose it more often.

That's why I was keen to head down to Fort Oglethorpe to try the curiously named The Apocalypse. As I figured, the word has more than one meaning, and it's not just about the end times. It's an old Greek word referring to a revelation of something hidden.

The apocalypse for me was that there is a pretty good Greek/Italian restaurant in Fort Oglethorpe across from the Walmart shopping center on Battlefield Parkway.

THE MENU

IF YOU GOWhere: The Apocalypse, 107 Crye-Leike Drive, Fort Oglethorpe.Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-midnight Saturday, noon-9 p.m. Sunday.Price range: $5 for 6-inch cheese pizza to $20 for a 16-inch four-topping pie.Phone: 706-820-6137.

Greek and Italian dishes are offered on the fairly extensive menu. Pizzas, salads, calzones, wraps and plates are all available.

I chose the Gyro Plate, primarily because it seems like a signature item and therefore a good place to get a sense of what the restaurant does. It was a fairly simple dish, and that is part of the beauty of it. It was tastefully plated on a triangular dish, which was a bit of a pleasant surprise.

It came with Greek potatoes -- wonderfully seasoned with a little garlic, sea salt, oregano and olive oil before being oven roasted -- and a simple bed of lettuce, onions, tomatoes and a stick of feta cheese.

The real star, of course, was the roasted lamb served in chunks with a piece of soft pita bread and a cucumber-based tzatziki sauce. It's a fairly straightforward, time-tested combination, and it was pretty darn good. The lamb was tender and beautifully seasoned. Everything on the plate just worked well together.

You also can order several pasta dishes, including seafood, veggie, fettuccine Alfredo or chicken Alfredo. Several spaghetti and manicotti dishes are on the menu as well.

THE SERVICE

I arrived around 1 p.m. and was greeted immediately. My drink order was taken and delivered quickly. It also was refilled without me having to ask. The food was delivered promptly, and my plate was cleared almost immediately when I was done.

THE SPACE

It's pretty typical strip-mall decor, though a little nicer than some, with clean tile floors and tasteful prints on the walls. The handcrafted booths are not the most comfortable I've ever sat in, but the place is warm, friendly and, as I mentioned, clean.

THE VERDICT

I definitely would like to eat at The Apocalypse again. Next time, I'd like to try the pizza and the Greek salad.

My Gyro Plate was a tasty meal that left me wondering why I don't eat Greek food more often.
