An 89-year-old woman and her grandson had to evacuate their Red Bank house tonight when a fire started in the kitchen and quickly spread, according to spokeswoman Amy Maxwell.

The fire started around 6:35 p.m.and completely destroyed Hazel Thompson's home at 248 Peace St., Maxwell said. Thompson's grandson told firefighters he was boiling water on the stove, walked away for a minute, heard a popping sound and returned to find the stove completely engulfed in flames.

Thompson owns the house and her grandson was staying with her, Maxwell said. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Maxwell said.

The Red Bank Fire Department, Walden's Ridge Emergency Services, Soddy-Daisy Fire Department and Dallas Bay Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the blaze.
