Calhoun's Frix Academic All-America for UGA

Senior snapper Ty Frix from Calhoun, Ga., has joined junior quarterback Aaron Murray as an Academic All-American from the Georgia football team. Both made the second team of the Capital One-sponsored honors voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Both earned their undergraduate degrees last May. Frix's major was biological engineering, and he now is working on an M.B.A. and plans to begin medical school next fall.

Basketball

• Will Barnes made four 3-pointers and 10 of 13 free throws in scoring 36 points as the Lee University men's basketball team improved to 11-0 for the season with an 89-68 home win Thursday night against Oakwood University. The Flames, ranked third in NAIA Division I, also got 15, 14 and 13 points from Chase Dunn, Steve Bennett and Duran Blue, while Chad Lee had 11 rebounds with Bennett's seven and Blue had five assists. Ronald Baltimore led Oakwood (2-9) with 24 points, and Ronnie Clark had eight assists with 10 points.

• Tennessee Temple University swept a basketball doubleheader Thursday evening at Truett-McConnell in Cleveland, Ga. The Lady Crusaders (3-6) won 71-59 as Jessica Salera and Amanda Rector scored 18 and 16 points, Salera with 10 rebounds. TaQuasha O'Neal tallied 11 points and Alexis McGhee added 10 points and seven rebounds. Kelsey Montgomery scored 23 points for Truett-McConnell, while Alyssa Lawson added 11. The Temple men improved to 6-4 with Hampton Mack and P.J. Whittaker each scoring 14 points and Weedlens Beauvil adding 11. Brandon Joiner scored 22 and grabbed eight rebounds for Truett-McConnell.

• Bryan College was the other area team in a recent weekend men's basketball tournament at Tennessee Wesleyan, and Wesleyan is returning the favor in games tonight and Saturday in the Bryan College Classic in Dayton. The host Lions will take on Selma after the Athens team faces Mount Vernon Nazarene at 6. Selma against TWC starts Saturday's games at 2.
